Re: 2019 Current Events Study Guide

In a news cycle that is pretty much "Secondly" at this point, any mention of a publishing timespan in a periodical name seems somewhat anachronistic... as does paper publishing itself. I give them about another two years until they go the way of... wait, I'm thinking of a good category theme for the...

You might have to battle Keith Williams over claim to that one.

Re: 2019 TOC Updates

I was surprised when they put up the tracker in the first place; I always assumed that they had never had one in the past (a) because it requires costly human-power to keep updated and (b) it would make a liar of itself the moment the producers decided to do something unorthodox or some external eve...

Re: Thursday, July 18, 2019 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

Bah, I knew it was one of those Nazis who escaped to Argentina but went with Mengele. The interesting thing about Mengele (from a trivia perspective) is that he was never captured (after being released in the immediate postwar period by U.S. forces unaware of his significance). At at few different ...

Re: New old games in the J! Archive

I had to look it up and I was surprised. The only answer that would've been better: Doc Golightly, the Ebsen character from Breakfast at Tiffany's.

Re: Wagering Suggestions factoring in 3rd? (J-Archive)

The Archive's "algorithm" (a big tree of IF statements) was constructed ad hoc as new wagering scenarios were identified, so it's far from flawless. One day I'll re-write it from scratch to be more generalized, but that day has not yet come. For whatever reason, the wagering logic considers that in ...

Re: 2019 TOC Updates

No one has yet cogently explained why any "ethics" arguments are not moot. I suppose the best argument that can be made is that the bumped future contender will in turn be bumping a hopeful, but the removal starts to make the would-have-been guarantee tenuous. One extra Teachers Tournament or Colleg...

Re: Wild result after FJ (old game)

Since Fran had the higher score by both the "end of J! Round" method and the "rewind the game clue-by-clue method", her 2nd place award is unambiguous. As discussed in this thread , it gets trickier when the awarding of the consolation prizes would be different by different methods, and the last tim...

Re: 2019 TOC Updates

FWIW I don't think there is "meanness" involved in suggesting there are some unwritten ethical rules to accepting "unearned" invites ("unearned" by the historical standards). However, as anyone who reads this thread can grasp, any such criticism is simply not applicable in the present instance, beca...

Re: 2019 TOC Updates

Is there a high chance they'd pair James and Emma in the same QF to make sure the rematch does in fact happen? There's no guarantee if they wait for a later round. Always a chance, but I'm going to predict we'll see Emma in QF1 (whether that's a Monday or a Wednesday) and that we'll see James in th...

I was surprised to be reminded how soon after the M$M the BotD was held (less than three years).
I think you mean the UToC (2005) and not the BotD (2014).

Re: Season 36 Changes & Predictions

For reference I compiled a "long list" (more inclusive) and a "short list" (limited to invitations of only U.S. regular play winners) of special invitational events. Dividing the number of years elapsed since the first special tournament ( Super Jeopardy! in 1990) by the number of events on the shor...

Re: 2019 TOC Updates

Is this the earliest we've ever learned of the ToC field? I think in most years we don't officially hear about the field until very close to the airdates.

While feeling bad for whoever got bumped, thrilled that we'll get to see Emma back behind the lecterns.

My memory is jogged sufficiently that I am totally sure I did the screencap of him at the same time I did Charles Kaufman and I must have been working from a tape of the show, which I am not sure how I had.
