Re: Learned League 84

Meanwhile...I am really looking forward to the 1970s Music mini-league. Maybe because I grew up in that decade, I thought the 1970s had the best music ever made. Hopefully, the questions for that mini-league will align with my knowledge base. Looks like this could be a brutal ML; 33% average get ra...

LotF while I was thinking TZ. https://i.ibb.co/2sxVck8/burgess.jpg I thought of that episode too.... and I just happened to watch it two nights ago on Hulu. ETA: OK, Twilight Zone fans... Burgess Meredith is tied among actors for the most starring roles in original TZ episodes, with 4. (Other actor...

So I just realized, because of my eyeball lasering, I have now apocalypse proofed my vision. No emulating Piggy for me when society goes all Lord of the Flies now. Re: Learned League 84

I had one of my more disappointing misses yesterday on the Stone's song. The clue included this phrase: exactly one has a title which is, in its one-word entirety, a common female first name . I'm pretty sure I mulled over "Angie", but decided on "Gloria" ("G-L-O-R-I-A) because the rule with Thorst...

Re: Learned League 84

Thanks to the Current Events thread, I had Ghosn and Nissan on a flashcard. Unfortunately for me, I didn't bother to also put Renault, so I missed that. It would have taken one second to add that to the card, too. Bah. Yeah, I associated him with Nissan. Had no idea before yesterday that he was act...

Thanks for hosting! Did you mean to include letters in your bulleted lists, and are the missing letters required on the answer form? Thank you for playing! The bullets are just to keep the list organized, no letters are required this time. It's not exactly clear from the icons, but to create a bull...

Re: Learned League 84

I had my third straight tie yesterday, this one 7(4)-7(5). I thought that Sancho Panza was the name of the donkey from Don Quixote  I also considered Run D.M.C., but I remembered hearing the news story back when the one guy from the group died and thought for sure that I would at least recogn...

Re: Learned League 84

I was very lucky that Thorsten accepted "news reels" instead of film. I knew that Pathe was a major newsreel producer but after I sent in my answers I kicked myself for not reading the question accurately (it was looking for something more broad and general). "News reels" was surely enough to ident...

Re: Learned League 84

So, why do 57% of the people know about Robert Johnson and his tomato? I didn't, but I knew the tomato was considered (either legitimately or not) poisonous for longer than should have been logical. This. I think the tomato is in the nightshade family, many of which ARE poisonous. Not that it matte...

The Chesebrough Manufacturing Company, which became Chesebrough-Ponds and was ultimately acquired by Unilever in 1987, was best known for a product discovered by its co-founder and company namesake in Titusville, Pennsylvania, and first sold in 1870. From the beginning, this product was (and is sti...

More of this. Putting together and running a quiz takes time and effort. I can unequivocally state from having done this several times that showing appreciation is very much appreciated and provides an incentive to do it again.

Re: LL83: Learned League

I saw "Liliom" and immediately knew the answer was going to be Carousel , having recently watched the 1930 filmed version of Liliom out of curiosity. Aside from the non-musical aspect, this version and others so-named are much closer to the original play. Anyway -- and I say this as someone who has ...

I just wasn't sure if it's as good as whatever other candidates there are.
Generally speaking, anything we come up with is significantly better than what actually gets nominated.

Another tough day yesterday, with Camp David Accords my only get. And I said Marie Callender for Maria Callas
You may not take any solace in this, but I'd vote for that for the season's Very Best Wrong Answer.

Outlier? In the 42 matches from the beginning of LL82 through LL83/MD17, I had a grand total of 3 MCW's. Yesterday, in LL83/MD18 alone, I had 3 MCW's. Kosman koin said "no" when I chose between "Norwegian Wood" and "Nowhere Man." C'mon.... Nowhere Man sounded like a much better title for a novel, t...

Re: LL83: Learned League

From anyone who got the W. C. Fields question right, I'm interested in hearing what specifically tipped people off -- was it one of the character names in particular? I'm hardly a WC Fields fan and have not seen that many of his works, but The Bank Dick is actually quite good. Mahatma Kane Jeeves a...
