Re: Tuesday, January 21, 2020 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

remember being a school kid and finding a crayon in my Crayola box called "burnt umber" You were probably thinking of "Raw umber". That was one of the eight colors they retired in 1990. Even into the late 90s, I would still occasionally find a Crayola box that had "new color" on one of the eight re...

... And Devon is an English name; despite England's far-reaching colonial history, the name is also a limiting factor. In my case, I first thought of Canada due to its many large islands, but then the name Devon threw me over to the UK. And my horse-racing knowledge was the reason. I remembered the...

Fogey is spelled wrong by the writers. Merriam-Webster approves of the "fogy" spelling. (In fact, they say "fogey" is a less common variant.) So does the Scrabble dictionary, and same for all the other online dictionaries I looked at. Still doesn't look right to me, but I've used that word many tim...

Re: Reretaken Down

Yeah, that was an Gulf War thing, wasn't it? The change to 11:35 came in September 1991 (well after the Gulf War ended), and was done solely so that affiliates could sell more ad time in their 11:00 news. If I recall correctly, "The Tonight Show" did get pushed back 10-15 minutes during the Gulf Wa...

"Heart Of Darkness" cost me a perfect FJ! week. I know absolutely zero about the book, not publish date, nor whether it had a riverboat in it. Nada. I hit on Mark Twain in my head, but that line didn't sound anything like Twain would do... African Queen, that's a boat on a river... Nahh.. Time's up.

I wonder if the winner of this TD will get a digital file containing Marcel Marceau's version of 4'33"?

I'm one of the 4'33" sheep; took that because I didn't think many would be confident in naming the actual number.

There were three of the four that surprised me as being considered "new to the OED". It seems that the OED, the world's most permissive dictionary, enters a word as soon as it's been used by.... um, maybe five people. I guess not in these cases... I've known the word "rooked" and that usage for 50-6...

I spent a few seconds working on "City of Light", getting nowhere... Then turned to 1901. Couldn't pull anything significant, but 1906 = SF Quake for this Californian, so that never entered my mind. Just $2000. Would have nailed the Deseret clue if I'd remembered the category, but I kneejerked "Brigham Young". That prevented a category sweep. :( I *knew* I had heard that term "Kintyre", but couldn't pair it up with anything. I know what a slip is, but have only heard the term said by itself, no...

It's true. My entry was simply 'Carpenters' as well.
