Re: Millionaire 2018-19 Season Discussion [SPOILERS]

Well, that was good timing; pub quiz just had a question asking for the only two people to

win two Nobel Prizes in the same category. I only had one, but it was one more than my team would have had if I hadn't watched Millionaire today.

Re: Should the Teen Tournament Winner Get a TOC Invite?

Andrew Westney was a Teen Tournament winner, and played in the 80s BOTD (in my match). He was fully competitive; granted, this was about 23 years after his Teen appearance. April McManus was also a Teen Tournament winner in 1991, and made it to the semi-finals of the TOC in 1992 (again, in my match...

Re: Millionaire 2018-19 Season Discussion [SPOILERS]

Well, that happened. A contestant used her +1, then her 50:50, and then the two did rock, paper, scissors to determine her final answer. (Incorrect, down to $5,000 from $10,000.)

Re: Tuesday, November 13, 2018 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

I did a Lord of the Flies–related project my senior year (2000-2001) (although I got away with not reading the book—my project was based on an early scene that I felt foreshadowed things that I understood happened later in the book).

Re: Tuesday, November 13, 2018 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

I think Venator also has a singular distinction in the show's history - the only player to win a tournament game and not advance (or in the case of a final, win the event). There was also Andy Richter, who was unable to continue in the Million Dollar Celebrity Invitational due to his participation ...

And those other challengers' names are:
Jim Newman
Denise Rechter
I shared the video with Jim, and he said the show never aired (at least first-run) in LA because of wildfire coverage; now they're calling the current fires the worst since 1993.

specified that the poet was female (and as far as I can tell they only ask about two female sonneteers). Who's the other one? Dickinson didn't write sonnets, so she's out. So... Christina Rossetti? She gets mentioned along with her brother in relation to sonnets in one clue. Edna St. Vincent Millay...

Re: Wednesday, November 7, 2018 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

(13 + 14) x 15 = not even a WAG on my part either. I can't for the life of me see an easier way to do 27 x 15. (Full disclosure: I spun my wheels on this one, and think it was pretty tough to expect someone to do on their feet.) 27 = 30 - 3 30 x 15 = 450 3 x 15 = 45 450 - 45 = 405 I know a four-ste...

Re: Thursday, November 8, 2018 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

And it just happened to be in all three contestants' hammerhouse? It *was* the Teen Tournament, after all. I think a lot of J! material on literary topics is focused on stuff that used to be taught, but isn't so much anymore, and yet remains Stuff You Need to Know. It wasn't surprising that the kid...

Re: New old games in the J! Archive

I know one of the challengers in that game because he usually proctors the WQC in Los Angeles. So of course Alex gave his and Rachael's last names in the interviews, and not the other challenger's.

Re: Thursday, November 8, 2018 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

I thought pairing sonnets to Browning was obscure for the top box. The clue wasn't "pairing sonnets to Browning." It quoted her most famous line from her most famous sonnet, gave the title of the famous collection it came from, and specified that the poet was female (and as far as I can tell they o...

Re: Should the Teen Tournament Winner Get a TOC Invite?

In a similar discussion on the board years ago, I came up with the idea of putting them on the list of ToC qualifiers, but ranking them rather than giving them an automatic bid (to put it more precisely, counting them as a 3x or 4x champion with $75,000—the grand prize at the time—although counting ...

Re: Tuesday, November 6, 2018 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

Also, a note on Chacko: I recall reading a write-up on the 2000 ToC by an insider or insiders (possibly hosted on Michael Dupée's site) where it was explained that Chacko knew what was probably the correct answer in his SF FJ, and deliberately chose something else because he was in third place and ...

Re: Tuesday, November 6, 2018 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

There are many things the powers don't give specific reasons for and teen champs no longer invited to the TOC is one of them. That leads to speculation. While one guess could be on target, five others could be way off base. The discussion has of course come up previous times over the years. I do no...

  :(    :( I got spoiled on Dear Evan Hansen . It's one of the hazards of living on the west coast and being on social media with other J! people; I was innocently scrolling Twitter and saw a retweet of the official DEH account's video of their ...

That was tough to watch. Poor kid. Easy FJ again. I don’t think “pepper shaker” should’ve been accepted since it doesn’t grind.
I assume you're referring to Audrey's response, but she said "pepper grinder."

Was there a TOM in the UCLA clue other than the year that would lead one to the correct answer rather than USC? I clammed, since I didn't know USC is about 40 years older, but I feel like I may have missed something else.

Can anyone think of alphanumeric anatomy not pertaining to the spine?
I had a tumor once. It was B9.

Nice. I just had one of my own removed this summer! (It was a lump of fat right in the center of my forehead, for real.)
