Note to self: "Close Encounters of the Third Kind" is a 1970s alien film directed by Steven Spielberg. File this in your rolodex Rolodex™, even though it'll probably fall back out two days later.

most annoying thing on the site is when people use non-universal abbreviations...what exactly is GL and SW? George Lucas / Star Wars (another 1977 film) My first thought was Star Wars , but Watch the Skies felt more like an alien invasion than space travel to me, so I changed it to Close Encounters...

I got FJ, but possibly too late and I almost certainly wouldn't have gotten it while under pressure. I couldn't remember who Reagan ran against in 1984, but I knew that 1980 fit. Sen. Walter Mondale This got me wondering, who has been both a Senator and a Governor? Because just saying "Senator" doe...

Have the mods here ever heard of freedom of speech? https://imgs.xkcd.com/comics/free_speech.png Alt text: I can't remember where I heard this, but someone once said that defending a position by citing free speech is sort of the ultimate concession; you're saying that the most compelling thing you ...

Anybody know which double-letter capital was used for the J6 clue? I pre-called Tallahassee. Another possibility is Cheyenne. What other capitals qualify? We only saw 4 clues played in the category. Pierre (to answer the second question). Amerigo Vespucci. I started off on a very wrong track with M...

Where do the contestants read the FJ clue from? Across the studio. You see it when the camera zooms in at the start of the music. I believe it's the TV in the last photo here? Smithson seemed like a strange triple-stumper. Who else has an "Institution" named for them?
I bet if they asked for the Institution name, they'd be fighting over the buzzer. Or if it was higher up someone would take a chance with "Smithsewn" (vs "Smithsun"; wasn't it a bottom row clue?).

I had no clue on FJ. I figured that the best bet on a TOM was to look at Cerasus from the etymological angle, but I got nowhere. I guessed pomegranates. I figured Cerasus was the TOM, but it did nothing for me. I guessed pomegranates because they seem like something that would grow in Turkey. Ditto...

I wonder if they just got tired of all the jokes about the one-legged waitress named Eileen.
Turned out to be some New Coke gimmick anyway and it's back to IHOP.
