Re: Thursday, September 24, 2020 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

It's not uncommon to see clues valued at $2000 that have viewers scratching their heads at the board placement. Today it's the stone gorgon clue. It was a $1600, but the temple should have lead beat-'go' category and pushed everything above it down one. (The $2000 felt reasonable.) Shame tha...

Re: Learned League 86 - Aug/Sep 2020

MD9Q1: What is the term, which originated in a 1938 article in Variety magazine and is associated historically with disc jockeys, for a secret or indirect transfer of funds for a commercial favor (such as the promotion of a particular record)? Non-BWA: Playdough Actual BWA: none I like that one. MD...

Re: Learned League 86 - Aug/Sep 2020

Loved how that Hank Williams clue could work either as pop music, sports or current events (and yet still played low...)

And back up to The Show. Wasn't entirely mine to win, but I'll take it! (...for a season probably...is stressful up there with a TCA in the 90s...)

Re: Learned League 86 - Aug/Sep 2020

And final standings coming down to the last game... this is going to be a long day...
(If my napkin math is good, there are still eight viable for the last two promotion spots...)

Re: Tuesday, September 22, 2020 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

As far as the "India" response, I think 1833 is a reasonable attempt to pin the clue away from India. That's the year the US and Thailand established diplomatic relations - I don't know if 1833 has any significance in US/India relations. Plus, the book about India is about economics more than diplo...

Re: Monday, September 21, 2020 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

Was anyone else thrown for a loop on "It's where the sub-zero goes"? Yes. I had never heard of a sub-zero (or, Sub-Zero, as it is apparently a brand name) before. I thought maybe it was one of those deep-freezers, so I put it in the garage. Ideal range for a freezer is around 0 to 5F, so I don't kn...

Re: Learned League 86 - Aug/Sep 2020

I guessed Turkmenistan for the former Soviet republic. I also guessed Charles Manson for Ozzy Osbourne. Guessed Tajikistan for no real reason, not sure how one was supposed to get that one without simply knowing it. MCWA here of Moldova which...geographically, feels obvious, but it's always been Es...

FinCEN Files : https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-54226107 A leak of over 2,500 files, mostly reports sent from banks to US authorities of suspected criminal activity Not sure if any of the individual shoutouts are worthy of mention, but the collection itself falls in the same group as the Pentagon Paper...

Re: 2020 Current Events Study Guide

Drama was a little more varied...helped by Succession not having a Lead Actress up for nomination...

Succession took Series, Actor (Jeremy Strong) and Writing
Zendaya took Actress, Drama, for Euphoria

My son played baseball as a kid with a boy named Cain. Not sure why you would name your son after a person who murdered his brother.
Well, if he's an only child, no worries.

Re: Learned League 86 - Aug/Sep 2020

I'd never heard of Five Moons or the three women in that question, but I knew of only one set of famous Native American sisters, with or without a last name; luckily that set had a last name, and it was the correct answer. I'm not surprised to see the low get percentage. (I could name Maria but not...

Judges:. anti-Communism for McCarthyism? :?:
Negative. You'd be very hard pressed to say "[anti-Communism] both reached its peak & began its decline [in 1954]"
If anything, it's still going strong.

Re: Thursday, September 17, 2020 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

Likewise. This was especially galling as I could clearly recall the movie "Frida" from 15 years or so ago, which was all about their stormy love life, but blanked on the name for the crucial 30 seconds. It's excellent, btw, highly recommended, not for the kiddies. Everything I know about Diego Rive...

Re: 2020 Current Events Discussion Thread

A minor point that I think is neat but probably doesn't rise to the level of the other thread: Atticus Ross and Trent Reznor won an Emmy this year for their score for HBO's Watchmen . This puts both of them at 3/4 of an EGOT, each being a Tony award away from completing the four-award set. Dare we ...
