Re: Friday, April 3, 2020 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

For the Nobel nominated Italian playwright I guessed Umberto Eco. He didn't write any plays so not a good guess. Not to rub it in, but he was also 2 years old in 1934. I blanked on FJ. I knew I needed to think of a newspaper publisher with a foreign-sounding name, but I could only think of Hearst a...

Re: Thursday, April 2, 2020 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

I knew Franklin Pierce said "affirm" instead of "swear" for his oath of office, but I clammed on the "affirm" clue here because I didn't like the sound of "affirm to tell the truth." Once I reminded myself the FJ category was CLASSIC AMERICAN NOVELS and therefore swatted away my initial word associa...

Re: Wednesday, April 1, 2020 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

I fell for the "shoe bomber" negbait too. I won't claim my usual "not negbait" argument here, but I hesitated on saying Shoe Bomber because I thought I recalled him having an English name and not an Arabic one (it was Richard Reid, it turns out), and that hesitation gave me enough time to recall th...

Re: The Official TPH Education Thread (POTENTIAL GAME DAY SPOILERS)

I (for one) don't need to have the full phrase "at the forefront" to reflexively respond "the Magi" when given "Adoration of" in a J! clue. I might have to think for a moment if the clue were something like "Common title of paintings depicting the Three Wise Men encountering Jesus," but when they g...

Re: The Official TPH Education Thread (POTENTIAL GAME DAY SPOILERS)

Why don't you search J! Archive for "adoration" and see how many different trios the word is juxtaposed with? [edit: and no, the Medicis don't count, because Botticelli put more than three of them into his painting of that scene!] I HAVE heard of "Adoration of the Magi" but it didn't seem like some...

Re: The Official TPH Education Thread (POTENTIAL GAME DAY SPOILERS)

For a Wheel of Fortune champion, you're surprisingly inept at completing phrases. I shouldn't have to do THAT DEEP of a mental dig in the top box. Silver Spring is what, the 100,000th most populous city in Maryland? Probably not even in the top 100 of ways to complete "Silver ____". Your reasoning ...

Re: The Official TPH Education Thread (POTENTIAL GAME DAY SPOILERS)

Maybe I should have specified "heard the full phrase and understand what it refers to and know that it has frequently been portrayed in art." And if all these apply to you as well, then you really have no excuse and should stop attempting to make them. This is just Silver Spring, Maryland all over ...

Re: The Official TPH Education Thread (POTENTIAL GAME DAY SPOILERS)

"Adoration of" should be enough to cue "Magi" for those who have ever heard the full phrase, Which I have, but "adoration" just seemed way too wide-open for me to get a bead on. Could be any trio for all I know, and nothing in the clue even remotely points to a religious trio. Could have been the T...

Re: The Official TPH Education Thread (POTENTIAL GAME DAY SPOILERS)

Lots of things can be "adored", and nothing suggested a worshipful or spiritual bent for me. It just sounded like a YEKIOYD that was massively out of place in the top box. "Of" indicates the adorers, not the adoree. "Adoration of" should be enough to cue "Magi" for those who have ever heard the ful...

Lend-Lease was the only alliterative act I could name, so that was my response even though I didn't know whether it had anything to do with 1941.

Re: Friday, March 27, 2020 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

It's a chestnut that FDR was the first president to appear on television, so I figured he must be the trap response and went one president later. Come to think of it, this sort of thinking helped me get my third FJ right (which I needed to do to win). Basically I thought, "'Let us have peace' is so...

Re: Friday, March 27, 2020 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

It's a chestnut that FDR was the first president to appear on television, so I figured he must be the trap response and went one president later. $6,400 in Lach Trash means I win from the fourth podium. ORDINAL TERMS $200 named two women whose husbands were VPs before becoming presidents, so Second ...

Re: Thursday, March 26, 2020 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

4/4 on big clues. I think sheriff was neg-bait. A 7-letter word for someone in charge of public safety, like in the old west. At least it helped me learn the difference between Marshal and Marshall. I said sheriff too, but I realized in retrospect that it's not like sheriffs are largely a thing of ...

Alex gave the "One minute" announcement here, which was followed by 4 triple stumpers. Amanda's incorrect guess on SURREALISTS for $2000 at clue 28 cost her the lead, and as it turns out, the game.
And a very, very bad guess it was. I remember being stunned by it watching on rutube years ago.

Speaking of which, the people misspelling "Rorschach" in this thread seem to have forgotten the category he was in.

Lend-Lease was the only alliterative legislation I could come up with during the commercial. At a loss from the clue, that's all I could put forth. I'll take it! I surprised myself running FEMALE SUPERHEROES. Actually, now that I check, I see I ran five categories this game! In DJ I was only two clu...

Re: Tuesday, March 24, 2020 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

Rorschach seemed way too obscure for anyone else save for the comic nerds. I got him, and I've never read the comic books or seen the movie (or the TV show, which Volante's post made me aware of). I had a vague recollection that Watchmen had a character named "Rorschach" whose face (actually a mask...

In "CH" SQUARED $2,000, I responded "cherche la femme" instead of "cherchez" (so "shairsh" instead of "shair-shay"), but that should be fine since the imperative of chercher has a few conjugations, cherche being the one you'd use when speaking to someone you'd call tu , and the clue didn't pin it to...
