Re: Online Test Recap & Discussion (Central), April 10, 2019

28: "It's the measure of energy unavailable for useful work in a system; as it increases, the universe is said to be running down" I'm sure the intended response is "entropy." I'm not sure entropy is technically correct though. The wording here fooled me into thinking they wanted something that coul...

Re: FJs for the 2/18/19 week

I'm a bit surprised Emma Goldman is so unfamiliar to most. Though I've never sought out a biography of her, she seems to constantly pop up in the history, historical fiction, and politcs books I read. If nothing else, I would have expected her to be well known through Maureen Stapleton's Oscar-winni...

Re: FJs for the 12/17/18 week

Two for five in FJs, which is my worst record in a long time. I saw Amadeus about 10 years ago but still didn't get Requiem . On Tuesday, I was another one fooled into thinking highway. I was torn between Skyline Drive and the Lincoln Highway. I probably would have gotten Wednesday's if I'd seen it ...

Re: Should the Teen Tournament Winner Get a TOC Invite?

I don't support an automatic entry into the ToC for the Teen champion, but I do think they should have some mechanism to advance. How about a special qualifying game to fill the 15th spot to be held on the Friday before the ToC starts. It might be Teen champ vs. Teacher champ vs. College champ. Or i...

Re: FJs for the 10/22/18 week

I guessed the Western White House for the presidential retreat, even though I knew it didn't seem to fit the "in a hint of the future" part of the clue. I never knew that Mar-a-Lago was a presidential retreat before Trump's time in office.

Re: FJs for the 10/8/18 week

I first wrote "Solomon" but had time to change it to the correct response.

I almost wrote "Herakles" (with a k) but then I remembered that the Jeopardy! writers almost always use the Latin form Hercules even in a Greek context.

Re: FJs for the 9/24/18 week

I had been reading about it the day before, so I answered Look Back in Anger. At the time, it seemed the logical thing to do. I never read Pygmalion, but I saw the 1938 film adaptation. I don't recall if that line was included.

Re: Tuesday, October 2, 2018 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

I got the right response to FJ because Affleck was the only actor I could think of who won for writing and producing. I just didn't think it could be right because his name isn't hyphenated. I have a pretty good vocabulary and try to keep up with slang and jargon, but I don't remember ever encounter...

Re: Online Test Recap & Discussion (Central), March 7, 2018

I got 42 on this one, not that it matters. I got 42 or 43 for real on Tuesday. I had one wild guess that turned out to be right (Pringles). I missed Gershwin. I typed Gershwin, erased it, typed Berlin, erased that, and was in the process of typing Gershwin again when time ran out.

Re: Online Test Recap & Discussion (Eastern), March 6, 2018

What's the verdict on 'ours' instead of 'our'? Doesn't technically match the clue as "a period of time" points to singular rather than plural but on the show they generally don't neg for a singular/plural disagreement unless the category is something like "4 letter words" or "ends with -ur", so you...

Re: Online Test Recap & Discussion (Eastern), March 6, 2018

was the answer to #3 synapse or neuron? I don't remember the exact wording so I'm not sure what the right answer is. I was going for "afferent neuron" but ran out of time and only got "afferent n". I think I got 43, which is the exact same score I usually get. I think I might have misspelled "The A...

X - I blanked on the last question, but I think the answer was "Kora" - I definitely didn't have time to type everything. A 4-letter word for stringed instrument that is also a fish when spelled backwards? . Pronounced one way, it's a stringed instrument; pronounced another it's a fish. https://www...

Re: Online Test Recap & Discussion (Pacific), April 16, 2015

I think this is the fifth time I've taken the online test and the fourth time I've scored exactly 43. As usual I totally blanked on a couple of easy ones and overthought a couple of others.

As goforthetie notes, Moldova was a correct response to the Danube question. Moldova controls less than a mile of the Danube and they have chosen to beautify the beautiful blue river with a gigantic oil depot. It's located in the damn-near-unpronouncable town of Dzhurdzhulesht.

Re: Online Test Recap & Discussion (Central), January 8, 2014

I think I got 43 this time vs. 45 last year and 43 the year before. Blanked on several that I should have known. Troposphere and Neptune hurt especially bad because meteorology and astronomy are supposed to be two of my stronger categories. For the Planck question I went with quantum but I have to w...

Re: Online Test Recap & Discussion (Eastern), January 8, 2013

It seemed pretty easy, as did last year's. I think I got 45 right tonight against 43 last time. I couldn't even think of the name of a single supermodel as a guess for #2. I hit myself over the head on #20 because the book was made into one of my favorite movies of all time, but I didn't even think ...

Re: Friday, October 19, 2012 Game Recap & Discussion (SPOILERS)

Although I wasn't aware of Ted Turner's fascination with Gone with the Wind , it was the first title that came to me because of the Turner-Atlanta conjunction. I should have turned my brain off right then. Unfortunately I convinced myself that April 14 was an important part of the clue, which I knew...

Re: Tuesday, March 20, 2012 Game Recap & Discussion (SPOILERS)

There was something in the clue about it being around $10K an ounce. Uranium is nowhere near that expensive. Natural uranium is nowhere near that expensive, but they specified bomb-grade material. The U-235 used to make bombs makes up less than 1% of natural uranium. The Jeopardy writers appeared t...

Re: Tuesday, March 20, 2012 Game Recap & Discussion (SPOILERS)

I only got 1 of 5 right of the triple rhyme time. Wordplay isn't my strength, espcially when you only get a few seconds to think, but I usually do okay on regular rhyme time categories. I probably could have gotten most or all of the the triples if given half a minute to think, but that's not how th...

Re: Online Test Discussion (Eastern), January 17, 2012

The test was easier than I expected. I think I got 43 right, plus or minus one, assuming they're reasonably liberal about spelling and capitalization.
