Re: Online Test Recap & Discussion (College), October 1, 2019

40/50 off the board. Now if I were only 20 years old again. (but then, getting on J! would not be my greatest reason to rejoice)

Thanks sherder!

Re: Thursday, October 3, 2019 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

Man, this was sad. My LT on PGA championship, (Edison's) hearing, lanai, pulsar, rifling, and Yankees was enough to go into FJ in a tie with Kevin from the imaginary 4th podium. That plus my all-in instaget FJ won the game. And all those clues left unrevealed? UGH. I knew about Edison's hearing diff...

Re: Wednesday, October 2, 2019 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

That's the kind of game I love to see: three evenly matched, good quality players, all with a realistic chance going into the final. The kind of game I hate to see anyone lose. And capped off by three absolutely spot-on correct FJ wagers. Well done, all. The J round was something of a hot mess, as ...

Re: Wednesday, October 2, 2019 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

Had a rough go of it in J! round. Clammed/blanked on $400-$800 in Untrue Detective, got only Colgate by the break. Ended up 0/5 in TV or Not TV, Untrue Detective, and Not-So-Good Doctor. For some reason, I kept blanking. Nancy Drew, Levi Strauss, suave, and Jim Beam were all right on the tip of my ...

Re: Tuesday, October 1, 2019 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

Got the FJ on the strength of two pieces of guesswork: (1) what volcano could they be talking about, and (2) name a mountain range in that part of the country. I was about 80-90% sure for each half of it, which was good enough for me. Same here. Almost said Sierra Nevada, but fortunately re-thought...

Re: FJs for the 9/23/19 week

Re Thursday's clue: I hate when they ask you to know the year some building opened, or a movie debuted, etc. From the date involved, I thought there were any number of excellent guesses, including World Trade Towers and CNN tower (which was my guess). And God knows how many structures have been labe...

Re: Monday, September 30, 2019 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

Good thing for me I'm a huge fan of the Summer Olympics. If this had been about the Winter games, well, "stand and stare" comes to mind. I very quickly pieced together England 1948 + "regular trip" (meaning the symbolic object moves around) + Finland 1952 leads nicely to London, then Helsinki. I was...

Re: Wednesday, September 25, 2019 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

No, but my problem was 'NATIONAL' - I convinced myself that Hawaii was not yet part of USA in 1866! Did you just get confused on this one? The word "national" does not appear in the clue or the category name (which was NATURAL Geographic Features). Getting sidetracked on whether Hawaii was/was not ...

Re: Monday, September 23, 2019 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

I had no idea what to even guess for FJ, so just picked a random show from that time period, and was wrong. This highlighted a clear gap in my knowledge... Don't be hard on yourself. This is hardly an area of knowledge most would be expected to have, even aspiring J! contestants. Pretty darned obsc...

:( :(

Not 10-for-10 to start the season, but 8-for-10 is quite acceptable.

Re: Friday, September 20, 2019 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

Also, yesterday on the Oceans category, I WAGged on five clues and was wrong all five times. THAT is why I don't guess. We're not talking about ringing in and guessing blindly on regular clues. We're talking about FJ, where not writing any response guarantees that you'll get it wrong. But there hav...

Re: Thursday, September 19, 2019 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

What was the TOM for Chicago on Hull House for $200? New York seemed like a far more cromulent guess on a big city known for immigrants. No TOM, at least not in my case. I simply accessed my personal memory banks and recalled reading of Jane Addams and Hull House in Chicago in junior high history c...

Re: Wednesday, September 18, 2019 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

FWIW John Huston's screenplay refers to "the fat man" 27 times. The original novel , 80 times. My recollection (which of course is spot-on almost always  ) was that Spade referred to Gutman in the movie any number of times as "Fat Man." Interestingly my first thought for this FJ was the "blac...

Re: Tuesday, September 17, 2019 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

Tricky one. Was tempted to say "La Marsellaise" but thought that would be too easy. Took a closer look and just so happened to recognize the Routhier name. I thought it would be too easy as well. And still took the negbait like a starving mackerel. Jeesh. Meanwhile, it certainly didn't take long in...

Re: Alex Trebek Announces Diagnosis of Pancreatic Cancer

I am now five weeks into taking chemo infusions for pancreatic cancer, and I can offer this perspective: Alex Trebek is a remarkable incredible trooper for being able to continue to host Jeopardy to the high standard that he sets.  Chemo really does take it out of you.  I am on a two week cycle for...

Re: Monday, September 16, 2019 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

I guessed Dickens for lack of anything better (never mind that he had been dead for 30 years at that point :? ). Can someone walk me through the thinking that leads to Tolstoy? Or is it as simple as patriarch = Tolstoy? Unsure about his dates, I also said Dickens. I wonder if there was any particul...
