I had the definitions of cryonics and cryogenics flipped in my head. Cost me the tie.
Cost me the win.

Re: LearnedLeague 77 - Official Thread

Surprisingly, I managed to eke out a win against Teacup in Rundle in the Jundle, but only managed a tie against Reddpen, who defended me perfectly (as I did him). This despite the head-slapper on Q5: 1994 film, Rita Hayworth? I never saw The Adventures of Priscilla Queen of the Desert, but the time...

Re: LearnedLeague 77 - Official Thread

If I had remembered that the Nile is the only major river to flow south to north, I would have won yesterday. As it was, I waffled between the Caspian Sea and the Arctic Ocean and chose wrong.

Re: LearnedLeague 77 - Official Thread

Rundle in the Jundle has also become a very competitive place. Teapot has his accustomed spot atop the standings, but I'm trying to claw my way up (tough going, though) This is why I spent several hours mulling the "thug" question. I was pretty sure I needed to get them all right to tie you - and I...

Re: LearnedLeague 77 - Official Thread

"Thug" was easier if you remember Temple of Doom - the Thuggee cult and their worship of Kali was prominent in that film.

Re: Thursday, June 14, 2018 Game Recap and Discussion [SPOILERS]

I thought this was an awful, awful FJ clue. Strings to me are Libra and Sagittarius. When both of those were revealed to be wrong I was utterly confounded as to what other constellation would have strings in it. Never in a million years would I have thought of Pisces (I mean, *eventually* I would ha...

I was glad to see Mission: Impossible in the TV category, as it's my favorite show. Disappointed to not be able to remember Sebastian Cabot's first name, though.

Instaget from the word "Hamlet".

Re: Tuesday, June 12, 2018 Game Recap and Discussion [SPOILERS]

Interesting point that may help people in the future: The full sentence is "Now is the winter of our discontent made glorious summer by this sun of York." The words are (as so often in Shakespeare and other old-time poets) out of order - "The winter of our discontent is now made glorious summer by ...

Re: Monday, June 11, 2018 Game Recap and Discussion [SPOILERS]

Couldn't think of anything for FJ! Six inches seemed too far apart for a trombone, and didn't seem right for a tuba either. I pondered if maybe an early saxophone was that big. I was still trying to grind this one out when the music ended, leaving me with nothing. HOW WAS THIS A TRIPLE GET?!? If on...

Harry Potter and the Cursed Child picks up Best Play along with 5 other Tonys, with Angels ...

Re: LearnedLeague 77 - Official Thread

Luckily, my map-of-the-world shower curtain has the province of Cabinda labeled separately (since it's an exclave), which made me look up what it was. I was waffling between Hammacher Schlemmer and Sharper Image for Q6. I don't know if Nieman Marcus would have ever come to me. This has been the best...

The Stallone question COMPLETELY missed me. The Expendables franchise is not my cup of tea, so I never saw any of them.

Knew it was the science of birds.

Completely forgot what the science of birds was called.

Went with "zoology" and hoped that would be enough. (I am not giving myself credit.)

I think that not accepting "Roosevelt Doctrine" for "Roosevelt Corollary" is ticky-tack.
But amazingly, "Theodore Roosevelt" was accepted. *shrug*

Re: The Official TPH Education Thread (POTENTIAL GAME DAY SPOILERS)

I think his point was that a bordering country is not likely to be the farthest away from the UK. It could be. They once had an FJ! about "First president to X since Obama" and the answer was Clinton, only TWO PRESIDENTS PRIOR. I would like to know what possible fluke of geography would lead somewh...

Re: The Official TPH Education Thread (POTENTIAL GAME DAY SPOILERS)

Not knowing about the Commonwealth is certainly going to work against you. But the only country in the world to border the UK (Ireland) is not going to be a correct response to that clue. The full name of the UK might be a clue: The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. But the Repu...

Re: Millionaire 2017-18 Season Discussion [SPOILERS]

I found the study referenced in my final question: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3655692/pdf/nihms367518.pdf Page 12 lists the average time of "first-stage duration from 4 cm to C/C" as the correct answer. I can't figure out what "C/C" means, though. Completely dilated / completely e...
