Re: RIP rmfromfla

Robert and MarkBarrett were the first J! überfans I encountered back in the long-ago days on the Sony boards. Both were invaluable sources of information in the those pre-Archive days, and beyond. Robert and I kept in touch for a few years, but, sad to say, fell out of contact other than chance enco...

Re: Monday, September 9, 2019 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

I don't know where my brain was vacationing during Final Jeopardy!, but my response was "Goth." If I'd been a contestant, maybe my sloppy handwriting could've made it look enough like "Gath" to get me the win, but I doubt it. Now I am imagining Goliath with his hair dyed black, wearing eyeliner and...

Re: Thursday, July 25, 2019 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

Initially dismissed Hotel California, as I've always associated it with 1977 (the title track wasn't released as a single until late February of that year), but no other album of that time that I could think of seemed to fit the clue.

"Javier Bardem" sounded Brazilian and not Spanish to me. Not like I know who that is, anyway.
I'd have been tempted to guess "What is a country unsuited for old men?" or something similar.

I guessed Kodak for FJ! I seemed to have completely misunderstood what the clue was asking . Those numbers seemed too big for Kodak, but I couldn't think of another photograph company where 1889 seemed reasonable. I thought of Kodak first because the year sounded right -- in fact, the company...

Is James the first contestant to have runaways in 4 of his or her first 5 games? Even Ken "only" had 3. The archive confirms that Chuck Forrest (his fifth win was a lock-tie scenario entering FJ), Robin Carroll, and Rick Knutsen had runaways in all five of their regular-season games. According to S...

The leader of the City Slickers? Nice fogey trash for the home viewers. Hey! Barring an unforeseen collapse by Team Ken, we're looking at yet another title match involving J!'s resident multi-millionaires. Must be nice to get a call from TPTB every few years to the effect of, "hey, can you come bac...

Precalled Hindenburg, but initially thought the clue was too obscure for the youngish contestants. Glad to have been wrong. Long, long ago, Herb Morrison spoke to my first-year journalism class at WVU, where he helped establish the school's radio/TV unit. His broadcast, as many of you know, didn't a...

"The Sopranos" premiered 20 years ago Thursday. That milestone received a lot of play in the media this week, making it an easy precall for quite a few home viewers, I suspect. Of course, contestants taping months ago would not have been aware of that anniversary.

Nobody else has mentioned Tom Lehrer yet -- as soon as I saw the FJ clue I got an earworm from "Alma, Tell Us" that lasted about half an hour. "While married to Gus she met Gropius, And soon she was swinging with Walter. Gus died and her teardrops were copious. She cried all the way to the altar. B...

I don't know if anybody knew about it since I haven't seen it mentioned on here anywhere, but 5-time champion and ToC veteran Mark Eckard passed away last year. https://www.legacy.com/obituaries/york/ ... =186878736
Thanks for sharing. I hadn't heard. Sad news, indeed.

Stagecoach won two Oscars, and is the name of a town in Texas (population 538, per the 2010 Census). Now, if the stagecoach had been invented in the 19th century by a guy named Joe Stagecoach ... Other films that have won exactly two Oscars and are the names of actual cities, towns, or villages in ...

Re: Reretaken Down

Speaking of the Oscars -- The Washington Post published a list of all of the Best Picture winners so you can see how many you've seen. I'm somewhere around 82 (I made it a project a few years back to try to see the ones I hadn't seen), but there were 3 or 4 that I couldn't remember whether I'd seen...
