Re: Thursday, March 21, 2019 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

I'm fortunate that I'm not feeling my age physically, but life reminds you that you're getting older. I'm playing oboe in Beethoven's First Symphony this semester with a 30-year-old (excellent) conductor. The first time I played Beethoven's First was before he was born! There used to be a time when...

Painful 2(3)-3(3) loss for me yesterday. I absolutely knew who the first host of The Daily Show was but stupidly put Craig Claiborne (the famous NYT restaurant critic) down for an answer. Bah! Re: Previous J! contestants: Did you track money in real time?

If you watch the contestants carefully, you will occasionally see them glancing up and to their left, especially when they're making a DD wager.

Kazakhstan has renamed the national capital from Astana to Nursultan in honor of their outgoing president of 30 years, Nursultan Nazarbayev. https://www.bbc.com/news/world-asia-47638619 It would be nice to have all those recent country and capital name changes in one place. I'm losing track of them...

I'm with twelvefootboy; you must be really fun at parties. i don't do parties...i hate being around people...i am misanthropic...can't you tell by my name? Which would make it all the more fun to see you at a party. Kinda of a fish outta water or cat in the water sorta thing, but without a life-thr...

Millionaire was very specific about wearing no shade of blue, because players who wear blue end up getting lost in the set. So that eliminated 90% of my wardrobe options
Between no blue, how long it's been since I've worn suits, and weight gain, I had to run out and buy a suit real fast.

THE CIA $800: In 1987 he went from FBI director to CIA director
SpoilerShow
Who is William Webster?
If this had come up now, I might have gotten it. He was in the news just last month (and is a hero to me for what he did):

Re: LL80: LearnedLeague

I was proud to get the parsec question right, as I was quite unsure of both parts. I didn't know what parallax meant, but I thought it was something cosmic, and I considered splitting the difference between "second" and "secant" for the other part, but since they're both such simple words, I feared...

I think it's a terrible clue for Watson. It involves synthesis of two fields of knowledge (state capitals and postal abbreviations) and not just straight knowledge of facts. Unless somewhere in its databases is a list of wordplay facts about state capitals that includes the fact that Albany ends wi...

I went with Johnson. I would think there are a lot more places named Johnson than Clinton. Sadly, I was wrong and it cost me the match 6(4)-7(4) against somebody I never am able to beat.

Re: Millionaire 2018-19 Season Discussion [SPOILERS]

One thing that occurred to me after the taping that I wished I had thought of in the moment-- and I absolutely would have done this if it had occurred to me in the moment-- was to suggest to Louis that we share the risk. If he guessed B and it was wrong, I would give him $12,500 (half of what he wo...

Got Esther but BOO HISS (Rattle) was lost on me From Wikipedia: In Judaism, the gragger is used for the holiday of Purim. The gragger is used every time Haman's name is mentioned during the reading of the Megillah. Because Haman persecuted the Jews, the noise is supposed to symbolically drown out h...

9(5)-9(5) tie for me: I figured my opponent with gaudy scores in food and drink would get Granny Smith, but he must have missed the puzzle. I was about to bite on Vegemite (blecch!), but kept going back and reading about her husband and descendants. Thorsten doesn't put something in the clue unless...

I didn't know Ken's middle name was Wayne. I thought that was reserved for serial killers. Oh, wait, in a manner of speaking ...

And Austin won more than $50k. And there were a few more errors in there not worth bothering about.

Must have been right after you sang a Handel Ontario.
