Re: Tuesday, February 19, 2019 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

Anyone else read the FJ clue, come up with the tune "London Bridge is falling down," and then start mentally humming/singing it to recall the last line? Yeah, for sure. OK, I use memory devices when needed. But I still thought this was a very nice FJ clue: not a softball, and not a Liederkranz. Nice...

Re: Adult Online Test: Apr 9, 10, 11

I can only hope I do as well as I've done the past few years, but also get through the random selection afterward for the auditions. My luck, however, is abysmal. I'm curious to compare. Between 2009 and 2017, inclusive, I passed a J! online contestant quiz seven times without getting an invitation...

Re: Jeopardy All-Star Games

I'm interested in seeing what they have in mind as a format. 6 teams playing 10 games is weird. You could conceivably have each team play 4 games against some combination of opponents, with the three highest scorers advancing to the final (presumably a 2-game total-point affair), but how it would w...

Re: Fourth Podium Poll for 2/18/2019 (SPOILERS)

I did a fair bit of clamming on stuff I might have gotten right (rotorcraft, etc.) but was too timid to pull the trigger. With LT on neonatal, speedy (trial), lyre, USS Maine, and Punic Wars, I ended DJ with $5800 in LT. From the imaginary 4th podium I would certainly have bet enough to cover all th...

Re: Monday, February 18, 2019 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

I also winced upon seeing the FJ category: BritLit not my strong suit. However, I put down Wells with fair confidence. Um, Verne? Maybe a moment of complete brain fart followed by "any answer is better than no answer." I wasn't as surprised as many here to see that this was a TS. More shocking to me...

Re: Friday, February 15, 2019 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

For FJ I had a coin flip between Goodyear and Firestone and had a vague memory of Goodyear refining the vulcanization process so I went with him. That was my difficulty as well. I was pretty sure the clue was referring to rubber, but which guy? Fortunately I chose wisely. Ran the category in word p...

Re: Toughest FJ! clues Season 32 (9/14/15 - 7/29/16)

1. Ones that I actually got when the games aired: Pandora, Lord Byron 2. Ones that I did not get but which, at the reveal, at least made me think, "Oh, yeah! That makes sense.": Lewis Carroll, PC, Kierkegaard, Scott Kelly, Leeward Islands. 3. Absurd, ungettable, and the ones I voted for: Stromboli, ...

Re: Thursday, February 14, 2019 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

This was a good FJ. Very difficult to instaget, but should be able to suss out in 30 seconds. My mental tour of Texas border cities got me to Brownsville well within time. 8-) Ditto. The year places the war in time as the Mexican-American War, which immediately draws attention to Texas rather than ...

Overall good game for me: Ran the cats (until FJ that is :D ) in sports, horror, point, and opera (yes, opera). and got 50 right overall, which basically never happens. Coryat over $40K, which also may be a first.

Then, um, T. S. Eliot. Boo, hiss....

OK, I must have missed that discussion in lit class. How do those animal names lead to T.S. Eliot? I guessed Ogden Nash and never looked back. :?:
I guessed Ogden Nash and looked all over the place: Seuss, Carroll, everywhere but Eliot. Dang.

Re: Wednesday, February 13, 2019 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

Congratulations on getting a little bit of that crucial Jeopardy luck to extend your run via an overly-aggressive 2nd place wager. "Overly-aggressive?" Is THAT what this is called now? How about sub-optimal? Or, like the knight in "Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade": "He chose poorly." Or how abou...

I'm so glad to see the Friday Shakespeare FJ is polling so low. Makes it a bit easier for me to swallow missing it and missing the 5-for-5 week.

Re: Tuesday, February 12, 2019 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

Another very, very strong game for the champ. $76K in two outings? That's no fluke. Ran the categories: Bugs Bunny, peaceful guns. And of course I got Zoloft, which is the only way I get through a viewing of J! at home without smashing something. Only LT of the night: annihilate. But I instaget Capt...

Re: FJs for the 2/4/19 week

So Taming of the Shrew is polling at 19% right now. I imagine that's not a record low; can anyone tell me which clues have scored lower? Or, I suppose, more usefully, can anyone tell me how I can find out for myself which clues have scored lower? That takes SOME of the sting out of losing a 5-for-5...

Re: Monday, February 11, 2019 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

OK, I'll ask the stupid question no one else here seems to be asking. What led to getting this FJ right? I for one couldn't tell you what show is on what network, almost 100% of the time. I've seen Grey's Anatomy a few times years ago and am vaguely aware it is still on, but have no clue how many ye...

Re: Friday, February 8, 2019 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

That was definitely one of the luckiest wins ever. Is it? Everyone bet properly so this is what I’d expect from a difficult FJ. (Difficult for me at least because I'm familiar enough with the material and thought it must have been a gender bender comedy like Twelfth Night). Uh, no. Bif and Josh bet...

Re: Thursday, February 7, 2019 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

At this point I have to concede that Bif has more going for him to get him on the show than just the unusual name. This was a very strong, dominating performance for a well-deserved runaway second win. Should be really interesting to see how far he takes this. Amanda? Boy, did she have a rocky start...

Re: Thursday, February 7, 2019 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

I got JFK right away, and got confused about the number of letters like Alan did. It didn't help that my dad and brother were discussing things aloud, and I realized W. just after the music ended. For this one I will claim my prerogative of counting an FJ that I believe I would have gotten without ...
