Re: Thursday, May 24, 2018 Game Recap and Discussion [SPOILERS]

Josh is starting to show signs of mental fatigue. Again he had to rally on a DD to win the game. His luck's going to run out eventually. No idea on FJ!, but is anyone else getting tired of seeing geographic category themes? This is the third game in the last five shows geography has shown up in FJ!...

Yeah, I think anyone following these threads and posting anything on this board is obsessed way too much. I mean, I grabbed my phone to look at recipes for potato salad, and I ended up here.
For best results use a good quality Dijon mustard and don't commit a Clavin.

Re: Wednesday, May 23, 2018 Game Recap and Discussion [SPOILERS]

Sadly but predictably, "The Moonstone" was a Triple Stumper, which I thought it would be as soon as I saw the clue. Like I said, hardly anyone reads anymore and thus 90% of contestants are poor at literature. And yet I, thanks to my excellent liberal arts education, also haven't read anything but I...

Re: Tuesday, May 22, 2018 Game Recap and Discussion [SPOILERS]

I knew that 1837 + duel -> Pushkin; they gave the 1837 part, and calling someone a "cuckold" sure seems like it would have been sufficient grounds for a duel, so Pushkin it is. The above is about twelve times more than I ever even suspected about Pushkin, so if you knew enough to piece this FJ toge...

I tried spending the whole time coming up with Ithaca. Can't imagine I would've ever made it to the horse.

Re: Timing of Audition Invite Emails

See you in Cleveland! Got an invite for June 28. Just got my invitation for Cleveland, also June 28!!! My last audition was 2006, the first year of the online quiz era. I've taken every online contestant quiz in the past decade and passed most of them without a nibble. My wife and I are so stoked a...

3-for 5, for the 4th time in the last 5 weeks. I sense a very mediocre pattern here.

Re: Monday, May 14, 2018 Game Recap and Discussion [SPOILERS]

Scott's wagering mistake was serious, but Erika's was fatal. Erika was in a very straightforward four-fifths scenario and should have won on the double stumper, but she apparently had not done any studying on wagering. ...deep sigh....And another game lost because of a contestant knowing nothing ab...

Re: Friday, May 11, 2018 Game Recap and Discussion [SPOILERS]

Now THIS is the kind of FJ I expect in a Teachers' Tournament. Too bad about Ranjani, I was hoping she'd pull out the win after running Shakespeare and coming up with "syzygy". I'm not a huge fan of it; it's almost pure YEKIOYD. I did get it, but I prefer to have to think about it. As Davey said, n...

A lot of easy Triple Stumpers this game, probably as many as we had in the first three games this week combined.
Amen. LT on nose, asbestos, Eddie Rickenbacker, Golden Triangle, cello, Stonewall (Jackson) AND McGuffey.

I couldn't think of anything better than Erma Bombeck, and I was pretty sure she was long dead.
I was pretty sure also she has been gone much longer than that, but she was also all I could come up with. At least we remember the dear lady.

Re: Thursday, May 10, 2018 Game Recap and Discussion [SPOILERS]

Is it just me or have the FJs this tournament been extra tough? They have been for me, but who knows if that's just a run of categories bad for me. Monday: Fargo was absolutely ungettable. Tuesday: Globe Theater was a lucky get. Wednesday: William Tell was right up my alley, but I know opera is, uh...

Re: Wednesday, May 9, 2018 Game Recap and Discussion [SPOILERS]

The old joke used to be that a highbrow is someone who could listen to "William Tell" and NOT think of The Lone Ranger. And of course a generation of kids grew up associating that "galop" with the galloping Silver in the opening credits to the old TV show. This was an easy-peasy get for the old guy....

What would have been built with a thatched roof? Famously destroyed in a fire and rebuilt? Likely not used anymore for much besides being a novelty landmark? Got it. Exactly my line of reasoning. I blinked hard at first, then put the pieces together. To me this was the 180-degree opposite of Monday...

Re: Timing of Audition Invite Emails

Was choosing a preferred audition city mandatory when registering? I don't recall. There was something weird about the audition city selection this go-round, but it was there It wasn't originally. I had to go back in and make a choice. I somehow registered without a selection at first. When I logge...

Re: Thursday, May 3, 2018 Game Recap and Discussion [SPOILERS]

The only way I would have had a chance at FJ is if I had approached it by thinking of films that are often ranked as the greatest of all time. My path was by thinking of famous events that occurred around November 10, so there was no hope for me. Yeah, but nothing in the clue mentioned one of the "...
