Alas, the indicators that this is the end for the show are becoming more evident.
Please tell - I haven't been able to watch recently. Why do you think it is the end?

Our doorbell camera caught a meteor last night that tracked off the coast of New Jersey:

That's awesome! Now I want one of those cameras - but for astronomy, not the doorbell.

Re: Wednesday, April 17, 2019 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

I hope they do another UToC-type tournament again. It would be great to watch James go against the likes of Ken Jennings, Brad Rutter, and Roger Craig. Whenever his run ends, that is. Probably in 2025 or so. Fortunately for us Sony is probably wellll ahead of us in contriving an opportunity to brin...

Big area in Russia
10,000 sq. mi. ==/== "big area" (The UP in MI is 16,000+ sq. mi.)
It is if you have zero clue how big 10,000 square miles is. That could be the size of Mars, Minnesota, Monaco, or Merdian Mall.
100 miles*100 miles =10,000 square miles.

Re: Wednesday, April 17, 2019 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

Amazing. It doesn't even seem like the same game. Like the doped up Lance Armstrong vs the tour de France 20 years ago. Lkke Usain Bolt vs a high school sprinter. Like Ken Jennings in dominance. So he's 9 of 10 in finals. What records are we looking for in final J? What is the record for most correc...

Re: So...what have we learned so far from James Holzhauer?

Buzzing speed matters. In every game so far, there’s one player who barely buzzes in, and I doubt it’s because they don’t know the answers. Of course buzzing speed matters greatly, but I think James also knows a bit more of the material than the average contestant. This reminds me of triviawayne's ...

Re: Adult Online Test: Apr 9, 10, 11

Passed the test every time since the online version began - with a break for the 1~2 years where Canadians were discouraged from entering. My only audition in that span was in 2008. My wife cmp146 on this board got 3 auditions starting at the same time, and got on the show in 2015 from her last one....

Somehow he seemed to put the buzzer down for extended stretches, and still had almost 30k Coryat and the second highest score alltime. Amazing.

Re: Online Test Recap & Discussion (Central), April 10, 2019

I got 41. Thoughts on if "Potential Energy" might have been accepted for Entropy? I know Entropy is more correct. Potential energy is wrong. The wording was: "Its the measure of energy unavailable for useful work in a system: as it increases the universe is said to be running down" The second half ...

Re: The connection between a quiz bowl background and J! success

The transition happened earlier than this: in 1990 - 1996 I played 'College Bowl' questions like the simple ones you listed, but by the end of that time few others did. NAQT and ACF and community-written questions were taking over.

Re: 2019 Current Events Study Guide

The Event Horizon Telescope - actually a virtual telescope consisting of 8 radio telescopes across the globe - released the first image where they imaged a black hole. They saw the "shadow" of a supermassive black hole, with a mass of billions of suns, at the centre of galaxy M87. The angular resolu...

Re: The connection between a quiz bowl background and J! success

There is a strong correlation. But, the games are different. Quiz Bowl rewards deeper knowledge than Jeopardy does, but typically has a narrower subject matter - more academic or more "trashy", for the pop culture. There are few questions with the hints and wordplay that J has. QB also emphasizes sp...

Don't do the test at 1.5 speed on YouTube to practice.

41 right, but missed 4 of the last 7 as it all got too much for me. I'll slow it down for realsies tomorrow.

That was awesome. Way to go James!

Friendly boards, weaker opponents, hit the daily doubles, supreme confidence, amazing buzzer speed, deep knowledge. It all came together today. That was fun to watch!
