Re: Wednesday, April 14, 2021 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

Any reason "drum major" doesn't work for It's the person leading a marching band, sometimes twirling a baton Arguably they don't twirl their batons, but I think they'd have to accept it. (Full disclosure: I said "drum major" too.) edit: never mind, drum majors can twirl batons. I don't see why they...

Re: Wednesday, April 14, 2021 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

I had pekoe, but was confused by the wording of the clue. I thought pekoe was the "it" in the clause "when preceded by orange, it's a reference to the leaves, not the flavor" and clammed because I didn't understand how pekoe could refer to a flavor.

Re: Tuesday, April 13, 2021 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

$18,200 to $16,800 to $13,600 In Norah's position, I would have wagered $7,199 to stay above the $6,399 I anticipated for Dennis if we both missed. So if I had gotten FJ right (Sagittarius was my first thought, I considered Orion, but stayed with Sagittarius, thereby violating the maxim "Stick with ...

Re: Monday, April 12, 2021 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

The "they call me" TOM for the soda took me in a different direction, as I thought Donovan instead of Poitier and went to Mello Yello. I don't think I would have rung in on it, because "cherryish" isn't how I understood its flavor to be, but I said it aloud at home and felt pretty sheepish.

Re: Jeopardy! Interim Host Thread

UPDATE: the official TOC tracker has been updated to reflect Steve Moulds' spot in the tournament, as opposed to his having been previously noted as an alternate following Brayden's untimely passing, so them starting to confirm who's in the TOC might've just turned the theory of the TOC being held ...

Today I was playing the game Puzzly Words (4 one-minute rounds, 16 letter tiles per round with Scrabble values, try to use them all in up to three words of 2-8 letters in length) and was up against an Allyson whose user picture (which, if you play through your Facebook account as I do, is just your ...

Re: Final Jeopardy! Clues

HISTORICAL YEARS It's the only year to have the death of a sitting U.S. President and a reigning British monarch. Hint: William McKinley and Queen Victoria 1901 Heck, she was Queen for the deaths of the first FIVE US Presidents to die in office! Not quite; she missed the fifth by several months.

Re: Friday, April 9, 2021 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

I knew The Flaming Lips' song was "Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots," and I predicted the "ninjas" neg. Between the name Yoshimi and the karate quote (to say nothing of having it at $400), it feels like negbait to me. I think the clue would have to say something about sci-fi to have a chance at preve...

Re: Thursday, April 8, 2021 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

Video of MarkBarrett's second game was just shared on the board today; the endgame was slightly reminiscent of this episode's, with a triple stumper FJ and the leader covering third place but not second. In both cases it saved them a few thousand dollars, but it also saved Elizabeth Randisi the game.

Re: Reretaken Down

Someone mentioned the Sporcle world capitals quiz in a game thread and it reminded me of something a little afield from the topic so I'll post it here. Lately and on many occasions at this point, I've been doing the Jetpunk countries of the world quiz, which has a map that changes color for each cou...

Re: Thursday, April 8, 2021 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

My mind instantly went to Brazil, but just as quickly I realized the capital was not what I was thinking of when I pictured Brazilian crowds. So I went west to Argentina, and liking Buenos Aires, I kept it in my pocket and went north to Lima. It felt like a lucky get, and although I think I stay awa...

Robert Caro must have written that sentence with the hope that it would get quoted for a Final Jeopardy.

Re: Tuesday, April 6, 2021 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

I just looked at the game dynamics graph and saw that after the second clue, there was no change in the standings until FJ. That is to say, after Chris's first neg, he, Erin, and Brandon remained in third, second, and first place respectively through the end of DJ.

hot and dim was supposed to lead to the interior of a plane? i was thinking of some cabin with no electricity. Fell for Daniel Boone. Was confused about Texas being in the Midwest/Abilene clue. 20th C American History pretty much precludes Daniel Boone as the answer. I think CyrusChan's Boone respo...

Re: Tuesday, April 6, 2021 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

My first thought was Calvin Coolidge, who was sworn in in the middle of the night by his father, a notary public, on the family farm. (He was sworn in again later by someone whose authority to do so wasn't as debatable.) But in the middle of the night it's not so sweltering. The only other person I ...

Quoting it here because it's a better thread for it than the "J! in the media" thread: I don't know where this belongs but it seems close enough to report on a wheel of fortune rule controversy here. https://www.foxnews.com/entertainment/wheel-of-fortune-contestant-lost-technicality-rule-change-lovi...

Re: Final Jeopardy! Clues

That’s not a geography question, it’s a sports question. If you don’t know your World Cup hosts/winners, you’ve got zero chance. If it were some random WC, I'd agree with you. But I'd argue the first WC is more notable and worthy of knowing what country hosted it. Once you know the country, it beco...

This is what I had on the catcher clue: https://i.imgur.com/lAKTxbM.mp4 I'm watching on YouTube TV on KABC in Los Angeles. Came in fine for me, catcher and next clue call. Also KABC. I do watch OTA, though, maybe it was a cable/satellite hiccup? Sounds like it's YouTube's glitch; I watched KABC on ...
