Re: Thursday, September 24, 2020 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

Poll request on the Streep clue. I think "even LSV missed it" is a pretty good gauge of a clue's value being off base. I could smell this coming a mile away. Noted. She was the most famous actress in the category but it's definitely one of her less famous films, Oscar nomination notwithstanding. I'...

Re: Thursday, September 24, 2020 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

Not thrilled with the "pass the buck" clue. If you are "literally" passing the buck you're actually passing a poker dealer button/marker or (originally) a deer-horn knife! Not a dollar bill. A dollar bill is a buck. So if you give someone a Washington, you are literally passing a buck. I guess we'l...

Re: Friday, September 25, 2020 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

I was fine in the moment with accepting careen , but thinking about it, I'm not sure I would have overturned the ruling. Careen is to move fast and out-of-control. The clue was a dictionary definition of veer ("suddenly swerve"). A careening car may veer, but careen is a less specific word... Anothe...

Re: Friday, September 25, 2020 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

Douglas Ginsberg’s nomination for Pope failing due to revelations of drug use may be he worst (best?) wrong answer of all time. It's very important for your party to control the College of Cardinals, otherwise your Pope nominations are dead in the water. I'm assuming she read "up in smoke" in the c...

Re: Thursday, September 24, 2020 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

I missed the Rhine river question because the clue stated that it flowed into Lake Constance but in reality Lake Constance is the source and it flows into the North Sea. Lake Constance is not the source and the clue didn't say that the Rhine stops at Lake Constance. http://www.primaryhomeworkhelp.c...

There are 3 or 4 times as many hits in the archive for Rhine as for Rhône, so the former is a safer guess for the 2d slot... I don't think I've ever known exactly what a Pulsar is, unless it's a watch...This week is not going so well for me, FJ-wise... But, I have only a remote clue on colleg...

Re: Wednesday, September 23, 2020 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

Did anyone else hear Lisa pronounce Edward Murrow's name as "Morrow?" I was expecting a reversal for that. I thought I heard "Morrow" too. That’s what I heard too, but I’m sort of ok letting it go; it’s a pretty fine distinction. OTOH, maybe Alex should have asked her to repeat it. In my opinion, s...

Re: Tuesday, September 22, 2020 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

As previously mentioned, there being no India in 1833 makes relations with it difficult to have. The thing is, 1833 was a significant year in Indian history- Features of the Charter Act of 1833 The [East India Company's] commercial activities were closed down. It was made into an administrative bod...

Re: Tuesday, September 22, 2020 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

As far as the "India" response, I think 1833 is a reasonable attempt to pin the clue away from India. That's the year the US and Thailand established diplomatic relations - I don't know if 1833 has any significance in US/India relations. Plus, the book about India is about economics more than diplo...

Re: Tuesday, September 22, 2020 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

As for today's FJ, I like it. Elephants seem to go with a number of south Asian states, but who has such a long history of sovereignty? It's rough, I'll grant, on someone who read the wrong "Eagle and the Elephant" book. Well, if you read the other book, you'd presumably know that it didn't go back...

I said game room instead of parlor. Judges? Clue already had "games" in it, so I say no. Yeah, I don't think games were named for the game room...But parlor games were named for the parlor. I spaced on parlor, and blurted "drawing room." I dimly remember that ..... maybe Lestrade? Or someone in an ...

Did I miss something with allowing the Sirius XM Radio answer while not in the form of a question? After just saying "Sirius XM", she kinda mumbled, "Is it Sirius XM?" OK. I thought I heard her sort of stutter “Si-Sirius XM Radio” the second time. I believe there was a cut immediately after she sai...

There were two Jameses? Yep. Also two Judases but for some reason they didn't BMS Judas. It's strange that people don't seem to name their kids Judas lately.
