Re: Wednesday, October 17, 2018 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

Another nice game for the champ, who seems on the way to topping $100K and securing a berth in the ToC. I'd take that any day. Congrats, Alan! Typical for me: ran the category in "NV" and 0-for-5 in books about bands (no, still know nothing about rock music). LT: a capella and babushka, nothing else...

Re: The Rankest Thread Imaginable

As I was leaving the green room, Corina handed me my parting gift: a Jeopardy tote bag. I asked "Does it have a giant bottle of Aleve inside?" Alas, no. Just a Jeopardy baseball cap that even I'm not nerdy enough to actually wear. What's up, Aleve? Why you holdin' out on us? They're giving out caps...

Re: Tuesday, October 16, 2018 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

Scores at the end of the first round made me wonder how much of a rout this was going to be for Alan. I was astonished to see both of the new contestants make a game of it. Good for them.

And Alan....you go, guy! Really nice run going on here.

Re: Monday, October 15, 2018 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

Today's game demonstrated my strengths and weaknesses: DRIVING, 5 Ws IN THE BOOKSTORE, 10-LETTER WORDS, SOCIAL MEDIA ABBREV.-- ran 'em all. WHICH STAR WARS, A JOB IN TELEVISION, I'M GONNA PRAY ON THIS, OPERA -- all 1/5 or 2/5, with most of my gets in the upper boxes. Though several of the Star Wars...

Re: What Determines For Whom You Root on Jeopardy?

I root for those who don’t act like idiots. I root against most who start their sentences with “so...” if someone has an interesting story, I root for them. I know there's a lot of discussion about players' personalities, and different people like different things. I think I'm with you on this. I l...

I root for anyone who seems to take trivia and/or quizbowl seriously and isn't just on Jeopardy! for the experience, and anyone from Ohio.
And where are YOU from, BTW?

LT tonight: Voltaire and maelstrom. Slim pickings in this game. Alex looks more impressive with each successive win. I was profoundly impressed with his sole get on FJ. And of course he parlayed that into a win with a perfect wager. Kudos also to Patrick on a strong game and a perfect final wager. W...

Re: Thursday, October 11, 2018 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

Did the writers purposely intend the misdirection with the clue prior to DD1 being something on water and making me once again thinking water when I saw “craft” & “knots” in the wording? I was at sea to switch gears to the intended type of craft. Same here. I guessed "yacht" just to have something ...

Did anyone else respond to the Jabberwocky clue with "outgribe" for pedantry's sake, since "outgrabe" is the past tense?
As old as I am, I've never seen anyone try to conjugate that verb before.

Re: Wednesday, October 10, 2018 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

I connected "service" to the Labors, and had "underworld" also help me get Hercules as the right response. Exactly. Six = half of the services. Hercules should have come to mind immediately. I got it, and so did Alex, but Mary and Chris wandered off to other destinations. Alex looks gooooood as he ...

Re: Tuesday, October 9, 2018 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

I had an OK---unspectacular---game. I scooped up only 4 TSs worth $3,200 in LT. Ran categories: trees, fill in the quotes. I will give myself a pat on the back for getting Leroy Nieman Marcus and Mary Leakey, as well as an Instaget on the Churchill FJ. I never knew that he had been nominated for the...

OTOH, I had no idea about birch. Is either the canoe part or the fast-growing part common knowledge?
I remember hearing in grade school about Indians making birch-bark canoes. I don't know if it's common knowledge now, 100 years later. But yeah, it was then.

Re: Friday, October 5, 2018 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

On first blush, it seemed to me D-Day invasion was too obvious since "supreme allied commander" was an obvious ref. to Eisenhower. Went with "link-up of Allied and Soviet forces" since Cossacks are Russian soldiers. Yes, Cossacks are Russian soldiers. Unfortunately COSSAC doesn't refer to that. Als...

Olive oil makes so much sense in retrospect, but I didn't get it. All I could come up with was honey.

Nice win by Sara.
I also thought of honey for about two seconds, then remembered having heard the "olive oil" story some time back. Almost Instaget.

What a beatdown. At first I didn't think he'd get to five days, but he seems to be improving with each game. And he even threw in a J! round TDD! Instaget FJ. I have no idea why. I don't know much about the Reformation, but somehow (perhaps from all of the clues Mark posted?), the Geneva connection...

Re: Tuesday, October 2, 2018 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

All the talk about whether the category name was confusing seems to have spared Cody a lot of well-deserved grief for his FJ wager. I'm thinking he outsmarted himself by wagering "little enough" not to fall behind Kirsten if he negged and she doubled her score. And forgot that he might win on a doub...

Hi all, I'm Kirsten Morry from last night's episode. You have correctly interpreted my train of thought on Final Jeopardy - I preferred to write something down rather than nothing. I was obviously having trouble ringing in - Cody and Doug were both very fast and well-timed. In Double Jeopardy, I ra...

Duchamp is a blind spot, you could've given me all day and I wouldn't have got him. But Liberty Leading the People? Easy peasy. Threw out Ron Howard for FJ just to have something. Veterans of this board already know my thoughts on the category. I'm very familiar with the Duchamp work. I believe it ...

Re: Tuesday, October 2, 2018 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

And I'll grant that Oscars is a tougher category that it might otherwise seem, given that there are close to 100 years of Oscars with 5 (or more) nominees in each of the big categories. Still, they tend to focus on winners in the past 40 years so it's at least a tad more manageable than some other ...
