Re: Wednesday, July 24, 2019 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

Am I the only one who doesn't see how Sendak fits a Picasso comparison at all ? Which Picasso work are you picturing? Re: FJs for the 7/22/19 week

Still waiting to find out if that review was positive or negative with it's ridiculous tony language. (Still would never get the answer) A Rolling Stone review of the Eagles in 1976? Going to be largely negative; RS was one of the biggest Eagles-hating music mags of the '70s. (As I said in the day'...

Re: Friday, July 26, 2019 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

I thought I got FJ until checking this board. I don't know now if I answered "Carpathia", or "Carpathian". I will check the Schrodinger box for this on the poll. I didn't like the clue phrasing which leads to Lusitania immediately and then requires parsing. I wonder if the contestants were hornswog...

Re: Thursday, July 25, 2019 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

I lived through the 70s, and sometimes listened to AOR stations and my college roommate's album collection, but I'm far from an expert. Maybe that was an advantage here, cause I thought this was obvious...70s, "L.A.," "unflattering portrait"...??

I had never heard of Carle, either. I've never heard of Carle either. I'm another who didn't know who Carle is Seriously? None of you remember the Eric Carle museum category earlier this season? Why wouldn't I be serious? Too bad the author has never made an impression on me. And I don't rem...

Re: Wednesday, July 24, 2019 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

Congrats, Nathan. Sorry to see Corin go, she seemed so cool and collected and made it look easy. It's such a conflict to root for a champ and therefore un-root for challengers :( . I thought the blood type question was cool - the writers continue to amaze with interesting tidbits. I don't get to cl...

Re: Wednesday, July 24, 2019 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

It didn't help that I got Roald Dahl's name in the head and couldn't unfreeze it to retrieve Sendak. Rolad Dahl could be a real distractor. He seems to almost fit somehow. But Dahl didn't illustrate his own books. I think it would make a good clue--maybe TOC level--to ask for the name of Dahl's ill...

Re: Wednesday, July 24, 2019 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

I'm another who didn't know who Carle is, though I've heard of his famous book, of course. Sendak's work isn't particularly reminiscent of Picasso, but no author/illustrator has a higher reputation - there's currently an exhibition of his theatrical designs at the Morgan Library in NY - so I thought...

Re: Monday, July 22, 2019 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

Prologue acceptable for epigraph? They didn't accept "foreword," so I don't see why they'd take "prologue," which is not commonly used with poems, and wouldn't likely consist of a "quotation," as the clue required. I'm proud of getting this FJ just from pondering the description in the clue...thoug...

      :( Judging only by this poll, quite a rise in difficulty in that last FJ of the week...I also guessed WA. Re: Thursday, July 18, 2019 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

I'm surprised I haven't seen any mentions of Nathan losing a tiebreaker on "Million Second Quiz" to eventual runner-up Brandon Saunders. That tiebreaker was Iowa's postal abbreviation. Nor any mentions of him on 500 Questions. I'm surprised you spoiled the outcome of this game in another thread, es...

Re: 2019 Current Events Study Guide

In a news cycle that is pretty much "Secondly" at this point, any mention of a publishing timespan in a periodical name seems somewhat anachronistic... as does paper publishing itself. I give them about another two years until they go the way of... wait, I'm thinking of a good category theme for th...

Add me to the NHOI club for FJ (and I can name some fairly obscure book awards) There's a big difference between never having heard of the Shirley Jackson Awards (I hadn't either, but it was immaterial to getting the clue)- https://www.shirleyjacksonawards.org/nominees/ and never having heard of Sh...

I thought that "The Lottery" was a much older story than that, so I guessed Edward Bulwer-Lytton for FJ.
category was women authors
Also, B-L died in 1873. On the plus side, he does have an "award" named after him-

If ever there was a DD crying out for the minimum $5 bet, the Lieder one had to be it. In classical music, Schubert is pavlov for lieder. You didn't really have to know the name of the song. I'm no aficionado - I don't know that I've ever listened to a Schubert lied - but I didn't find the category...
