Re: Summer Hiatus Challenge 2018--Medal ceremony

Congrats to Schliemann and the other TOCers - very impressive all round! Thanks to rjaguar3 and the team - another stellar run of questions.

The SHC is part of my anti-hubris regimen: ten questions a day to combat your ego! Congrats to those who excel - you give me a goal to shoot for.

Re: LearnedLeague 78 - Official Thread

Brutal day yesterday. I was lucky to get 4 - I said "Milne" for the two-movie Christopher Robin question. I was thinking of A.A. - not his son, so another point proving you should just give the last name if permitted. It wasn't enough though, as my opponent got 5 and correctly knew I would miss the ...

Great job Susannah! I might have tried the 250k question:

"iso" means same "morph" means shape? That seems pretty close to right. Sad trombone.
Does anyone have a link to today's "B" game? acthomas - great start on yesterday's show! I want to see the end.

Cheap trivia resources - support charity

I'm a big fan of the "humble bundle", which started out selling independent video games cheaply with the proceeds going to charity. I sometimes buy bundles of e-books from them - where the money can be directed to different charities. This week's bundle is titled "Trivia Champion": https://www.humbl...

Re: Jeopardy! All Stars First Pick Poll

Lots of great players here: Alex, Matt and Ben all could be my first pick... but the decades tournament wasn't that long ago. Gotta go with Roger.

Re: LearnedLeague 78 - Official Thread

Midseason Classic: I got 11 right: somehow I read the "Most german speakers in a city outside Germany" to mean "outside of Europe" and I was completely stumped, but went with a lame guess of Buenos Aires. Why I moneyed it is another question with no good answer. Even if I had all 12 right, I wouldn'...

Re: Jeopardy All-Star Games

If viewership goes up with better players ... everyone loves watching Maseratis. These are likely bad assumptions, and we've had this conversation on this board and its predecessors too many times to count, but the summary goes something like this: Jeopardy! is a quiz show, implying not just quiz b...

Re: Jeopardy All-Star Games

It strikes me as odd that the jeopardy powers that be keep bringing in the same quality of contestants they always have: a couple of really good quizzers per week (or so), and 8 or so people with more average skills. But with the TOC and this tournament they hype the top players. If viewership goes ...

Re: Jeopardy All-Star Games

Yeah, it does sound fun. We'll have to try to get some of these contestants back here to do some trash talking and build a team of fans!

So: Who would you draft first given first pick?

Unlike, say, quiz bowl, you don't need to balance strengths, so you go on straight J prowess.

Re: LearnedLeague 78 - Official Thread

I had to go back in to work Tuesday evening and made the mistake of having a cup of tea on the way in. I worked for a few hours, came home just before midnight, had a snack and... couldn't sleep for hours. I tossed and turned, surfed the web on my phone, tried all I could do to sleep, but I was as a...

Congratulations on the beer, boson! I've lost to boardies on consecutive days now, thanks to jfrumkin, too.
Thanks! A lucky one - I knew nothing at first glance, and violin was a guess.

Hope your season turns around soon - you aren't in your customary spot challenging for the lead!

Re: Summer Hiatus Challenge 2018--Round 5 Instant Replay (SPOILERS)

Question: Why can we not post rounds 5 and 6 simultaneously? Some of us don't really check this site over the weekends... It isn't 'we' who post round 5 and 6 but one person. rjaguar3 is running this quiz for 6 weeks straight, providing well-edited, challenging questions 6 days a week AND doing the...
