Re: Thursday, November 7, 2019 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

The producers will almost certainly do whatever maximizes the odds of James/Emma in the finals. I would expect that, subject to a couple of seemingly hard rules (no QF rematches in the SFs, and attempt at gender distribution), Emma will get one of the softer draws they could give her, James will be ...

Re: Friday, June 14, 2019 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

I used to do polio communications for a job, including the last time I was on the show, and let me say it is not clear at all that people know that polio is still a going concern in many places (specifically in Pakistan and Afghanistan), even if it's been a while in the US. If anyone feels like they...

Re: Monday, June 3, 2019 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

I'm probably not the only one who was spoiled by Maggie Haberman retweeting the spoiler while saying "spoiler alert" - which ought to be an all-time example of poor retweeting.

Congratulations to Emma on a historic win and James on a historic run. Also throwing in my support for an UUTOC.

Re: Monday, February 11, 2019 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

What a game. Curious: is Bif's 24k competitive for highest second-place score going into final? (In regular season, maybe?)

There have been some very fun contestants lately who won't quite make the TOC but who are clearly TOC-caliber. Sorry Bif - we enjoyed watching you!

Re: New old games in the J! Archive

We had time for another game, and what a doozy it was. Following Bruce Simmons's ToC on the tape was his 3rd regular game, April 15, 1992, vs Jack Pitney and Catherine Menser. Oh, I meant to mention. Jack Pitney was the student adviser of 2007 contestant Richard Johnson . https://www.cmc.edu/news/a...

Jason Thweatt was on Millionaire in 2001 and won 32k before being on Jeopardy at the end of 2007.

Re: Millionaire 2016-17 Season Discussion [SPOILERS]

Thanks guys. I think the big mistake was using Larissa on the 30k. It helped that she thought the same thing, but it was a great example of a question you could reason out, and I managed to do that shortly after bringing her up. And as it turned out, she knew the 50k one. I clearly was in my own hea...

Bugging me - why couldn't the answer be Jefferson? He's there, too, if stage directions are to be believed :)

I thought for sure the New Delhi clue would be poppies given the opium trade in the region. I guess 6m deaths is high.

Wow, that is an absurdly high cut-off for three games in. And with a bunch of FJ misses, too. Goes to the strength of the field.

Re: Wednesday, July 29, 2015 Game Recap & Discussion [SPOILERS]

Pretty sure this is tied with mine for the lowest winning score, post-doubling. It's unfortunate (for other than the obvious reason): the second-lowest score, to my knowledge, was $255 from my law school classmate Murtaza about three weeks after me.

Re: Think Different 223: No Muggles Allowed!

I missed this, but just flipped through it and had a lot of fun coming up with obscure answers - like I think Snape possessed the Marauder's Map briefly when it made fun of him, and I think Pettigrew is in every movie as one species or another.

Nicely written.

Re: Friday, October 17, 2014 Game Recap & Discussion [SPOILERS]

I went with Panama, too. The country was founded right when construction on the canal began; seemed like a pretty solid guess. It did happen at the beginning of the 20th century, so while that's not logically disqualifying you can see how the writers would think "19th century sailing ship" would poi...

Re: Friday, May 16, 2014 Game Recap & Discussion [SPOILERS]

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BnzRIr-F9bQ Here is a video put up by Jeopardy of tonight's FJ from the players peanut gallery. Looking at this video, it looks like the audience consisted of the tournament players and the families of the finalists, and that might be it. Was this in fact the case? P...

Re: FJs for the 5/12/14 week

It's funny that the polls don't bear this out, but the consensus from the BOTD contestants in the audience was that the second week of FJs were considerably easier than the first week.
