Assuming his buzz speed is the same across categories
That's a strong and probably unrealistic assumption. In my experience, buzzer speed is almost certainly affected by confidence.

1. The absolutely superhuman: He seems to know about 90% of J! material, and in an average game, he'd know 54 of the answers for an at-home Coryat of around 46000. That's not superhuman at all. I can't do that, but I can name at least 3 boardies for whom 54 correct would count as a below-average day.

Re: LL82: LearnedLeague

I was really surprised by the low get rate on Romanov I thought about this one a long time and I can't say Romanov was something that really crossed my mind. "Rurikids" just doesn't scream Russian to me at all. I ended up putting Pahlavi. I knew that one, but expected it to be hard and assigned 3 p...

Re: LL82: LearnedLeague

Only 35% recognize the Mercury Seven? I'm flabbergasted. Same here. And the weirder thing is that it had the lowest Avg D (1.0), which generally means that it was considered the easiest question. I assigned my opponent with an 88% get rate in American History a no-brainer "0", and she missed it. Di...

Re: Friday, September 13, 2019 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

I considered Hillary to be from Illinois, but when I had counted back to Reagan, I assumed I did something wrong. Put down 2004, just to have something. First miss of the season. Just as an FYI, the time before 2016 was 1944 (FDR and Dewey both from NY). And that’s exactly what I said, having inexp...

Let me be the first boardie not named TPH to say I have never, ever heard of Shirley Jackson in my life. This was the stand-and-stare of all stand-and-stares. Not even a glimmer of recognition at the reveal. It happens. Evidently.

Sadly, I second this.

I like the way Sam plays. Prospective contestants who are merely good and don't have uncanny Ken/Brad/James-like abilities can learn a lot from him.

On a negative note, we've had a lot of really bad FJ wagers by STEM professionals recently.

Re: JBoard Demographic Survey

When this poll was first posted, there were no respondents in the 70+ bracket. I am now over 70, and I would not be surprised if a few other boardies are, as well. I hope so, anyway. Being the oldest person in the room is not something I relish. It has been over five years so I would imagine you ar...

Hey all, Sam here! I want to congratulate Ryan and Margaret for a great game, based on all of our interactions I think that I was probably the third most knowledgeable person up there. My plan going in was to do whatever it takes to get the lead, by being quick but cautious on the buzzer, hunting f...

Hannah's FJ wager was giving up on any chance of victory. That's a move I can't ever understand.

It took me a few seconds to put the pieces together, but I got Leonidas without much difficulty. I don't understand all the guesses of mythical people when we were given a date of death in historical times. While Leonidas was an instaget for me, I understand he may be obscure to many. But yes, all ...

Debbie had such a perfect opportunity to wager twice the difference between her and EJ's score and give herself the best chance (and, given the responses, the win). The FJ clue would have been much easier if it had mentioned how many countries the region included, or that its name is Greek for "man...

Re: Friday, June 28, 2019 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

Overall tournament impressions: Writers/producers should have more confidence in teens and increase the difficulty of teen tournaments. The clues were too easy for these contestants and most games were pure buzzing contests. Such smart teens should wager better, though. By that, I mean throughout th...

I missed the Pocahontas clue because she didn't look Native American. Good thing Donald Trump is too dumb to watch Jeopardy! Re-imagining this as a Millionaire question with four choices, I'm not sure what I'd have gone with. a) The United Nations b) NATO c) The Geneva Convention d) The US Constitu...

As always, none of my attempts made the list, but, unlike the previous season, this time none of the entries I voted for made the top five. Obviously, my sense of humor is different not only from Thorsten's, but also from the typical LLama's. Of the five top BWAs, I only find Wu Tang Clan funny.

Re: Tuesday, June 25, 2019 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)Instaget

Instaget for me and surprised it was a TS. I thought the founding of Liberia was something studied in high school. I try to keep in mind that these are teens, maybe I hadn't learned that stuff yet at their age either, but that was a shocking TS. I also try not to go all wagering viking on the kiddi...
