Re: 2019 ToC Predictions & Comments

Are the QF match-ups randomly selected or do they have a seeding/placement system? I would have put Alan Dunn higher than bronze. I think James should be a platinum. James doesn't have a lock because there are a lot of strong competitors but he should be the heavy favorite. Are tickets for the tapi...

Re: 2019 ToC Predictions & Comments

Could you explain the "Position" column please? Position going into the FJ! round. 1 is 1st place, 2 is 2nd place and 3 is, wait for it...3rd place. L is for lock, a runaway. As you can see James had a lot of those. I think there's an extra position for Emma in your sheet. She should be 1+L+1+2.

The 8/15 NYT crossword puzzle Shouldn't it say 8/14 because the day only just started. (In Eastern Standard Time.) The NYT puzzles are released sometime around 10 pm EST the night before (6pm on Sunday I think - haven't been subscribed for awhile). 6pm on Saturday and Sunday (i.e. Sun/Mon puzzles),...

It also depends on how you define a decade.

0-9, 1-0, or any 10-year span. (Such matters got ToCer Bob Mesko re-invited after a bad FJ in his first game.)

Re: Sony and YouTube get sensible

Hmm. I had a very different experience concerning Jeopardy content and YouTube. Not only did they nuke the YouTube account that I had created just to upload things, they also nuked my personal account that I used to subscribe to channels and comment because it was "associated with" the other account.

Re: Fun with GSN's "Best Ever Trivia Show" [Spoilers]

Apparently Tzolkin is another name for the MAYAN calendar, which is what I thought before the choices came up. Now why didn't they put in Mayan as the answer choice. Could it be because the writers wanted to have a hysterical universal miss? Even Raj went wrong on this question. :? why mention him?...

Re: Thursday, July 25, 2019 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

What was crap was the review - “the best & worst tendencies of L.A.-situated rock” & was an “unflattering portrait of the milieu”. Did they like it or hate it? Is it the group or the music they are bashing or loving? It became fashionable to hate the Eagles much later, but I'm sure there were early...

Re: 2019 Current Events Study Guide

Entertainment Weekly will now be a monthly magazine. :( My subscription expiration has gone from April 2022 to March 2025. And yet, it will retain 'Weekly" in its name. (The first monthly issue was actually the previous one, but it came so soon on the heels of the final weekly issue that it seemed ...

Re: 2019 Current Events Study Guide

Former Supreme Court Justice John Paul Stevens died at age 99. Stevens served on the high court from 1975 until 2010, the third-longest tenure (behind Stephen J Field (1863-1897, 3 days longer) and William O Douglas (1939-1975); Stevens took Douglas' place on the Court). Stevens retired at age 90; o...

For people who have done the LLRC before, is there any choice in which proctor each contestant gets assigned? I feel that due to my flag, that people from Michigan or who went to Michigan might pull some unfair tricks on me, and than since Thorsten went to Notre Dame, he might assign me a Michigan ...

Re: 2019 Current Events Study Guide

Author and MLB pitcher Jim Bouton died at age 80. His book Ball Four depicted a look inside the culture of Major League Baseball in 1969, which was, according to the book, much like the rest of the country at the time: full of sex, drugs, and alcohol. Bouton is also responsible for the creation of B...

Re: 2019 TOC Updates

And the reason why Ryan Bilger was not put in this Tournament of Champions is probably because there already is a Ryan competing and they thought it was easier to not have a complication. This is nonsense. I mean, who can forget the 2008 Teen Tourney with the two Rachels (Horn and Cooke)? They kept...

I learned Every good boy does fine" from my piano teacher (bass clef analog: face) several hundred years ago. Amazing what sticks in the brain. Was that the bass clef for people with only four fingers on their left hand? Not everything sticks in the brain, I guess. Every Good Boy Does Fine (treble)...

Curious if the contestants were given any instructions re. the last category in the J! round.... Why would the album covers category have required special instructions? The Google / Netflix question was correct as asked, but a little sneaky since the domain name was registered in September 1997 but didn't incorporate until September 1998.

Re: Trivia about Trivia: Obscure Record Holders

I recall that there was a clue in the UToC semifinal that referred to Eric Rudolph pleading guilty to the Olympic bombing on April 13 2005 (which I think was the day before the episode taped) and it aired May 19 of that year.

My worst finish was back in LL66, back in A Pac. Looking back at that season, lord what a murderer's row in that rundle. GoodeM, FrielP, BawdonG, LachD, MuellerP, LiptonM, RutterB, HerderS, VillaniA, JordanG, PenroseB, ChristyN, GaliherC, BasinK, HautA... jeez.
