Re: Friday, November 17, 2017 Game Recap and Discussion [SPOILERS]

Congrats to Buzzy on a stirring comeback. Yes, his DD clue was a gift at that dollar level, but he didn't know that would be the case when he made his gutsy wager. So the man that I underestimated throughout the tournament, who seems like a real mensch, wins it all. What a great game (and it broke m...

Re: Reversing the Acceptability of a Response [POSSIBLE 11/16 SPOILER]

Not in tournament play, but I have a memory of an early season 2 game where the correct FJ response involved the word capital or capitol, and the next day they brought in the second place player as champ, because between games they had decided the "winner" the day before had used the wrong spelling...

Re: Thursday, November 16, 2017 Game Recap and Discussion [SPOILERS]

Kind of late weighing in, but I enjoyed the game, it was great to see all 3 players having fun despite the high stakes, and I like that the outcome of the finals is still very much in doubt. And who would have thought that Austin would land on 2 DD's and yet be trailing after part 1 -- in part, beca...

I'd like to hope everyone remembered the sugar maple!
I might well not have gotten it if not for the timing. I was surprised that Thorsten classified it as as a science question rather than a language one, as it was the saccharum that led me to "sugar."

Re: Tuesday, November 14, 2017 Game Recap and Discussion [SPOILERS]

Congrats to Buzzy. He was really sharp on the buzzer and just very solid overall. Maybe his physical and mental training paid off. :) That's twice I've underestimated him in this tournament. And he might have to be favored in the finals, although Alan (if he advances after tomorrow's game) seems mos...

Re: The Official TPH Education Thread (POTENTIAL GAME DAY SPOILERS)

I'd say 30 for "magnet school". That'd still put it higher than Ziggy Marley. I'll take the over and not only that I'll raise you 25 and take over 55%. The clue was fine, it had a hint and it was in the right place for top box. Three champions did not know it or chose not to venture a guess. That's...

Re: Learned League 75 - MD1

:? Confession: I don't know 1920s folk music. Doesn't matter that they were from Virginia; I've never heard of the Carter s. That was a sit-and-stare. I don’t know 1920s folk music either (who does?), but I do know June Carter’s family was country music royalty already when she married Johnny Cash,...

Re: Monday, November 13, 2017 Game Recap and Discussion [SPOILERS]

Lily should have been in the lead going into FJ had she taken her time and found the correct words for her DD. Not that it would have mattered. Wasn't thrilled about Andrew's DJ DD wager in the bottom box. He started in row 3 and knew it, then didn't know row 4 before the DD. That should have been ...

Re: Monday, November 13, 2017 Game Recap and Discussion [SPOILERS]

In retrospect, referring to Van Buren as a Vice President when he also held the next spot up would be really weird in an FJ clue. That occurred to me too, but it was really the fact that he was Dutch that steered me away from V.B. after he was the first named that popped into my head. So then I sta...

Re: TOC 2017 Semifinals and Finals: Predictions and Discussion [SPOILERS]

I'll take my 2 finalist picks who are still around, Andrew and Jason, to win their semis, and Pranjal in the third match. These are some brutally tough matchups for all involved.

Re: 2017 ToC Quarter-Final Matches Revealed - Discussion

How is this for a wild idea? Have a play in game with three tourny winners, while the 14 top money winners go straight in. If you're implying that the Teachers Tournament winner should have to go through a play-in, frankly I find that offensive. Colby Burnett's TOC win should have put to rest any n...

Re: Thursday, November 9, 2017 Game Recap and Discussion [SPOILERS]

This TOC has been like March Madness. On any given night, most of the players in this exceptionally deep and balanced field can beat any of the others -- even, for the second night in a row, a 12-game winner. I had Seth going to the finals; I definitely didn't see tonight's result coming. Congrats t...

There was another clue in this show that was recently used in LearnedLeague. It was the one about "Come From Away." I can't remember now if the LL question was in the regular league or one of the recent mini leagues.
I think it was in the Aviation 1DS.

Re: Wednesday, November 8, 2017 Game Recap and Discussion [SPOILERS]

The DD that David missed was just nasty. Was it? I feel like sasquatch was easy pickins since bigfoot is only seven letters. Could be canadian bias tho, do americans not really use that term? No, "sasquatch" is well-known in the U.S. I could easily see someone jumping to "bigfoot" on a regular clue...

Re: Wednesday, November 8, 2017 Game Recap and Discussion [SPOILERS]

Just as I underestimated Buzzy for Monday's game, I underestimated Alan in handicapping this one. My excuse is that I didn't see his regular run. But he was pretty sensational today. I had expected that Austin's M.O. of finding and betting big on the DD's was likely to be less effective in the TOC, ...

Lesotho is my go-to for "landlocked country" because it's basically the only one I remember...and I resent this thread a little for adding Swaziland to the mix... :x
There are over 40 landlocked countries; the exact number depends on what you count as "countries."

Re: Tuesday, November 7, 2017 Game Recap and Discussion [SPOILERS]

The clue about the injuries by helicopter of Dr. Romano on ER was familiar to any lLama. :D That particular clue makes me think one of the Jeopardy! writers may be a Llama. I got FJ and it came down to a decision between whether Swaziland or Lesotho was farther south. I assumed all three players wo...

Re: Tuesday, November 7, 2017 Game Recap and Discussion [SPOILERS]

Jason was highly impressive. TBH, I wasn't surprised he had the sole solve on an FJ that I thought was quite a bit tougher than yesterday's. After all, his career Geography percentage in LL is .919 (!) Another fun and well-played game overall, but it belonged to Jason. I also liked his interview seg...

But I'm not expecting a "Teen Tournament" easy FJ! in a ToC.
Gotta agree with you on this.
Neither am I, but you have to go with the response that fits whatever FJ clue they give you.

And "''Teen Tournament' easy" is silly hyperbole.
