Re: New old games in the J! Archive

This brownish-purple color derives its name from the French word for "flea" What is puce? I knew that one because I had stayed at a small French hotel once and was bitten up by what I thought were fleas (but were almost certainly bedbugs in retrospect) and had to go to a pharmacy to get something t...

I said "What is the Rhône" in my best Bill Murray deadpan at the appropriate moment: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9lXmvunn7XI Watching the clip, the other people seem very surprised and impressed that he knew the Finger Lakes. But he was in central Pennsylvania, which isn't all that far from the...

Speaking of Simon ... I was on the radio in college at Brown, and the station got an invitation to a cocktail reception in Newport for the introduction of Super Simon. It was being hosted by Ted Turner (at that time competing in the America's Cup). Since there was going to be free food, I offered to...

So sorry it didn't work out for you, Randy. I hope you had fun nonetheless.

I got FJ right, but I don't think it was a good one. On the reveal, Germany would have seemed to have been a better response. Or Austria, for that matter.

Does anyone know what barbarians have to do with Monaco anyway?

Fingers crossed ...

For the third year in a row, the average life expectancy in the United States has declined. The last time American life expectancy declined three years in a row was during the final stages of World War I and the ensuing Spanish Flu pandemic. A study published in the Journal of the American Medical ...

Not the least of which was Jennifer. She was suspect to taking random guesses in her first game. Today she cost herself at least a crush going into FJ. I was amazed that she managed to stay clam on that Fenway Park clue. I suspect Chris was following Kelly's lead, thinking she was on the right trac...

Any reason I should know that German salad is made from potatoes? It's not German salad, it's German this salad, or German ___________ salad. The foodie route to the answer is to know what German _____ salad distinctively uses vinegar. Which doesn't help since I have literally never heard of German...

I don’t know opera at all well. Don Juan . Judges? —Bob Tough call, but I'd vote no. Right name, wrong language. That would be like saying "Clowns" for "Pagliacci", or perhaps more saliently, "Don John." Methinks you aren't going to be the only person to say Don Juan. +1, alas. Once he said Mozart,...

It was a good thing Gallic is only 6 letters. Then, going around the map in my head I came up with Prussia and remembered that Prussian blue is a thing. Didn't help, but at least I had the satisfaction of getting it right.

Good to see that cmp146 got the prussic acid question correct (and got 2 points for it!). Shoutout to Professor Pruss who is now leading A Magnolia! Star Trek writer/editor D.C. Fontana dies at 80.
I wouldn't be surprised if a J! clue gives "D.C." and asks for her full first name (Dorothy -- D.C. stands for "Dorothy Catherine").
Wait, what? Not District Columbia?

The "Oh, no!" is my favorite Alexism for a wrong answer.

I will say it again: As long at they're not going to leave the name of the category up on the screen, I hate HATE HATE HATE categories like In "Extremis".

I was NOT surprised by the reversal on "light opera". As soon as Alex gave her response, I knew she was right. I went with their expected "operetta" myself. But "light opera" was immediately obvious as a correct alternative. Alex really needs to be more careful with his category announcements when ...
