Re: LL82: LearnedLeague

I appreciate all the replies addressing my confusion :? over the apparent ease of the Bechdel question. ;) I put continuo for the basso question, but still managed to win. I said "continuo" too, which I didn't think was the answer being sought, but it's actually not that different, perhaps not as sp...

Re: LL82: LearnedLeague

I thought yesterday's set (MD 19) was brutal. I only got two right (Stallone/Rocky and Singapore). I've heard of the Bechdel test, but couldn't come up with the name. Agreed. I felt bad about getting only 3 right (narrowly missed the Taco Bell one) but then saw that Reddpen, my opponent for the day...

You can definitely tell who is either a) British, or b) watches British quiz shows. The "Carry On" films are perennial quiz fodder over there.
... or c) has actually seen a couple of the films over the years. It was hard not to notice eventually that there were many in this series, but 31? Wow!

Re: LL82: LearnedLeague

Interested in what people's thought process on the San Antonio one was. Asked for a city with an "eventful history concerning military compounds" I came up with San Antonio, Charleston (Fort Sumter) and Honolulu (Pearl Harbor) and didn't really know how to narrow it down from there. I went with Cha...

Re: LL82: LearnedLeague

Only 35% recognize the Mercury Seven? I'm flabbergasted. Same here. And the weirder thing is that it had the lowest Avg D (1.0), which generally means that it was considered the easiest question. I assigned my opponent with an 88% get rate in American History a no-brainer "0", and she missed it. Di...

Should’ve sheeped for everything.

The los del rio thing was a typo, so I just have to lol at that.
Clearly a simple typo. I think it should be accepted.

Re: LL82: LearnedLeague

Given all the clues in the question about Van Doren, how did that only play 14%? I completely whiffed. It certainly made sense in retrospect, but my brain just didn't take me there. Same here. The 1991 publication date certainly didn't point me to Senate testimony from 1959 and I didn't recall from...

Re: TD 429 - All Music (Second Quarter Standings Revealed)

I've been around TD's long enough to not get too annoyed when what I think is a really good answer turns out to be a (mega-)sheep. But "Marty Robbins".... really? Of course that was still better than the other "really good answer" I considered: Lee Hazlewood and Nancy Sinatra, who had a pretty big c...

Re: Buzzer Timing - Anticipate or Wait?

For my two games I was lights only both times. I was comfortable with speed reading the clue and concentrating on the edge of the board for the lights without having to follow along with Alex reading the clue. Prior to Alex completing the clue I was able to take in the ending of the clue and be rea...

Re: LL81: LearnedLeague

On the Mythology one, I rejected sorority and tried to make Pleiades work with 9 instead of seven sisters. Of course there are only 6 stars in the Pleiades noticeably brighter than the others. And those 6 stars form the symbol for what auto manufacturer? Subaru, which IIRC means Pleiades in Japanes...

... And that immensely satisfying THWOK of a free game won. You could feel it through your fingertips on the flipper buttons. To a 12 year old boy, nothing compared to that sound and feel. I commented earlier on the LL board about having visual memories of playing pinball in the 1960s during summer...

Re: LL81: LearnedLeague

For me, poutine fell into the category of "what else could it be?" I first saw it on a menu about 20 years ago in a Toronto bar. By then, the Quebecois comfort food had gained a following in English Canada. I'm not competing this season, only following, but I also figured WECIB, given the Québec re...
