Re: Tuesday, January 16, 2018 Game Recap and Discussion [SPOILERS]

If the scores had been $14,800 to $16,800 at the time instead of $12,800 to $14,800, I wonder if David would still have blown $400 responding with Java to "this island of the Philippines." That may be the clue that ends up haunting him.

Re: Monday, January 15, 2018 Game Recap and Discussion [SPOILERS]

What was the La La Land joke? I missed it. A clue in the category of supporting casts named actors in La La Land , then said no, wait, and named actors in Moonlight , in reference to last year's Oscar ceremony in which Best Picture was mistakenly given to the former film and then corrected to the l...

Re: TPH's "Did you get this?" poll (potential weekly spoilers)

So, TPH, now that you've got 87 responses to your poll, a statistically valid sample in my eyes, what did you learn? Do you feel that any of those questions was undervalued? Persephone is the only one with less than a 66% get rate, but is a $400 clue (and 54% isn't tragic) The problem is that those...

Re: FJs for the 1/8/18 week

:(  :( :(  I said Truman on Monday and had the presence of mind Thursday to name a Best Picture nominee from last year's awards—unfortunately I could only think of the infamous two, and I knew the winner wouldn't be the correct one, so I said La La Lan...

On January 23, 2004, two contestants had the last name Meehan.
On June 13, 2008, two contestants had the last name Goodman.
What if one day, there is an episode where all three contestants have the same last name. :o
:)
(It hasn't happened yet, but the Meehans and Goodmans have been noticed.)

Re: Friday, December 27, 2013 Game Recap & Discussion [SPOILERS]

Some of us who saw the scores on the second DD in DJ! at clue 29 probably screamed to wager $800. Not me. $5,000 works fine there. Jerry's shot for a nice round number was not only $2,200 too small to prevent Avram's breaking the lock with an extra $2,000, it was also $200 shy of putting Jerry in p...

Re: Thursday, January 11, 2018 Game Recap and Discussion [SPOILERS]

This game saw a similar FJ scenario: no really correct answer (the intended answer city having had a much smaller population in 1918 than in whatever census the clue was based on counted), but here the player was invited back quietly, and never appeared on the old Sony board to satisfy its inquirin...

If Julie had gotten her DD right, she would have won, and then they'd have had to invite Gilbert and Rebecca back.

Re: HQ Trivia

I went 23/24 on today's questions, winning this afternoon and getting out on Q11 with Jimmy. After this afternoon's Q10, there were still over 3,000 people left, and I decided there was either going to be an answer that knocked a lot of people out, or a lot of winners getting a dollar or two, and th...

Re: Learned League 75 - Official Thread

I finished in the top 50 in the Rare Video Games 1DS. (A few days ago when I saw it in the upcoming topics, I made sure to do a quick Google and remind myself of the title of "Air Raid," which I thought was inevitable as an answer and likely to be little gotten.) I had five answers I was sure of and...

I had to think a moment to pull up Warren, and then made short work of anagramming it to Warner, without being able to name the Virginian senator.

Re: The Official TPH Education Thread (POTENTIAL GAME DAY SPOILERS)

"Auld" = old = not new, so not New Year's Day. No coin necessary. I'm not so sure about that. Auld Lang Syne is generally sung after midnight at a New Year's party. I'd be reluctant to ring in and guess whether that's considered Eve or Day. Yeah, but "Auld" isn't describing the new year in the song...

Re: Tuesday, January 9, 2018 Game Recap and Discussion [SPOILERS]

I'm disappointed that Tarantino appeared in a J! round clue, thus disqualifying him from showing up in the WHAT IN TARNATION category. Wow, that is disappointing (now that you mention it). And to my knowledge, there has never been a response in one of those "every response can be found in the lette...

Re: The Official TPH Education Thread (POTENTIAL GAME DAY SPOILERS)

"Auld" = old = not new, so not New Year's Day. No coin necessary. "Bairn" is a gimme for anyone slightly familiar with Scots (referring to the language/dialect, not the people). "With a face only a mother could love" may be a hint towards baby, but not a particularly strong one. What season is foggy...

Btw, it's supposed to be "ZEER-o-eth", not "ZEE-roth", right? Have I been pronouncing it wrong all this time?
The clue said it was a six-letter word; your pronunciation makes it seven. "ZEER-oath" is more like it.

See if you can get all three:
THE OSCARS

1 of only 3 movies to be nominated for both Best Picture & Best Foreign Language Film in the same year
My response would have been the last one. If pressed to guess others, I might have guessed the other response not given.

Re: HQ Trivia

I figured since Dubai was being mentioned on its own, all bets were off, and I said Abu Dhabi.

I lasted to the twelfth question, which I got wrong, and that used up my extra life for some reason (no, I wasn't counted as a winner).

Edit: my extra life came back.
