Re: Millionaire 2018-19 Season Discussion [SPOILERS]

Re: today's last questionShow
I decided to Google "zill" while Jamie was still deliberating, and I learned that the word comes from the Turkish word for cymbal, and I immediately thought of Zildjian, which is a cymbal manufacturer founded in what is now Turkey. I wish I had been able to think of that.

Re: What if they changed the tournament format so that the last-place finisher in the first day of the finals is elimina

If they instituted such a rule, we would never again have to hear Alex's inevitable line that quite often the person who finishes third on the first day of a two-day final ends up winning. anyone care to take the time to find out how many times this did happen? I did that a couple years ago and sub...

Re: Friday, November 16, 2018 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

Well, there was the Teen Tournament a few years ago where the second SF finished in a triple zero and they gave that spot in the finals to the highest scoring non-winner, which vastly disadvantaged the SF1 players, who didn't know they'd be playing for a wild card. Luckily all of the last three sem...

Re: Friday, November 16, 2018 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

Contestants are only sequestered for the quarterfinals. They watch the semis. Duh. Thanks for the dope slap. I'd think the last group has a slight edge, but I can't draw an example where it is unfair. Just different. Well, there was the Teen Tournament a few years ago where the second SF finished i...

I had three names of Achaemenid kings at my disposal: Cyrus, Darius, and Xerxes. Guess which one I chose.

This is the video for today's 11/16 episode with the contestant randomly selected to play again. The thumbnail is a spoiler for the person selected though not any question or answers. https://drive.google.com/open?id=1KL50H9fiDqWg3AA6NzYYE0wxeabF9Moj That's who I would have guessed was coming back....

That fj bet is the third instance of hubris in this tournament.

When have contestants blown a lock game with an unnecessary wager?
1. No it isn't
2. Never, as far as we know (assuming by "blown a lock game" you mean "lost a lock game")

Jack's last DD is one for Golf to talk about: he left $1,400 on the table, and would have been $200 off the lead for FJ if he'd gotten it.

Re: Millionaire 2018-19 Season Discussion [SPOILERS]

Well, that was good timing; pub quiz just had a question asking for the only two people to win two Nobel Prizes in the same category. I only had one, but it was one more than my team would have had if I hadn't watched Millionaire today. That was hilarious. Unfortunate, but hilarious. You don't get ...

Re: Should the Teen Tournament Winner Get a TOC Invite?

Andrew Westney was a Teen Tournament winner, and played in the 80s BOTD (in my match). He was fully competitive; granted, this was about 23 years after his Teen appearance. April McManus was also a Teen Tournament winner in 1991, and made it to the semi-finals of the TOC in 1992 (again, in my match...

Re: Millionaire 2018-19 Season Discussion [SPOILERS]

Well, that happened. A contestant used her +1, then her 50:50, and then the two did rock, paper, scissors to determine her final answer. (Incorrect, down to $5,000 from $10,000.)

Re: Tuesday, November 13, 2018 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

I did a Lord of the Flies–related project my senior year (2000-2001) (although I got away with not reading the book—my project was based on an early scene that I felt foreshadowed things that I understood happened later in the book).

Re: Tuesday, November 13, 2018 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

I think Venator also has a singular distinction in the show's history - the only player to win a tournament game and not advance (or in the case of a final, win the event). There was also Andy Richter, who was unable to continue in the Million Dollar Celebrity Invitational due to his participation ...

And those other challengers' names are:
Jim Newman
Denise Rechter
I shared the video with Jim, and he said the show never aired (at least first-run) in LA because of wildfire coverage; now they're calling the current fires the worst since 1993.

specified that the poet was female (and as far as I can tell they only ask about two female sonneteers). Who's the other one? Dickinson didn't write sonnets, so she's out. So... Christina Rossetti? She gets mentioned along with her brother in relation to sonnets in one clue. Edna St. Vincent Millay...

(13 + 14) x 15 = not even a WAG on my part either. I can't for the life of me see an easier way to do 27 x 15. (Full disclosure: I spun my wheels on this one, and think it was pretty tough to expect someone to do on their feet.) 27 = 30 - 3 30 x 15 = 450 3 x 15 = 45 450 - 45 = 405 I know a four-ste...

And it just happened to be in all three contestants' hammerhouse? It *was* the Teen Tournament, after all. I think a lot of J! material on literary topics is focused on stuff that used to be taught, but isn't so much anymore, and yet remains Stuff You Need to Know. It wasn't surprising that the kid...

Re: New old games in the J! Archive

I know one of the challengers in that game because he usually proctors the WQC in Los Angeles. So of course Alex gave his and Rachael's last names in the interviews, and not the other challenger's.
