Re: Fun with ABC's "Celebrity Jeopardy!"

I wonder what kind of "celebrities" they're going to find who will cross a picket line. Writers, actors, and comedians are right out and I doubt most musicians, mainstream news presenters and political pundits would be tempted. What's left? Who among us is eager to watch the matchup of Hon...

Re: FJs for the 7/17/23 week

On Friday I wrote down MDCLXVI before crossing it out and replacing it with 1666. However, I'm absolutely sure I could have solved it all in my head if that were necessary.

"Nude Descending a Staircase" on Wednesday, "Kubla Khan" on Thursday.

Re: Thursday, July 20, 2023 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

Count me as another who guessed "Kubla Khan" even though I wasn't sure whether it fit the "epic" part of the clue (on further investigation, I find it doesn't). I thought of Don Juan about a second before time ran out but I probably wouldn't have changed my answer even if I'd had...

Re: FJs for the 7/10/23 week

I missed two. For the Colorado city, I matched Justin's response of "What is Telluride?" I think I made a similar mistake a few years ago when the correct response was "What is Golden?" I should have learned my lesson then. There are a lot of Colorado towns and cities named for o...

Re: Friday, July 14, 2023 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

I guessed right on FJ but I didn't have much confidence. I also thought of Raymond Chandler, who set most of his novels in and around Los Angeles, not central California. He doesn't quite fit the time period, since he didn't start writing stories until 1933 and his first novel was published in 1939....

I was waiting for one of the contestants to say "Eat it, Jennings, for $200." Preferably with a Sean Connery accent. Sadly, it didn't happen.

Final Jeopardy was pretty easy but it's representative of a type of FJ clue that contains a date and a duration. In the file of Jeopardy material that I keep, I have a section on hints and tips. One section says "When the clue contains or implies a date and a duration of time before or after th...

For the thin transparent eye membrane, I responded "What is conjunctiva?" instead of "cornea" and initially marked my answer wrong. But now that I've looked it up, I wonder whether conjunctiva should be accepted. I'm no ophthalmologist, but from what I can tell, the conjunctiva i...

Looked for the box that said ... "answered mitochondrion for the singular 'this organelle'." I agree the clue seems to call for the singular form, which is why I didn't even try to say "mitochondria." I started to say "mitochondrium" (which probably would have been neg...

The clue about Marcus Tullius caused me no trouble. About the time of the American Revolution, Marcus Tullius Cicero was generally known in English under an anglicized version of his nomen (middle or clan name), "Tully". I remember reading a book about the inspirations of the American Revo...

I thought of both Ceres and Pluto before time ran out. I was 100% certain Pluto is considered a dwarf planet and not so sure about Ceres, so I guessed Pluto. I'm giving myself credit for it. Pluto is closer to the sun than Neptune for about 20 years out of every orbital period of about 248 years, mo...

The question I'm really left with after this game is: did anybody else notice the mispronunciation on DJ6, particularly in contrast to the interviews on May 18? I didn't get the chance to notice any mispronunciation because the affiliate had technical issues and stopped broadcasting audio for about...

I also thought of Khazad-dûm, but I would have said Moria because I knew that's what they were expecting. I would think that they would have to accept Khazad-dûm, since that was the real name of what the clue called "this place" (insofar as a fictional place can be said to have a real name...

Some really terrible writing in this one. As far as I know "tough ticket" is not at all a common phrase. Since it was a DD with no penalty for guessing, I would have said "What is ticket trap?" That actually returns slightly more Google results than "tough ticket," but ...

Invoking Bligh in a clue about Pitcairn Island is rather odd. Bligh never came anywhere near Pitcairn, as far as I know. It was Fletcher Christian and his fellow mutineers and several Tahitians who went to Pitcairn. Yes, that was shortly after their mutiny against Bligh, but still. I almost said &qu...

$12,800 in LT + DD + another $4000 in LT + FJ. I'm surprised Snellen chart polls as high as it does, now at 31%. At first I wanted to say Snell chart, but knew it was wrong because Snell's Law is something entirely different. Snellen came to me with a fraction of a second to spare. Snel alias Snell ...

I wrote down "What is Marx?" for the brothers, but with about a second remaining the correct response came to me. I didn't have enough time to change it. For Thursday, I had "Who is Timur the Lame?" He was born in the 14th century in Uzbekistan, which is pretty far from Kurdistan...

I've been to that bus terminal, once, for five minutes, 35 years ago. I remembered the name contained a word that had something to do with water, but I couldn't recall which word it was. I went through Atlantic, ferry, aqueduct, and Hudson, then got sidetracked with "the Hudson River Line"...

Re: Monday, March 20, 2023 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

FJ was a case of too much knowledge being dangerous. I initially wrote down "What is Mauritania?" because I knew there was never a Roman province named Morocco and knew there was a Roman province called Mauretania (note slight difference in spelling, with an E instead of an I). But as I th...
