Re: '80s Music category 11/16/17 [Spoilers]

I precalled Air Supply, but "All Out of Love" is the only song of theirs I would recognize by the lyrics. I got everything between them and Nelson/Iglesias; I don't have any of the songs in my own collection.

Re: Learned League 75 - Official Thread

I'm curious whether anyone answered "berries" to today's pop music question. I could only figure out Strawberry Alarm Clock and The Cranberries, and decided less specific was the way to go. It would seem "berries" would have to be unacceptable, not because of Bananarama, but because of Buckcherry.

Re: Friday, November 17, 2017 Game Recap and Discussion [SPOILERS]

Back to the reality: Is Buzzy's total of 24,299 one of the lowest 2 day totals to win any tournament? As far as ToCs go, Vijay Balse won with $23,000, and Celeste DiNucci won with $22,000. Pre-doubling ToCs saw Robin Carroll win with $8,000. So if we double old ToC finals, Buzzy's finish is fourth-...

Re: Friday, November 17, 2017 Game Recap and Discussion [SPOILERS]

Vermontpelier is something I've previously noticed on my own, like how KentucKY ends with its abbreviation (which I managed to notice while trying to think of FJ precalls for this game) and AlbaNY ends with its state's abbreviation (which hasn't been in an FJ yet; keep it in your back pocket!).

Re: Friday, November 17, 2017 Game Recap and Discussion [SPOILERS]

Had Alan got that DD right, he would have gone into FJ! with 22400 for the day, and have to risk 20001 to protect from a double by Buzzy. Buzzy would normally wager 14399, leaving him with 2 more than Alan if they both neg on FJ. BUT! Austin becomes a factor here. Buzzy would limit his wager to the...

Since when is "Moll Flanders" a full fifth of a 55-word title?
It's not, but "The Fortunes and Misfortunes of the Famous Moll Flanders, &c." is.

Austin: You have a lock on second place, but you have to risk it for a chance to win. To hold second place, bet less than $4,700. Since you have to get FJ right to win, you might...

Re: Thursday, November 16, 2017 Game Recap and Discussion [SPOILERS]

Kalamata olives are just the dark olives. They're nothing new. I had no idea what they were going for with that clue though, because it was written "All of" not "Olive." Incorrect. It was "olive." My mistake, you're correct. It was "Olive of you." I guess my brain just read it as "all of you." Just...

Re: Thursday, November 16, 2017 Game Recap and Discussion [SPOILERS]

I am also surprised they didn't give Austin credit for "transsexual" since it does also have 11 letters and it did used to be the term even though it's not in favor now. You're right. Transsexual was the accepted term in the 90s, and it fits the category. Austin was robbed. The problem is, "transse...

Re: Thursday, November 16, 2017 Game Recap and Discussion [SPOILERS]

I'm mad about the "s"es being negged in the Triple Rhyme Time category. +1 If you are pretending that "nun fun run" is an expression, you should be able to make it plausible. That wasn't the issue (that was the DD Austin got right). It was "brown clown down," which Austin added apostrophe-s to. (If...

Re: Thursday, November 16, 2017 Game Recap and Discussion [SPOILERS]

(Is this the lowest-scored first final game of a ToC since the Great Doubling?) Vijay Balse, Jason Zollinger, and I entered game 2 with $9,200, $0, and $5,800 respectively, which is $300 under these guys combined. I'm mad about the "s"es being negged in the Triple Rhyme Time category. Have the judg...

Re: Wednesday, November 15, 2017 Game Recap and Discussion [SPOILERS]

I thought I got Pétain because it was a response in the first game of the 2009 ToC. Turns out it was an incorrect response to a clue about Foch. But it was a correct response in a later ToC... the very next one, in fact... in a game I played in. Whoops! (Vijay got it; I guarantee I was clamming.)

I see Jason went for the old Profiles in Courage wager
Is this supposed to be funny?
I think it's supposed to be a reference to the wager that, coupled with Leslie Frates' $0 wager, put Brad Rutter in the M$M finals.

Re: Tuesday, November 14, 2017 Game Recap and Discussion [SPOILERS]

I came up with Death of a Salesman , thinking it was just Willy and his sons plus a couple other dudes. I didn't suddenly remember that there were women in the play (including one just called "Woman"), but I did remember Arthur Miller was still alive in 1991, so his estate wouldn't have been doing t...

Going through the list of Vice Presidents, I thought I'd only recognize a few names of VPs who didn't ascend to the presidency prior to the mid-20th Century, specifically Burr and Hamlin. But there are a few other noteworthy/recognizable ones -- George Clinton, Elbridge Gerry, John Calhoun, and Joh...

Re: Maintaining Confidentiality of Who Has Won on Jeopardy!

I would say "Quiz Bowl acquaintances" characterizes Ken and Matt's relationship more than "friends," really, and given the quizzical circles they ran/run in, it shouldn't be terribly surprising that they'd become LL members independently of each other.
