Re: Wednesday, March 20, 2019 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

I came up with Stuart for FJ, but isn't this a strange way to phrase a clue? "Family name of Bonnie Prince Charlie’s brother Henry" Um, wasn't that Bonnie Prince Charlie's family name, too? Is there some reason they worded the clue this way? My thinking is Bonnie Prince Charlie is there to get you ...

Re: Apparel/Appearance of Contestants

The biggest thing for me was that certain patterns, especially very fine patterns with close lines, can cause the cameras into a moire effect, essentially making it look like the shirt or tie or whatever is pulsating.

How was "Everest" right in China for $400? I thought Everest was in Nepal? A third 0/5 for me. Mt Everest is on the border of China (Tibet) and Nepal (the border runs directly through the summit). I used to have a National Geographic map of the mountain with its three names: Everest, Sagarmatha (Ne...

Re: TD 414 - The Academy Awards - Q5 Revealed!!

Yeah, I knew that was coming. All three of the films that won the most Oscars won 11 (and the two that had the biggest strike-outs also had 11 nominations), but I didn't realize that until *after* submitting.

Hmm. Could not name any places in the US named Clinton. I knew Cleveland OH wasn't named after Grover, so I figured that had to be it.

When I watch American Ninja Warrior, I usually FF through the contestant background stuff. Cuts the show from 2 hours to 1.

Took my first loss on the season after starting 6-0-5. Had no chance at the Moon Q, but I should have pulled Basho. Still would have lost, though, as my opponent got a 7(5) and he gave Moon a 3.

Re: $0 FJ Wager Poll

Here's a game where someone had $1 going into FJ! after missing a DD (and gave a funny response!). Funny stuff. Makes me wonder how many viewers or even boardies get the reference to the Superman imp, Mxyzptlk. Alex obviously didn't. I had forgotten all about that plot trope. That comic jumped the ...

Ouch on that second DD in the second round. I knew that one cold (I have listened to that soundtrack more times than I can count) but I can see it being impenetrable if you weren't familiar. Obviously Colby knew the right person in FJ but picked his second term (when he ran for re-election) rather t...

I had to look this up since I've never heard it the way Ken pronounced it. His real first name was Tiziano, pronounced Tit-zha-no, so you could make an argument for Ken's pronunciation. There was a link to Ken's twitter feed on FB. On there he stated that he did it that way, just like E. Buzz Mille...

Barring an unforeseen collapse by Team Ken, we're looking at yet another title match involving J!'s resident multi-millionaires. Must be nice to get a call from TPTB every few years to the effect of, "hey, can you come back to Culver City so we can hand you another small fortune?" Yeah, it must be ...

Re: Tuesday, February 26, 2019 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

First blush answer was the same as Julia, but I realized that a) "Buonarotti" has no obvious connection to a river, and b) the river was flowing in the exact wrong direction for an Italian. There aren't a ton of well-known painters referred to by their first names, and after a few seconds of thinkin...

Top-line Oscar results: Green Book wins for Best Picture, Best Supporting Actor (Mahershala Ali), and Best Original Screenplay. The film is about African-American pianist Don Shirley (Ali) being driven on a 1961 tour of the deep South by an Italian man from the Bronx (Tony Vallelonga aka Tony Lip, p...

I knew it was the lady Maureen Stapleton played in "Reds", but I could not for the life of me remember her name. Put this in LL and let me stew on it for a while and I would probably have come up with it.

Any reason I should know those films at $200 are Italian? I guessed India for a country known for lots of award-winning films. Number of Best Foreign Language Oscars for India: 0 (3 nominations all-time) This was kind of famous when it happened: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8cTR6fk8frs But witho...

First national park in Indiana: Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore

No one used Indiana in Morbeedo's TD387 Q #9
To be clearer, Indiana Dunes already existed as a National Lakeshore, but it was recently upgraded to National Park status.
