Sigh... Alex can't pronounce "Srebrenica" and the contestants apparently don't know that it happened. :(

Re: Tuesday, February 11, 2020 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

CC says "Walesa" which makes it difficult for the hearing impaired to follow the explanation for the reversal. Here's a replay for those who want to hear it again: https://youtu.be/8AZ-sX18K9Q When I was watching, her response sounded correct to me and I was quite upset at the reversal. But re-list...

Japan's coin could be made out of ANY lightweight metal. Saw no way to narrow that down whatsoever.
I'm imagining a coin made from Sodium or Potassium. That would be epic.

Re: GOAT Tournament Day 4 (1/14/20) Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

Kinda interesting that on DD2, Ken said it called for a more conservative strategy.... in the end, if he was aggressive and everything else played out the same way from that point forward, would he have been able to lock out James in FJ? I thought the same thing, but James needed just about $16,000...

I punted on the FJ, but if I'd tried to name ONE character it would have to be Iago or Yorick (and I don't know if Yorick is a character, and don't need to know lol).
Yorick was a skull with zero lines.
But he was a fellow of infinite jest!

I am not an expert myself, but my Greek teacher would have disagreed with the description of "tyrannos" as a king who usurped power illegitimately. He always insisted "tyrannos" was the most generic word for king or prince, as opposed to "basileus", which had certain specific meanings (the Persian ...

Re: GOAT Tournament Day 3 (1/9/20) Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

"21st century" being part of the clue was neither helpful nor unhelpful to me since I knew it anyways, but a rather interesting fact is that over half of the Best Director Oscars this century went to foreign born people. It's actually two-thirds, right? Of the Best Director awards for 2001 to 2018 ...

Re: GOAT Tournament Day 2 (1/8/20) Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

BTW, do we know for sure that the official rules treat the game 2 negatives the same way as game 1 negatives? I don't think it would have ever occurred to me to question this, but your answer is right in the very game this thread covers. Brad's -3600 was changed to 0 before FJ, and his 14,400 from ...

Re: GOAT Tournament Day 2 (1/8/20) Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

I guess the thing is that the negative score has never happened on the second day before and that's why it's never been an issue before. One max(X, 0) function later and we're in business. Kudos for fixing a bug promptly, but also, arguably, the bug had no practical significance in this case. The s...

History is not my strongest area, but sometimes I get some unexpected help from a pop culture source. The Napoleon/Madison connection instantly came to mind because I am a fan of the Bruce Campbell television series Jack of All Trades , in which Napoleon was played by the incomparable Verne Troyer....

Re: GOAT Tournament Day 3 (1/9/20) Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

Updated probabilities: under the "totally random outcome, evenly matched players" assumption, Ken is now a strong favorite to win the tournament (19/27, or about 70%), James is at 6/27 (22%), and Brad at 2/27 (a little over 7%). How credible is that assumption? I think for Ken and James, it seems v...

Re: GOAT Tournament Day 3 (1/9/20) Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

I think the most notable takeaway from the third match is that Ken has adopted James's (objectively correct) betting strategy with full success, while James has adopted Ken's risky buzzing with far less success. Now, I'm on record saying that James may have buzzed too conservatively in his regular r...

Re: GOAT Tournament Day 3 (1/9/20) Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

Looks like Brad will finally "lose to a human being" by the time this tournament is done. How many matches are there in total? I don't think there's any way to say he hasn't lost to a human being... three times. This is not like "losing" a leg of a 2-day or 3-day total-point match, especially when ...

Re: GOAT Tournament Day 3 (1/9/20) Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

James Madison as part of a FJ answer on day two and then the Democratic-Republicans on day three? Come on, writers, lets show a little more range! At the very least, it's hammered home that I really need to brush up on my political history. I matched Ken on the incorrect response to the former FJ. ...
