Re: Thursday, September 20, 2018 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

Spiritual == Buddha. To my knowledge, Confucius isn't considered folklore. He is best known as a Philosopher. If he was said to have done what the Buddha did, unless perhaps it was canonical through some scripture, it would be folklore...but I agree with others that it's unlikely a story about Jesu...

Re: Wednesday, September 19, 2018 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

Can someone name a "famous...speech" given by Paul Revere? Or really, any other famous speech associated with the early revolutionary period? I'm not coming up with one offhand...So yes, this was a little tricky since the speech was delivered in Virginia by a Virginian...but I couldn't come up with...

Re: FJ!s for the 9/10/18 week

   :(    Pretty good way to start the season! I thought the movie being referenced Thurs was King's Row , but since I couldn't remember that name or even that it referenced the small-town setting (which probably would have warned me awa...

Re: Friday, September 14, 2018 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

The FJ name struck me as Scandinavian, so I wrote down ice hockey . That held for a few seconds, then the significance of Axel hit me...I crossed out hockey and wrote down skating ... With a few seconds left I realized that was inadequate and crossed out ice , scribbling in figure ...The judg...

Re: Thursday, September 13, 2018 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

Odd that Lauren got negged for restauranteur , quite properly, especially since it was specified in the clue (though Kyle's restauratoor wasn't perfect French, either)...and minutes later Kyle got away with enunciating the non-existent t in Cap'n Crunch for Contractions ...I suppose the clue could b...

Re: Wednesday, September 12, 2018 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

Since we don't nasalize, I'm not seeing how the added "e" definitively changes the pronunciation in English. Heroine, valentine, and gasoline are all variously pronounced. This seems as ticky tack as the "k-ru-soe" vs "kru-soe" talk yesterday. Even without nasalization, Guillotin's last syllable st...

Re: Wednesday, September 12, 2018 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

I got Guillotin without the E. :geek: I didn’t (I said Robespierre) but I dislike the “executive decision” to accept a response that is 100% wrong. Well, I guarantee that there would have been an uproar if they didn't take all 3 answers as being correct. I'd say that without the executive decision,...

Re: Tuesday, September 11, 2018 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

Was I the only one who heard "Robinson Caruso"? I kept expecting a reversal on that. That response was as primitive as can be. Posts like this are part of why I like to join in here each week. Agreed! But seriously, I wonder if the precedent would be used to justify accepting Ca-ruso ...Unfortunate...

Re: Tuesday, September 11, 2018 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

Becky's response left the u unvoiced - kind of like the u in guard. Or Antigua! They're usually more lenient with foreign names. Alex said the problem was not enough syllables. Then they turn around and take too many syllables on Crusoe... Me, I take both...

Re: Monday, September 10, 2018 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

I had a 3-step process on this FJ.

Not known for its waters...
Big country in the Southern Hemisphere known for its waters...Brazil!
Crude, but it worked...

   :( :( :( :( Like others, I blanked on the recent history, and struggled for someone more identified with NC... (Too bad neither his home state nor the lying in the Capitol were noted in the Current Events thread...) Not much luck on the extras..."Strain" occur...

Re: Friday, July 27, 2018 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

I thought this FJ was an excellent clue that made us put several elements together to get it. I did the math, added in a little bit of history and logic, got to the right war, right year, and.....missed it by THAT much!!! Wonder if they would have accepted just "Concord.?" ehhhhh, probably not. Dan...

Re: Friday, July 27, 2018 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

Reassuring to learn that Lexington and Concord would have been accepted. I didn't want an FJ fail to end the season (though my best streak of the season ended last night... ), and I was too unsure to stop at Lexington, I doubt I've ever heard them uncoupled. battlefields.org (The American Ba...

Re: Friday, July 27, 2018 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

Tough way to end a season with a clumsy clue syntax. I saw 1854, not the Civil War, then thought "battle that started a war - Fort Sumter!". I totally ignored my own filter. In general, I don't think of battles as being the "start" of a war - even though Pearl Harbor is an obvious exception. WW I s...

Re: Monday, July 23, 2018 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

I hadn't heard of the 1917 Silent Parade before, but, playing along at home, I should have been able to deduce NAACP from a "rights organization founded in 1909" (I think that was what the clue said). Dave clearly said "Christmas Attucks" for the last response of Double Jeopardy! I backed up and wa...

Re: Tuesday, July 24, 2018 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

As a former longtime mastiff owner and devotee of the breed, I agree that "mastiff" should not have received a BMS. To say a bullmastiff is a "type of mastiff," however true in some sense, plays fast and loose with the established names for breeds. (It's a little like arguing "dog" should have rece...
