Re: Monday, October 12, 2020 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

Monday Night Football pre-empted J! here in the Los Angeles area. Shows are a day late all week. I’m another in the cicada camp. Thought about some generic beetle, but figured that was too vague. As soon as Alex gave his hint, I knew the answer. I knew of the annual migration to Mexico, but didn’t k...

Re: Wednesday, September 30, 2020 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

The presidents who were elected in years divisible by 20 and died in office are the markers on which I hang their successors and predecessors. That T. Roosevelt succeeded McKinley - who won the 1900 election - initially threw me for a loop. But then I recalled the story from his time post-presidency...

PS - My precall for FJ was that whatever it was we were going to look for around the great lakes, it wasn't the Erie Canal. Not with the Panama canal on the DJ board - with it's negbait Suez canal lurking in the background for those who aren't attentive to dates. No canals.

Re: FJs for the 9/21/20 week

Best I could do Monday was “Helen Keller’s teacher”. Wrong on multiple counts. I’m another visitor to India on a wild guess. Pretty quickly got to the right sport (must be golf or tennis, and tennis players don’t make that kind of money), but had no idea whom to guess. Knew Tiger was too young and N...

Re: Fourth Podium Poll for 9/16/2020

My ability to get 50-50 guesses wrong is unparalleled. Newport or Portland? Davy or Daniel? Wrong and wrong. And yes, I even started singing "Born on a mountaintop in Tennessee" before making my selection. But how can you be the "first" to settle an area if your parents already live there? And they'...

Re: Monday, September 14, 2020 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

Well, "few" is pretty nebulous. What constitutes a few out of 46? 3 out of 10 is likely safe to call a few, so does that let us say 14 is a few weeks out of 46? Just to add to the confusion, is that a few weeks broadcast time? A few weeks taping time? Who knows? PS - Note to self, Parthenon and Pan...

Re: Season 37 changes and predictions

Anyways, another change I found out about is Ken Jennings will join the show as a consulting producer and will make his own video clues. This bit of news has got me thinking. While I want to see Alex continue as host for as long as he is able, the reality is that the end of his tenure is on the hor...

Somewhat OT: Harvard Classics

I thought some readers here might be interested in a good deal from Amazon on the Harvard Classics. 51 works of classic literature, plus their 20 volume shelf of fiction. The good news: It costs $1.99 The bad news, it is only available on Kindle for that price. (They've got the hardback version at s...

Re: Friday, May 1, 2020 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

Count me among the lost souls on this final. And apologies for the very late reply. I just took the clue as a given for what the writers intended and figured the UN would bother to publish a list of members in every separate language. I also figure the UN would have a list of member states by offici...

      :( Forgive me for the very late response. I'm way behind on watching the DVR. But I had to brag on my first 5/5 since discovering these boards. Monday was a bit of an educated and lucky guess. I'm sure I've heard the Queensbury rules...

Re: GOAT Tournament Day 4 (1/14/20) Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

I'm extremely late to this party, so forgive me for resurrecting the old thread. I just finished watching all 4 days and had to make a couple of comments. I somehow managed to be surprised at the ending even after being spoiled on the overall result. Like a couple of others, my DVR recorded "day 5" ...

Re: Wednesday, December 18, 2019 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

I'm on the west coast, so the political theater didn't interrupt the J! airing for me. I stayed clam initially on the 3rd/5th wheel clue. The description sounded like what I've always known as a 3rd wheel. But that didn't make sense for a carriage. Never heard the phrase 5th wheel in that context. I...

Re: Tuesday, December 17, 2019 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

Some days you're the hammer, some days you're the nail. That's got to sting a bit after such a strong performance yesterday.

I wrestled with FJ trying to come up with some alternative to "vote". The date just seemed wrong for an election. Fortunately, nothing as likely came to mind.

As far as this Anteater is concerned, Opus properly explained the meaning of Zot! So now readers are in position to understand that UC Irvine students get quarterly ZOTBills for their tuition and other fees. Yes - they say ZOTBill right on them. And you can pay them online through your ZOT account. ...

Re: Wednesday, December 11, 2019 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

I think you're underestimating the people here. I'd bet a solid 25% would know Hanford. Although I could be overestimating based on it being in Washington. Depends on how it's asked. Ask me what happens at Hanford, and I'll say it's a lab working on nuclear projects. Ask me for the name of the Nucl...

Re: Wednesday, December 11, 2019 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

I thought the judges were generous to give Jennifer credit for whatever she said instead of (Charles) Perrault. I turned on closed captions and they transcribed her response as “Pure-Oh”, whereas I’m pretty sure she was saying something closer to Pierrot. Maybe it was the right call for a foreign n...
