Re: J! in the Media

This is a bit self-indulgent, but podcasts are part of "the media," so here it is. Local comedian Brent Weinbach, whom I became familiar with because of a video game music podcast, also does a podcast called "Pointed Questions" where he simply interviews people (alongside a "sidekick" who says a thi...

   :( :( :( :( Thought Libra, said "I think I like Sagittarius better," went Libra anyway. I thought of "camera," but I didn't feel like I'd ever heard "in camera" before, so I clammed. Nothing whatsoever on the other two clues. Sackbut sufficed; I wish I could h...

I thought she was going to complete the Hail Mary, but the wording on the English/Japan was brutal and Magi was a helluva WAG from thin air as she (mis)understood the clue.

Was there a way to "solve" this clue, or was it just something you had to know outright?
I think "lines (or strings)" was supposed to evoke fishing lines. But a simple change to "lines (i.e., strings)" might have cued it a little stronger.

For the Wednesday match, I recognized that the symbol on the bottom right of the image in the album covers question was two F's, and I thought of Franz Ferdinand and didn't think anymore. Whoops!

Re: LearnedLeague 77 - Official Thread

At first, Baldwin was the only name I recognized, and I was scared that there could have been another Baldwin company that made something other than pianos, and the names I didn't recognize were hiding something from me. But then I noticed I'd overlooked Bösendorfer and I didn't have to worry anymor...

It would have been funny if Diana had won $23,201 today. She did go for an overwager ending in 01 anyway.

I was distracted by Maine for a bit, and the only Maine-set thing for kids I could think of was Pete's Dragon, which isn't even a novel. But I kept racking my brain, and somehow pulled up the correct response for a farm-based children's classic novel from mid-century.

Couldn't think of anything for FJ! Six inches seemed too far apart for a trombone, and didn't seem right for a tuba either. I pondered if maybe an early saxophone was that big. I was still trying to grind this one out when the music ended, leaving me with nothing. HOW WAS THIS A TRIPLE GET?!? If on...

Tony Awards: The Band's Visit , about an Egyptian military band's accidental trip to a small Israeli village, wins 10 Tonys, including Best Musical, Best Actor (Tony Shalhoub) and Best Actress (Katrina Lenk). One of the songs in that musical is titled "Omar Sharif." Omar Sharif's real last name was...

I stuck with my first inclination of Webster, but I considered Dewey and Roget as well. (Roget I at least could rule out for possibly not being American, which turned out to be the case.)

Final Jeopardy! was a gimme...shocked how many people here missed it. In spite of Alex's mispronunciation of "reinha." (If not for that reinha, I would never have gotten it from the Hebrew or Finnish.)

Re: LearnedLeague 77 - Official Thread

I misunderstood the question with "adjective form" and "noun form" as alluding to two different words and asking for the latter. Eventually I came up with "infinitesimal" for the adjective, and then I tried to make it into a noun for my answer. I figured if a final A was good enough for the other ma...

Re: New old games in the J! Archive

I added S5 11/21/88: http://www.j-archive.com/showgame.php?game_id=6002 I thought DOUBLE LETTERS for $400 was a brilliant clue: pigments and light have two primary colors in common, and the ones that are in one category and not the other both have a double letter, so you better know which is which.

I misremembered the FJ category as MEDIEVAL MEDICINE during the commercial break, so when I saw the clue, I immediately thought, "Well, I would have thought that was ornithology, but that's not really medicine," and tried to turn the "ven-" word into something to do with vision, but ophthalmology di...

So, I passed Tanzanian ambassador's car today, and was thinking about how Tanzania was a portmanteau. Then I tried to think of any other countries whose name is a portmanteau and couldn't come up with any. Are there any others? Does Pakistan count? Its name is basically an acronym with a suffix.
