Re: LL81: LearnedLeague

On the Mythology one, I rejected sorority and tried to make Pleiades work with 9 instead of seven sisters. Of course there are only 6 stars in the Pleiades noticeably brighter than the others. And those 6 stars form the symbol for what auto manufacturer? Subaru, which IIRC means Pleiades in Japanes...

... And that immensely satisfying THWOK of a free game won. You could feel it through your fingertips on the flipper buttons. To a 12 year old boy, nothing compared to that sound and feel. I commented earlier on the LL board about having visual memories of playing pinball in the 1960s during summer...

Re: Your PM notifications are in the SPAM folder!

Some of us were talking a while ago about how we stopped getting email notifications when we have a new PM on JBoard. Well, I just found those notifications in Gmail's SPAM folder. For anyone interested, here are some instructions on how to tell Gmail to knock it off: https://www.jotform.com/help/4...

Re: LL81: LearnedLeague

For me, poutine fell into the category of "what else could it be?" I first saw it on a menu about 20 years ago in a Toronto bar. By then, the Quebecois comfort food had gained a following in English Canada. I'm not competing this season, only following, but I also figured WECIB, given the Québec re...

So, just so I'm clear, Michelangelo went unused, but 4 people went with AJ Pollock!? I don't know why this game still surprises me, my head is still swimming from that nonsensical Merlin Olsen sheep. the 4 who went with aj pollock probably didn't think jeopardy people knew who he was Baseball and t...

Yes, Maria Ouspenskaya was a Russian-born dance and acting teacher, and also a character actress, often playing an older "Madame" somebody in classic films, but she is arguably best remembered as the old gypsy woman Maleva in The Wolf Man and in the sequel Frankenstein Meets the Wolf Man . http://pe...

Re: LL80: LearnedLeague

I thought I had a pretty good shot at a rare (for me) six pack, but I stupidly wrote cigna instead of cignus and changed my mind for no good reason from Warhol, who I thought of immediately and confidently, to John Cage, and my six pack became a 4 (4) 5 (3) loss. There's a lesson there, third or fo...

I went with Mercator because, who else could it be? But then I started thinking about the fact that there are a ton of other map styles, but stuck with it anyway. XKCD has two great comics on the Mercator projection, the second of which got me wavering on Mercator. Here they are: ( https://xkcd.com...

Yesterday was one of those days where my mind went from Starz to the Sci-Fi or History Channel and then landed on Starz. Those little mistakes add up! 7(4)-7(5) tie might have helped if you thought about Starz being a pay-channel instead of regular cable. Also, from what little I know of what's on ...

Re: LL80: LearnedLeague

It took me a while to realize the answer for the geography question didn't necessarily need to be a country on the Arabian Peninsula. Once I got past that mental block, Somalia seemed obvious (and it just came up in Jeopardy! the day before). There are two geography-related facts that I often have ...
