Also, now I get why it's called the "West Indies".
I got credit for "Dutch West Indies Company." There is definitely no "scullery/sculling"-esque questioning on my part for that one.

"Iran Hostage Crisis" should never have been accepted for what occured on 01-20-81. No BMS was utter bullsh*t.
Luckily Ian didn't say "Iran Hostage Crisis."

Re: The Official TPH Education Thread (POTENTIAL GAME DAY SPOILERS)

"The Troubles" was the name given to the decades-long violent conflict in N. Ireland between Irish nationalists/republicans (who want N. Ireland to join the Republic of Ireland and are generally Catholic) and Unionists/loyalists (who want N. Ireland to remain in the United Kingdom and are generally...

Re: The Official TPH Education Thread (POTENTIAL GAME DAY SPOILERS)

Still, with Michigan being made up of TWO peninsulas, it's not wrong to think that one of them may be the biggest one. Apparently it is. So then is it just me having home field disadvantage? Because "peninsula" is such a part of Michigan's identity that I saw no reason to even consider any other st...

Re: Learned League 75 - Official Thread

Three of my cousins were in a high school production of Curtains recently, but the only credit from the show I could remember was Rupert Holmes. I thought of Barack Obama, but decided that a book published so close to the anniversary of the election would probably have pictures of Hillary Clinton. A...

I immediately thought yin and yang upon seeing "pair," but "orange and azure" made me reconsider, and I switched to the sun and the moon, figuring that Taiji must be the ancient symbol that made the clue relevant to the category.

Re: HQ Trivia

For Android users who'd like to get in on the action, there's a knockoff called "The Q." It's still in beta, and the jackpots are smaller, but they've got less than 1% of HQ's level of participation, so the individual payouts can be comparable to or better than HQ's.

Not so far. It's created by a couple of the creators of Vine, and it seems like they've got a pile of venture capital going into the prizes. They must have their eyes on big things.

I didn't have a direct connection between the song title and Randy Travis, but I have heard the song, and I was able to play it back in my head and know that it was unmistakably in Randy Travis's voice.

Re: Learned League 75 - Official Thread

Not recalling your nom de Llam', I can't check if "scull" was accepted or not, but I'm guessing that it was, and that the commissioner didn't want to penalize people who figured out "scull," thought the question compelled a suffix, and chose the wrong one. Why do you say that? If it's the counterpa...

Re: Learned League 75 - Official Thread

I'm torn. On one hand, "scullery" refers to something completely different from sculling and I think the former should be considered a "close but no cigar" answer. On the other hand, acceptance of "scullery" is my margin of victory, and I'm at #4 in an A rundle at more than two thirds of the way th...

I got beans because I got it wrong in LL57. I think that of the questions that have been repeated thus far in my career, that one had the shortest echo.

I've just discovered I lead my rundle in defensive efficiency, with an average of .884. I've given up five unforced points total (and three of those were in the first match). This can't last long now that I've noticed it.

I've heard of Robert's Rules of Order before, but I think I even heard its origin story in a podcast this year (I think it was an episode of "Every Little Thing" about the Senate parliamentarian).

I'd have been strongly tempted to go $13,199 from Kyle's position.

I got one question right yesterday and was sure I was going to lose but I pulled a 3(1)-2(3) for my first Buckner win.
Nice! I've been LLing for six years and have yet to be on either side of a Buckner (although I believe I've been on both sides of a tie where one player got two fewer right).

Re: Tuesday, December 5, 2017 Game Recap and Discussion [SPOILERS]

Kyle got negged for saying Uranus when the clue wanted uranium. I guess they didn't have the heart to neg him again when he made the opposite error. But the clue for which he said curium was really asking for the Curies. That clue asked for the Curies just as much as the previous one asked for Uran...
