Re: Friday, January 18, 2019 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

I thought the souvenir clue was massive negbait for "memento". Not a lot of French words ending in O. But then again, there was another in this category, bistro , and in the game, hebdo ... Oh, I was going to mention, hebdo is short for hebdomodal , which is in fact an English word as well (meaning...

I added 5/9/88: http://www.j-archive.com/showgame.php?game_id=6091 to give the 1988 Seniors Tournament its first representation in the Archive Player pics of Jim Gaylord, Louise Reyburn Dice & Tom Wickham: https://farm2.staticflickr.com/1890/44093391792_bab7a364f9_n.jpg https://farm2.staticflickr.c...

Re: Friday, January 18, 2019 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

I thought the souvenir clue was massive negbait for "memento". Not a lot of French words ending in O. And I would know that why? If it had actually been French and the correct response, you would have complained that you considered it but rejected it because it didn't have a pile of silent consonan...

Ryan Seacrest was all I could come up with yesterday, although I was pretty sure American Idol was later than 2000. I also got stuck on the idea that the "syndicated talk show" was a radio show.

Re: LL79: For the LLamas

On the "What band has had all of its members inducted into the RnR hall of Fame without itself being inducted" question, I said CSNY and got credit. That question's use of "only" was ill-advised.

Re: Millionaire 2018-19 Season Discussion [SPOILERS]

I checked both Merriam-Webster and the OED, and both confirmed my thought that bimonthly can mean either twice a month OR every two months. I'm absolutely baffled that they would use that question. I reassured myself that the midpoint of January falls on the 16th. I know twice-monthly things don't ...

The pudu is a favorite of Jeopardy! alum Bob Harris.
Yeah, when she didn't immediately lock in A, I thought, "Too bad, she hasn't read Prisoner of Trebekistan."

Re: Tuesday, January 15, 2019 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

Was it just me, or did the show play an ever-so-slightly different musical cue at the point before Johnny read the promotional considerations, as Alex was walking over to the contestant lecterns? I thought it sounded different too, enough that I rewound my recording and played it again. A more conc...

Another nice, solid win for the champ. Congrats to Anneke! Now in the J! Players' HoF.
How so?

Re: Monday, January 14, 2019 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

Is "Connectiquette" the longest single word to ever appear in a category title? I would bet not. At best it's tied with TRANSPORTATION. The longest words to appear in a category name are probably TELECOMMUNICATIONS and INTERNATIONALITIES, with 18 letters each. Other lengthy portmanteaus that have b...

Re: Monday, January 14, 2019 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

Couldn't do "soledad" to "solitude" in Translation for $200. That whole category seemed extremely tough, since you had to YEKIOYD instead of going for cognates, since there WERE no cognates. Soledad is certainly a cognate for "solitude." (And Witwe for "widow.") "Birth of Venus" rings no bells for ...

Re: LL79: For the LLamas

I've been enjoying following the R&R ML thus far, as well. I feel I'd have done pretty well if I'd signed up. I did talk myself out of one correct answer I'm kicking myself for: "I remember Green Jello having that legal dispute... nah, no way Maynard was in that band..." It would have been funny if...

Re: J! players on ABC's Million Dollar Mind Game

Brad Rutter (and perhaps some other Jeopardy! players) 2003 ToCer Alan Bailey is probably the second most likely to be recognized from Jeopardy in that group. Third is Ethan Brosowsky, 1-time champ from 2008. (I probably wouldn't have recognized him without knowing him from pub quiz.) I don't belie...

Re: Friday, January 11, 2019 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

Sg, you’re reading a lot more into that than I intended. A bet of $3,001 from Jocelyn wins in all scenarios apart from one where Anneke gets it right and makes a non-zero bet. Since the leader makes the minimum shutout bet in an overwhelming majority of games, to me that is the prudent bet from sec...

Re: Friday, January 11, 2019 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

And yet another overwager by second costs them the win in a TS FJ. Totally. If Jocelyn had bet properly, say, $6,399 to keep Sarah locked out, she would have... lost anyway. Here are things that are happening: Sarah had less than half of Jocelyn's score, but she had exactly double the difference be...
