Re: Tuesday, October 15, 2019 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

Disappointed that I knee-jerked to Lansbury right over Bergman for the Gaslight clue :( Autumn Sonata was Bergman's last film and Gaslight was Lansbury's first! I wish I could say she's got a film coming up, but the last item on the 94-year-old's imdb page is from 2018...However, she just did a pub...

Re: Tuesday, October 15, 2019 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

Arguably, "there is no there there," which she wrote about Oakland, CA, her childhood home, is Stein's most famous quote. I'll bet a lot of people think Shakespeare wrote "Rose is a rose is a rose"...

Re: Monday, October 14, 2019 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

This was a game of some weird DD issues. Even though I got to the intended response, I still have no idea how to parse DD1. "... & will give you the name of a hunter"? What? DD2 was, unless I'm missing something, a pure YEKIOYD. Then there was Susan's wager on DD3, which caused Herm Edwards to star...

Re: Monday, October 14, 2019 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

I didn’t hear ‘verboden’ or ‘verbodem’, but I distinctly thought I heard ‘Carrie BRONstein‘ instead of ‘BROWNstein‘. Is that really close enough? That could be considered a matter of accent, though I know Erin is from Missouri, not Pittsburgh! Of course if it was spelled Braunstein it could be pron...

Re: "A Big Statistic" for $400 poll (10/14/19 spoiler)

Here's the most recent BLS statistics on workplace fatalities I can find that include a ranking https://www.bls.gov/iif/oshwc/cfoi/cfch0016.pdf (see slide 18) It looks like BLS classifies underwater welding under Commercial Diving and here's a CDC page on that occupation based on BLS statistics 2011...

Re: Monday, October 14, 2019 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

I thought Erin said "verbotem," like her mouth just wanted to say "verbatim" with a different middle vowel, then corrected herself after/while Alex ruled her correct. The T/D issue is a non-issue to me, as the English T frequently gets pronounced as a D in between vowels. Think Taylor Swift saying ...

Re: Monday, October 14, 2019 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

Another poorly worded clue (IMO), was the first round DD. "Gives them names of hunters" could have been interpreted as giving names to the (alligators). Plus, there are orginizations that capture the reptiles and relocate them. The clue reads- The state of Louisiana says these reptiles over 4' can ...

Re: Monday, October 14, 2019 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

I assume "dulcet" is a no-go on Speak Softly for $600? FWIW, I also said "dulcet" I also had "dulcet" A fourth for dulcet The problem is "reverently," which doesn't quite fit. But I think it's close enough. I'm not at all ashamed of my guess of Bill Bojangles Robinson (1878-1949) for "most famous m...

Re: Friday, October 11, 2019 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

To show off, especially in the main seating area of a sports venue "Grandstand" is given, but how about "showboat"? It doesn't quite match the "main seating area" TOM, but there's precedent for a clue where it's correct despite being against the TOM. (I'm guessing it also doesn't quite fit as a rhy...

Re: 2019 Current Events Study Guide

Robert Forster (died last week - also in Jackie Brown ) plays vacuum salesman Ed Galbraith I can't resist pointing out that Robert Forster made his film debut in 1967 in John Huston's Reflections in a Golden Eye , based on the Carson McCullers novel. In the film Forster is the erotic obsession of M...

Re: Wednesday, October 2, 2019 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

I'm not afraid to admit what I don't know: NHO Mengele. I paused on that clue and thought, "Should I know this??" I had to turn on subtitles to get the spelling. Overall, the WWII era is a real weak spot for me. A friend recommended "The Second World War" by Anthony Beevor, so I bought the book but...

Re: FJs for the 10/7/19 week

Ah yes, the other Carson McCullers novel. I should add that to the flashcards, but I've been remiss in reviewing them for the last week. I think it showed up in one of Ed Toutant's games, if I remember correctly. From the Literature Pavlovs thread: I'd add Carson McCullers to this list. Although (a...

FJ: should have thought of that. That's pretty much Jeopardy's favorite play to ask about. Said Neil Simon for lack of any better ideas. Rough FJ week for me... 1/5. Considering that "Paul Simon" was the correct response for a FJ clue earlier this week, it would've felt odd to have two FJ clues wit...

Re: Thursday, October 10, 2019 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

The FJ! clue was a fail for me in processing the clue. I wrote Northwest Passage and by the time I realized my error I went on two detours to Spanish Armada and Royal Navy leaving me no time to get back on track. I deserve a miss for letting that one get away. Yeah, I failed too, but thought the cl...

Re: Wednesday, October 9, 2019 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

It's worth mentioning that The Member of the Wedding became a Broadway play written by McCullers and then a very wonderful movie with Ethel Waters, Julie Harris (a 25-year-old playing a 12-year-old), and 9-year-old Brandon deWilde (also famous for Shane , and for dying young). Some of those archive ...

I knew this one cold from all the web sites that review the origins of Thanksgiving (they all mention it, with that exact "day of publicl..." quote; the modern annual national holiday didn't come into being until FDR) .
