Thanks, John Boy. “Roundtable”was floating in the back of my brain but didn’t’t make it to the front.

The giveaway on the FJ answer was the word “circle” in the clue. Dorothy Parker is best known as a member of the Algonquin Circle.

Spoiler alert: Nice to see the state of my birth being recognized for something other than Snookie, the Real Housewives or Tony Soprano.

Re: Reference books

I downloaded two free apps for my iphone, one on state facts and one on presidents, which I reviewed regularly on my lunch hour. Of course, the game before mine had a state capitals category.

On FJ, thought Cuba, came up with Hong Kong but somehow wasn't sure it's the name of the actual island and then had a doh moment for Manhattan. Didn't think DJ was all that hard.

Re: If you folks wouldn't mind, I'd love some advice

I think that the show's suggestions about attire are supposed to dissuade anyone from showing up in t-shirts with political, vulgar or obscene messages.

It is by me, but I still fell into the Pretoria trap and went with Mandela. SkoolRN, when I saw you posted something I thought you might also be wondering what kind of seat belt protects the thyroid. :o FWIW, I noticed "Thier," and I too said "Mandela" on the Final. I did do an involuntary choke on...

I remember Maggie also saying that we couldn't post that we'd been selected on any social media, not just the boards.

Re: Reference books

So now that I have an audition in 19 days, I need to really cram in a couple of areas where I have no knowledge at all: poetry and royalty. And suggestions on good guides to at least get me the basics? Other than the pavlovs, of course. "Stuff You Missed In History Class" has a good catalog of arti...

Re: When do I get my picture with Alex?

I know this has been discussed before, but I couldn't find it so maybe it was on the old board. I was under the impression that photos with Alex are sent around your airdate, but my show aired more than a month ago and still nothing... Is this normal, or is it time for me to shoot off an email to M...

Re: Monday, February 27, 2012 Game Recap & Discussion (SPOILERS)

Sweet merciful crap, that was an easy board. If I run a literary category, THE BOARD IS TOO FREAKING EASY. Not the best written though. I couldn't make heads or tails of $400 or $1200 in Social Studies, and that "skimpy" clue in Small Talk was just stupid. Who cares that one gossip rag used a word ...

I did visit the memorial and I still said the Vietnam wall.

Re: 3 Utterly Random Questions

Re #1. A staff member also walks behind the podium and writes down each person's wager on a very high-tech pad of paper on a clipboard. I assumed that was in case of a malfunction of the electronics. If it's being done as a backup in case of an electronic malfunction, wouldn't they want to use an e...

Re: 3 Utterly Random Questions

1) It's a different screen. Sort of. It's the same physical screen, but once you enter your wager, and 'lock it in' - confirming your wager - that's done. You don't see it anymore on your screen, either. You couldn't change it even if you wanted to. 2) Yes. From the point of view of the contestants...

Re: If you folks wouldn't mind, I'd love some advice

Relax, have fun, and remember that you have nothing to lose. That said, a few people at my audition talked about health and money problems in their interviews. You could feel the air leaving the room. Keep it all positive and upbeat. Break a leg!

Re: Friday, February 17, 2012 Game Recap & Discussion (SPOILERS)

The Addams Family began as cartoons? I did not know this. Major, major, MAJOR adaptation displacement there. How the hell she did not get pumice? That was one of the four I actually got right in that round. My mojo was really thrown off by the first four categories being way out of my league, then ...

Re: Friday, February 10, 2012 Game Recap & Discussion (SPOILERS)

FYI, very few people visit the daily thread before they've watched the episode, so you're not going to get many takers on questions like that. I'm not surprised that FJ proved difficult for our contestants, but for none of them to even think Biblical? Oof. I guess most of them didn't know that Hagi...
