Re: J! in the Media

Ken Jennings profiled on CBS Sunday Morning:

This profile was whittled down to a few soundbites with very little new to J! fans. Would have liked to have heard the raw unedited interviews, probably a couple hours of content.

Re: Friday, March 15, 2024 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

After this game, the Final get percentages are:

Yogesh - 67% ToC, 70% overall
Troy - 50% ToC, 62% overall
Ben - 67% ToC, 75% overall

I presume once one's Final get percentage slips beneath some threshold, one should be betting more to chance the game on a tiebreaker than on Final, no?

Re: Friday, March 15, 2024 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

Maybe this sort of thing happens almost every episode, but I spotted it on a first watch and have gone back to look again, and it's pretty jarring to see Yogesh's stance change, though Troy and Ben don't move much. I noticed it too. I don't think it happens very often on the show, not this dramatic...

Re: Friday, March 15, 2024 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

Can anyone figure out what he was going for? Anticipating a 3-way tiebreaker? Maybe he could predict Troy would bet the extra dollar and thus thought he had no chance of winning if Troy got Final right? That's the most charitable assumption and perhaps the right one. If he gets Final wrong with the...

The Archive automatically generates the content. Brian rigged it up so that JBoard would pull the automatically generated content. It's the latter part I'm not sure how to do.

Re: Season 40 Preemptions

Alas, the March 14, 2024 ToC QF3 DJ! and FJ! have been preempted in Cleveland by tornado warning coverage.

As of 9:09 PM Eastern, the preemption coverage is still going. I'm headed to bed.

WORLD OF LIT $1600 taught me something I find highly interesting and didn't know, not having read Hesse. Def going to pick up The Glass Bead Game from the library now.

Writer Bill Oakley on Twitter responds, "odd that the captioners never looked at the actual script!" Do captioners generally have access to scripts? (paging trainman?)

To me, the Oakley authority is enough to insert an erratum, which I have done.

Re: Wednesday, March 13, 2024 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

Just finished watching the game. Landing DD3 as an $800 clue in an OFFICIAL STATE STUFF category in a ToC game is a dream come true. One couldn't hope for a more fortunate situation. CPAP, continuous positive airway pressure. It's the machine that treats sleep apnea by preventing one from snoring ex...

Re: Tuesday, March 12, 2024 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

I know the show discouraged shout-outs during James Holzhauer's run, but IIRC, there were a few shout-outs that slipped in. A 14-year-old Facebook thread in my Memories today confirmed my memory that we were instructed "no shout-outs in Final" even pre-James in 2009. This game had quite a...

Re: 2023 RIP thread

Sad news reaches JBoard inexcusably tardy sometimes, but I just learned (by Googling, after our illustrious host noticed the absence since Christmas) of the death of our own beloved AFRET CMS , Season 33 2-time champion Kevin Shrum, who, thanks to his contribution, was listed at the top of this site...

Re: Tuesday, March 12, 2024 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

I'll be checking the "I've never seen [the correct response]" box but I got this one from little more than the single throwaway joke in Anyone Can Whistle (and the handful of references on J! over the years). Was it Kevin Marshall who used to say everything you needed to know for J! you co...

Re: Monday, March 11, 2024 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

I too was disappointed that Brian wasn’t more savvy about DD3. It wasn't at first clear to me that Brian getting DD3 could have changed the outcome in his favor, but it turns on whether he would have spent his time thinking of the correct Final response instead of writing down his parting shout-out...

Re: Monday, March 11, 2024 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

Luigi's wager was fine. Troy had a crush, not 2/3rds, and there's no prize for second place (better than third). This wasn't an Ike situation. Edit: hah, Woof's post edited. Been there! Up until Troy nailed DD2 I thought his goose was surely cooked. Then I was surprised Brian didn't make the obvious...
