Re: Learned League 87 -- Nov/Dec 2020

I mentally associate Joe DiMaggio with the 50s because of Marilyn Monroe, and he retired in 1951, but I see now that his career started in 1936. I had a feeling the coffee ad was about a guy like DiMaggio but I specifically ruled him out. Shows what I know.

Got 'em all but Thumbelina. Guessed the Little Match Girl instead. Was not familiar with "thumb" in either French or Spanish.

I knew the answer for the Monopoly question was two of Indiana/Illinois/Kentucky, but it's been so long since I've played (it's a bad game!) that I forgot which one was separated from the other two by the Chance space.

Yeah, when Reagan had his electoral landslide in 1984, it was a mostly blue map. The networks used red and blue for the states, but there was not really consistency from election to election as to which party was which color. It wasn't until the 2000 election that the red=Republican and blue=Democra...

NHO Kevin Kwan or Bill Bryson.
Bryson's a fairly well-known travel writer. Kwan wrote the books that the film Crazy Rich Asians (and its upcoming sequel(s?)) were based on.

The Los Angeles Dodgers won Game 6 of the World Series 3-1 to clinch the MLB title, 4 games to 2. This is the franchise's first title in 32 years, having last won in 1988.

Our broadcast was interrupted by the national security press conference, but I did get to see about half - we cut out at about the first commercial break and came back about 2/3 of the way through DJ. The only words you needed to see for FJ were "blacklist" and "screenwriter". There's basically only...

Arterial was a terrible trap. It's almost as if they put the word "adjective" in the clue just so the writers could go "haw haw". A better clue would have been "Word that describes blood leaving the heart" - arterial doesn't only have to refer to the vessels themselves, so you could make it more pa...

CBS originally produced the pilot episode of Law & Order but passed on it before NBC picked it up. I guess JAG moving to CBS makes them even.

I knew there was something in this game that bothered me besides the final. Accuracy and precision are similar yet quite distinct concepts. Accuracy means that you are always in the general vicinity of what you are aiming at. Imagine you are throwing at a dartboard and trying to hit the bullseye; so...

A fuller version of the Copland quote is that "Martha [Graham]’s Ballet (eventually to be called Appalachian Spring) concerned a pioneer celebration in spring around a newly built farmhouse in the Pennsylvania hills in the early part of the last [19th] century." Easy to see why the ellipses were pla...

My immediate reaction was "type A???" During the 30 seconds, I also came up with daredevil, exhibitionist, and masochist, but I had to think that those were older than the time period that was being implied, so I stuck with my initial guess.
