Re: Thursday, July 12, 2018 Game Recap and Discussion [SPOILERS]

"Colorful berries" in the top box could be any of them. Haaaaah. Not if you watch Jeopardy regularly and recognize that when the writers shoehorn "colorful" into a clue it means the correct response is going to have a color in its name. Oh duh. Straw, rasp, and boysen aren't colors. Well, I have he...

The FJ! clue is a classic coin toss when I would never expect a 3/3 on the show while someone should always get it right.
And within three years it was no longer accurate, since
SpoilerShow
Toni Morrison
became the other in 1993.

Re: Tuesday, July 10, 2018 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

Am I crazy, or did Alex pronounce Cerasus with a hard c? That led me further away from the answer. He did, but that made it sound more like cherries than I was pronouncing it in my head from reading the clue in the NY Times. Even if I waited until hearing him say it, I would still have been thinkin...

Re: Wednesday, July 11, 2018 Game Recap and Discussion [SPOILERS]

The FJ results make it all moot, but if Stel had gone TDD, not only would he have had second place entering FJ, but also a two-thirds game (albeit in Stratton's Dilemma*). *I just came up with a term for a Stratton's Dilemma game such as this one would have been with a Stel TDD, in which third place...

Re: Tuesday, July 10, 2018 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

The presence of Turkey was a bit of a misdirect, offering an A-to-B path to an incorrect response (a common fruit cultivated in the Mediterranean/Middle East > dates or figs), rather than an A-to-C path to the correct response (Cerasus > looks like cerise > French for cherry). Not just French -- th...

I guessed Norway on Tuesday, could only muster the joke guess of "Val-Mart" on Friday. I got that the word "value" literally and directly figured into the retailer's name, but never got as far as shortening it to an initial.

"SOMEONE WITH EXTRA ACREAGE BETWEEN EYEBROWS & HAIRLINE MAY BE PUNNINGLY CALLED THIS". I forgot the category was BY THE NUMBERS so I guessed "highbrow".
Yeah, what was the correct response to that one? Didn't sound like something I was familiar with.
"Five-head" (as opposed to forehead)

I'm safe as long as at least one of these three things happens: 1) I tie or win, 2) ValadaC loses, 3) BoysenG ties or loses.
1 didn't happen, but 2 and 3 did. The bottom 5 of the rundle remained unchanged between Tuesday and today.

Re: LearnedLeague 77 - Official Thread

I'm #24 in a rundle where #26-28 will be relegated. I'm tied in the standings with ValadaC, leading her with a -5 MPD to her -13. In 26th place is BoysenG, who's a point behind me in the standings, with a -27 MPD. Barring forfeits by anyone else, one of the three of us will be relegated. I'm safe as...

Re: At the risk of looking foolish...

Okay, so I'm going to add to this looking foolish thread. I'm not able to find phrases using the search box. I know about using + or - for specific words, but I don't know how to search for something like "in the news". Even if I use quotes, it returns the individual words. Are we talking J! Archiv...

Re: Monday, July 2, 2018 Game Recap and Discussion [SPOILERS]

The ghost of Hamlet's father never mentions a porcupine, so that was an odd clue, especially for the $400 box. The correct response is "what is a porpentine?" Same animal, but not the same name or pronunciation. The accepted and presumably expected response was simply incorrect. (Note: Don't bother...

  :( :(  :( :( The best I could come up with was Rose Bowl on Wednesday. I couldn't conceive of an annual sporting event going on in multiple areas. With the Flowering Peach area mentioned, even I should have been able to get it. "Unclean" made me think of "out, ...

Re: Wednesday, June 27, 2018 Game Recap and Discussion [SPOILERS]

Judges: In "Math Words", "P: Scheme up this figure with a polygon for a base & triangles with a common vertex for faces" "polyhedron" instead of "pyramid"? Doesn't fit the "Scheme up" clue, but works otherwise. It's what I said, so I'm not sure I can give an unbiased opinion. I would rule 'no'. A p...

Most of the hits I got were from the 80s.
So when most of the hits were from the '80s, you assumed it was only used in the '80s? I don't get it.

Re: The Official TPH Education Thread (POTENTIAL GAME DAY SPOILERS)

On an unrelated note. Pre-Fame Celebs for $400 in this game : "Just for the taste of it", Demi Moore crawled onto a ledge to get a can of this beverage & plummeted off (but survived) I thought this was by far the most obscure in the category. "Just for the Taste of It" was Diet Coke's slogan for on...

I filled in 2/1/96 to complete Bill Sloan’s run: http://www.j-archive.com/showgame.php?game_id=6032 Frank hit the last DD on clue 29 with only a $1,000 clue remaining. He had $2,700 to Eitan's $4,500 and Bill's $11,900. Barring a neg from Bill, his only chance of winning was to bet at least $2,250 ...
