Re: Monday, September 16, 2019 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

Although "patriarch" tried to lead me towards Papa Hemingway, I knew 1901 was too early for him. Went with Kipling instead. I was never going anywhere near Tolstoy.

Re: LL82: LearnedLeague

Another freshman mistake on the Variety show. It was fill in the blanks with: article "the" , blank, preposition "of", blank, and QUESTION MARK. I took the punctuation to be part of the title. It kind of didn't look italicized, but I couldn't be sure. The "?" sent me astray on guessing word pairs. ...

Re: LL82: LearnedLeague

My opponent & I appropriately zeroed each other on Sister, Sister . Where I won the match was getting Foley for 3 points. My vague recollection is learning the name from the Lisa Whelchel era of The New Mickey Mouse Club visiting the Disney guy and seeing stuff such as coconuts for horse trots. pss...

My guess was "ton or none" based on the "large amount" hint in the question.

Re: LL82: LearnedLeague

I waffled between TI and Motorola (which I had mistakenly thought was also a Texas company; they were actually founded in Illinois). Not that it would have mattered - I would have lost on defense, as has been the case quite often this season. Two seasons ago I had 11 UfPA the whole season and this y...

Re: LL82: LearnedLeague

I was one of the 36% who confidently answered The Lion King for highest-grossing G-rated movie. Now I really want to know what that movie did to earn a PG. "[F]or sequences of violence and peril, and some thematic elements." I think all of the "live-action" Disney remakes recently have been rated PG.

I mean, if you want to start the season with the hardest FJ and get easier from there, I guess that's a way to go...

You could have given me a year and I would never have come up with that. Not a flicker of recognition on hearing the right answer.

The Testaments , Canadian author Margaret Atwood's sequel to The Handmaid's Tale (1986), has been shortlisted for the 2019 Booker Prize. Also shortlisted is Quichotte , Salman Rushdie's reimagining of Don Quixote . His second novel, Midnight's Children (1981), won the Booker Prize in 1981 Rushdie w...

Re: LL82: LearnedLeague

You can sometimes get away with answering a 1DS at like 1pm (ET).

As a note: even though mini-league championships are structured like 1DSs, they are NOT on that "noon the next day" schedule. (Not that I, um, speak from experience...)

Re: LL82: LearnedLeague

Yes, you can talk about day 2 once day 3 is live. But there is no discussion, no matter how circumspect, of the questions or your performance on them while that day is still live.

I horribly mangled the spelling of it as sadhyagrata, but the Commish was benevolent in accepting it anyway.

I got assigned a 2 for the Arnold/Willis question? Whatcha talkin' 'bout with that kind of defense?
I got assigned a 0 (correctly, theoretically) for that one but missed it to end up with the dreaded 9(5). For some reason my brain latched onto the Hardy Boys and never let go of that notion.

For the record, 5-a has always said that he was never "Hootie". That was a nickname of a friend of his in college that was borrowed for the band's name.

Re: 2019 ToC Predictions & Comments

Are the QF match-ups randomly selected or do they have a seeding/placement system? I would have put Alan Dunn higher than bronze. I think James should be a platinum. James doesn't have a lock because there are a lot of strong competitors but he should be the heavy favorite. Are tickets for the tapi...

Re: 2019 ToC Predictions & Comments

Could you explain the "Position" column please? Position going into the FJ! round. 1 is 1st place, 2 is 2nd place and 3 is, wait for it...3rd place. L is for lock, a runaway. As you can see James had a lot of those. I think there's an extra position for Emma in your sheet. She should be 1+L+1+2.

The 8/15 NYT crossword puzzle Shouldn't it say 8/14 because the day only just started. (In Eastern Standard Time.) The NYT puzzles are released sometime around 10 pm EST the night before (6pm on Sunday I think - haven't been subscribed for awhile). 6pm on Saturday and Sunday (i.e. Sun/Mon puzzles),...

Re: Fun with GSN's "Best Ever Trivia Show" [Spoilers]

It also depends on how you define a decade.

0-9, 1-0, or any 10-year span. (Such matters got ToCer Bob Mesko re-invited after a bad FJ in his first game.)

Re: Sony and YouTube get sensible

Hmm. I had a very different experience concerning Jeopardy content and YouTube. Not only did they nuke the YouTube account that I had created just to upload things, they also nuked my personal account that I used to subscribe to channels and comment because it was "associated with" the other account.
