Re: It's happening!!! The GOAT Tourney, w/ Brad + Ken + James

Well this will be fun! Who do I want to win? Ken Who do I think will win? James Same here but I'd add a final line: Who do I know will somehow win despite or even because of poor wagers combined with bizarre luck and a few inexplicable decisions by James and Ken? Brad I'm not sure I can watch this....

I thought of Sun Belt between the end of the music and the reveal. Had Bible Belt instead in the time allowed.

IF Japan had curbed its imperial ambitions (such as not attacking French and British territories), and IF they had not allied with Germany, and IF they had not attacked Pearl Harbor, would we have gone to war with them? I know they were concerned about our ability to disrupt their oil supplies, but...

Re: Friday, November 15, 2019 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

The Soviet Union did not declare war on Japan until August 9, 1945, which also happened to be the day the atomic bomb was dropped on Nagasaki. Which is why Japan can’t sign a treaty with the country it was at war with, since it no longer exists. Russia inherited the relevant legal attributes from t...

That's nothing short of incredible. I don't think there have been any naysayers of the sort you're thinking of for quite some ti...

It was a major reason for both the US dropping the nuclear bombs and Japan surrendering to the US so quickly.

Re: Friday, November 15, 2019 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

A peck of liquor? Not normal usage, but there's no reason a volume measure couldn't be applied to the volume of anything. A peck is specifically a unit of dry volume so I'm not sure it is right to say it can be used for anything liquid. At first I thought James got a raw deal on that clue but looki...

Re: Friday, November 15, 2019 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

"Liquor" BMSes to volume? Why not, and what else to do? It would be hard to justify deeming "liquor" wrong. Technically, a more helpful prompt would have been "be more general", but that would have given away too much. A peck of liquor? Not normal usage, but there's no reason a volume measure could...

I am curious how many people who got San Francisco knew the question was about the Federal Reserve and how many just guessed a city in the West.

It would have been a better question if the missing city had been Richmond or Cleveland.

Torricelli was not going to be pulled from the recesses of my brain. I knew Bernoulli wasn't likely to be right, but I had nothing else. 250 Quatloos on Francois to win it all. I imagine Francois reacted to seeing the FJ clue similarly (but more intensely, given the much greater stakes) to how I re...
