Re: Monday, September 24, 2018 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

My knowledge of the line of British royalty isn't great, but I do know the order from Victoria to the present (if not all the years), and it was easy to determine that the clue was simply looking for who took the throne after Victoria. I thought Buster Brown was pretty obscure for the second box in ...

versing "vs." is a preposition "versus," not a verb "verses." Wow. Don't play video games much do we now? Oh, sorry, I didn't realize you were talking about video games. Well, it's a term used in gaming. By kids and former kids who never learned that "A versus B" is not a complete sentence.

Re: I can’t be on J

Matt Bruce got as far as the green room, but knew Ken Jennings, who was still taping, and thus couldn't play, and then someone he knew started working on the show before he ever got his chance.

Condolences.

Well, doing so twice certainly would be.

Confucius on Thursday. I'm sorry I didn't learn Volstead Act from this LearnedLeague season, but in my defense the VA abbreviation distracted me since I more readily associate it with Veterans' Affairs.

I had no idea it's spelled turquoise in English, I always thought it was spelled turqoise like it is in French. Do you think they would've accepted turqoise?
They would have accepted it, but it's spelled the same in French and English (with a U after the Q).

Re: The Official TPH Education Thread (POTENTIAL GAME DAY SPOILERS)

Why should I think 24K = Asia? I'm pretty sure South America and Africa have high mountains too. 24 is just such an arbitrary cutoff. 24k is a height that no mountain outside Asia reaches, that's why. There are a ton of mountains in South America that are 22K. If your numerical search on mountains ...

Re: The Official TPH Education Thread (POTENTIAL GAME DAY SPOILERS)

There are literally no mountains over 22,841ft outside Asia. Because everyone can size a mountain to the ones place, right? Round it up to 23,000 then. Still. That's hardly a standout number. Everest could be 23K. Mount Arvon could be 23K. The Eiffel Tower could be 23K. Asia is literally the only p...

Re: Millionaire 2018-19 Season Discussion [SPOILERS]

Ellen and Nick on today's episode were on my tape date. I hope they do well. Ellen did something I've never seen a Millionaire contestant do before. She got to the $20,000 question with two lifelines. It asked was what the bird Merops apiaster ate, as indicated in its name. (I don't remember the ch...

I was disappointed to see the last two round 1 clues unrevealed. I wondered whether the "yu" category would give a tip of the baseball cap to Yu Darvish.
It seemed to be a foreign travel category. Maybe yurts would have figured into it.

"Night of broken glass" joins the "NHOI in the top box" pile. That whole category was entirely alien to me. Re: LearnedLeague 78 - Official Thread

I'm friends with my opponent from yesterday on Facebook, so I knew he was a booze connoisseur (he's been "brand ambassador" for two businesses with "spirits" in their name, and another job title on his profile is "drinks writer"), and that he's currently traveling through Italy, so I gave him 0 for ...
