Re: Friday, November 17, 2017 Game Recap and Discussion [SPOILERS]

I never considered Vermont, because I knew it became a state in 1791 (the year before Kentucky). So for me, the year in clue was an an anti-TOM.

Re: Inter-TD quizzing

While Randy's continues, I'll pose one of my own that I inadvertently stumbled upon while preparing for a Geeks Who Drink outing. The band Cake has covered a number songs previously recorded by other artists. By my count, there are 12. Name the songs and original artists. Wasn't "Perhaps Perhaps Pe...

I feel like Cate Blanchett was also nominated for Elizabeth: The Golden Age, but I may be wrong about that. (I remember that it was nominated for something, but it might have been something else.)

I was 100% convinced 12 Angry Men was right. Oops.

Got Peaceable Kingdom and Dover Beach from the UToC.

There was a question on this week's University Challenge that asked who wrote "do I dare to eat a peach?" Glad to see the players here got it (it was a stumper on UC).

Yeah, I was going to just guess the Carters as an old-school country family until I recognized that the Maybelle in the question was Mother Maybelle Carter, so it went from a WAG to fairly certain.

Re: Wednesday, November 8, 2017 Game Recap and Discussion [SPOILERS]

There was another clue in this show that was recently used in LearnedLeague. It was the one about "Come From Away." I can't remember now if the LL question was in the regular league or one of the recent mini leagues. I think it was in the Aviation 1DS. Correct. Good memory! https://learnedleague.co...

I did not get picked. But I only stayed for one session. Anand, the champion from this week, did get picked in my session.
Odd he got picked so close to his J! appearance.
It's literally pulling slips of paper out of a hopper.

Re: The Official TPH Education Thread (POTENTIAL GAME DAY SPOILERS)

Facts and Figures for $600 and $800 seemed like total coinflips: earthquake/tsunami or GoFundMe/Kickstarter? Of course I picked the wrong one of both. It’s a lot easier to get the exact time of an earthquake than a tsunami. For Gofundme, the devil’s in the details- they said “personal causes,” wher...

That World of Telescopes DD was brutal. OTOH, is it possible for a FJ! to poll above 100%?
It wasn't that bad for a DD in a $2000 spot. Plus, "Trappist" makes me think of the Trappist monks and their beer, which is traditionally Belgian.

I saw no way to figure out "Spain" at all in Musical for $200. What was the TOM there? I think solo classical guitar tends to be a Spanish thing, and solo classical guitar is what the audio was. Any reason I should know that Protestant dates from the 16th century and not any other? Martin Luther di...

What was the correct answer on the Jelly Belly clue about the fruit bowl mix? I looked up blueberry but i thought that got negged?
It was acai.

I briefly considered both Edgar Cayce and Casey Kasem before I remembered that Casey Jones was a Kentuckian.

Fats Domino is dead at 89.
Robert Guillaume also dead at 89
Before Donald Glover won the Best Actor in a Comedy Emmy this year, Guillaume had been the last African-American to win that award, for Benson in 1985.

Although I'm at the very tail end of the target audience for the original Electric Company, I certainly yelled out "HEY YOU GUYS!" while running the category.

I yelled out something completely different after Manny's wager was revealed. What was that?

Thanks Mark. Surprised to see her lock in on Mauritius (which comes from Prince Maurice of Nassau of the Netherlands, Mauritius is the Latin version of that name) after correctly identifying that Argentina comes from Latin for "silver". Oddly enough, Maurice originally comes from the Latin for "pers...

For the first (?) clue in the COOKIE JAR category, I reflexively answered "Who are the Girl Guides" because that's what they are known as here, but I negged as I didn't think the flavours mentioned (tagalongs, trefoils, and s'mores) were offered by the Girl Guides (I just remember my daughter selli...

I'm at .931 in the JI Movies ML (2 UfPA). The more amazing thing is that my opponents have only scored 10 total points thus far. The minileague hasn't been easy, but it certainly hasn't been that hard.

For Bowling Green it's a famous city because it's home to a large university
Bowling Green State University is in Ohio, not Kentucky.
But Western Kentucky University (Go Hilltoppers!) is.
