Re: The Tournament of Champions in the Art Fleming era of Jeopardy!

Thanks for these! New article found on Jane Gschwend. The article notes she spoiled the outcome (she was the winner of Fleming show #2000) and then said nobody had told her not to. I guess there were no NDAs back then. Susan Smith of the 1971 TOC... The article says she qualified in October 1971 for...

Re: Tuesday, November 12, 2019 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

I found this FJ pretty straightforward and don't understand the criticisms. The fastest-growing region by far is the Southwest... But, again, the category indicated the issue was one about demographics, not population. So the question is not whether a region is benefiting from emigration writ large...

The Archive was written entirely in emacs and I still use it for most small edits although I've largely switched over to VS Code. I wish its emacs-like indent formatter extension worked better. Emacs had the best indent function.

Re: Tuesday, November 12, 2019 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

The Bible Belt has little to do with economics while both the Sun and Rust Belts do with their opposite economic status, workers vs. retirees. I agree "Bible Belt" has a greater cultural than economic connotation but on the other hand it's also just a shorthand for the geographic area corresponding...

Re: Tuesday, November 12, 2019 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

Except the clue was not just about population, it was about demographics, and, in fact, the article says nothing about retirees, it's more about the flight of educated Millenials. I live in the Rust Belt and I've known as many, no, more friends that moved South than West.

Not a fan of this clue. Feels arbitrary.
Ditto. There's probably a way to figure out they wanted Sun instead of Bible (retirees? educated nest-leavers?), but James couldn't figure it out in time, and I couldn't, either.

Smetana, the subject of the hardest clue according to this poll, isn't totally obscure, with dozens of Archive name-...

Re: TOC semifinal matchups are up

Based on Coryats it looks like Emma got fed the hardest semifinal matchup, not the easiest, like some were saying she would be. (Short of being matched against one of the other two Coryat leaders, James and Francois.)

Re: J! Pangram

Can't tell how old this is but based on Google it's at least 11 years. Wikipedia might have been helped but they deleted their article with a list of pangrams. WIth 44 letters, it's not the most efficient pangram, but it's at least less than 26*2.

At old ball stadiums, an organ, more likely, but I think most of the newer ball stadiums got rid of their organ systems and now it's just somebody pressing a sample button.

Still not a bugle call, necessarily, although I don't see why it couldn't be played on a bugle.

If you spotted me Marian Anderson I probably could have told you she was an African-American singer and civil rights figure (somehow) but I didn't know the specific story about the Lincoln Memorial until this FJ!

Probably not wrong to expect to see James in the third semifinal. Seems likely they'll put him into the Wednesday slot for whatever reason they put him into the Wednesday slot for the QFs. Perhaps Wednesdays are their biggest viewership nights (although I would have thought it would be Thursdays).

Is Alan called "John" in the FJ! spoiler?

Any guesses as to who he meant by "one who sang at the L.M."?
