Re: Friday, April 3, 2020 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

Another thing, for the record: The story above about Fiorello La Guardia is entirely made up. I find no evidence that La Guardia ever was a reporter, and in 1898 16-year-old La Guardia was living with his family in Europe. He didn't return to the US until 1906. Alb and Sask, and I just drew a blank on the identifiable Hemingway title...Almost blanked on Pulitzer, but it clicked with just enough time to scrawl...
NHO Maren Morris, that I recall...(But uh-oh, she was in another clue in 2019... )

Re: Friday, April 3, 2020 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

Altogether I have to say this was a weak game and a poor field of contestants. The middle man snatched defeat from the jaws of victory. His performance on the 2 Daily Doubles was thoroughly unimpressive. We look forward to your impressive performance that we can all laud. (Seriously; keep in mind t...

As a Missourian, I'm all about Mr. Clemens :). But the highbrows and mucky-mucks that decide what is "Classic" may not care to elevate a humorist and iconoclast. "Classic" for J! is what endures, making room for Conan Doyle and, say, Bram Stoker. But if you're talking about literary reputation, the...

Re: Wednesday, April 1, 2020 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

When they had Glenn Close recording clues, too bad they didn't have her record today's theater DD. She starred in that production as St. Joan's mom. Even though the choices are few, I started scrawling late and found Saskatchewan pretty unnerving to write quickly but legibly, so I fretted over wheth...

US State + named after an English county = only one choice as far as I know.

Pretty straightforward once you ignore the coastline part of the clue.
If I'd ignored the coastline part I wouldn't have got it. I admit I forgot the -shire that comes after York... :)

Re: Monday, March 30, 2020 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

I got the BMS for "clover" to "shamrock", but I'm still a little unclear as to why it mattered. "Four-leaf clover" is a clear neg because of "trifolate", but if she corrected herself in time to "clover", I didn't quite get the reason for the distinction. I guess all shamrocks are clovers, but not a...

Re: Reretaken Down

With no sports to watch I often keep my TV still on KGO after J! instead of immediately changing the channel. Instead of WoF coming on it was David Muir with ABC news again. Not a special break-in, but a replay of the earlier national broadcast. Wheel has been bumped to the middle of the night this...

Golf will like having a GOLF category and I enjoyed the sweep even though the valuations seemed a little scrambled. I would have ordered them: $200 Eagle $400 Wedge $600 St. Andrews $800 U.S. and British $1000 Croquet ------------------------- Did not think any of these five were complete gimmes, y...

Alex: No, Sacremento is the state (with the church).

Just to be clear about who was making the mistakes in the game, Alex didn't say this. He correctly identified the state.

Like many, I flipped the FJ coin back and forth over and over and came down on the wrong side...

Had MTA for Police Squad $800 — judges? Nope. The MTA runs the buses and subway. They don't have a police unit (which is basically why Adam was negged. If he had just said the Transit Police, which is part of the NYPD, he'd have been fine.). Actually the MTA does have a police force, but its jurisd...

Since the contestants were pointed toward WOMEN AUTHORS , am I wrong to think answering with a politician (or any other public figure that is not primarily known as a writer) is a deviation from/misinterpretation of the category? Re: Friday, March 20, 2020 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

More eyebrow-raising to me was Michonne successfully altering two of her responses, changing "Eurorail" to "Eurail Pass" when Alex asked her to say it again, and "roll vote" to "roll call" when Alex hesitated. I know it's fair game to take another stab if Alex hasn't ruled against you, but with the...
