Re: Final Jeopardy! Clues

HISTORICAL YEARS It's the only year to have the death of a sitting U.S. President and a reigning British monarch. Hint: William McKinley and Queen Victoria 1901 Heck, she was Queen for the deaths of the first FIVE US Presidents to die in office! Not quite; she missed the fifth by several months.

Re: Friday, April 9, 2021 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

I knew The Flaming Lips' song was "Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots," and I predicted the "ninjas" neg. Between the name Yoshimi and the karate quote (to say nothing of having it at $400), it feels like negbait to me. I think the clue would have to say something about sci-fi to have a chance at preve...

Re: Thursday, April 8, 2021 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

Video of MarkBarrett's second game was just shared on the board today; the endgame was slightly reminiscent of this episode's, with a triple stumper FJ and the leader covering third place but not second. In both cases it saved them a few thousand dollars, but it also saved Elizabeth Randisi the game.

Re: Reretaken Down

Someone mentioned the Sporcle world capitals quiz in a game thread and it reminded me of something a little afield from the topic so I'll post it here. Lately and on many occasions at this point, I've been doing the Jetpunk countries of the world quiz, which has a map that changes color for each cou...

Re: Thursday, April 8, 2021 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

My mind instantly went to Brazil, but just as quickly I realized the capital was not what I was thinking of when I pictured Brazilian crowds. So I went west to Argentina, and liking Buenos Aires, I kept it in my pocket and went north to Lima. It felt like a lucky get, and although I think I stay awa...

Robert Caro must have written that sentence with the hope that it would get quoted for a Final Jeopardy.

Re: Tuesday, April 6, 2021 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

I just looked at the game dynamics graph and saw that after the second clue, there was no change in the standings until FJ. That is to say, after Chris's first neg, he, Erin, and Brandon remained in third, second, and first place respectively through the end of DJ.

hot and dim was supposed to lead to the interior of a plane? i was thinking of some cabin with no electricity. Fell for Daniel Boone. Was confused about Texas being in the Midwest/Abilene clue. 20th C American History pretty much precludes Daniel Boone as the answer. I think CyrusChan's Boone respo...

Re: Tuesday, April 6, 2021 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

My first thought was Calvin Coolidge, who was sworn in in the middle of the night by his father, a notary public, on the family farm. (He was sworn in again later by someone whose authority to do so wasn't as debatable.) But in the middle of the night it's not so sweltering. The only other person I ...

Quoting it here because it's a better thread for it than the "J! in the media" thread: I don't know where this belongs but it seems close enough to report on a wheel of fortune rule controversy here. https://www.foxnews.com/entertainment/wheel-of-fortune-contestant-lost-technicality-rule-change-lovi...

Re: Final Jeopardy! Clues

That’s not a geography question, it’s a sports question. If you don’t know your World Cup hosts/winners, you’ve got zero chance. If it were some random WC, I'd agree with you. But I'd argue the first WC is more notable and worthy of knowing what country hosted it. Once you know the country, it beco...

This is what I had on the catcher clue: https://i.imgur.com/lAKTxbM.mp4 I'm watching on YouTube TV on KABC in Los Angeles. Came in fine for me, catcher and next clue call. Also KABC. I do watch OTA, though, maybe it was a cable/satellite hiccup? Sounds like it's YouTube's glitch; I watched KABC on ...

Re: New old games in the J! Archive

KTRK-TV interviewed Doug Miller yesterday. He was a 3 day champ back in the 1st season. Does anyone know the specific airdates that he was on: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=14BIdpoaUls The champ in his game we saw was named Bruce. Bruce Rhodewait won a game on April 19, 1985. The only other S1 Br...

...and the 1995 Teen Tournament is complete. https://www.j-archive.com/showgame.php?game_id=6988 This appears to be a full-credits show. My corrections: HISTORIC NAMES $300: the wrong consonant is doubled in the Hun's name. POP MUSIC $100: I think the band's name is always rendered with three perio...

Re: How Did Dr. Oz Do as Host? (His actual performance, not your opinion of him)

I haven't actually been keeping track, so I have to say this with the disclaimer that confirmation bias may have come into play: I think Dr. Oz has had the most clue intonation errors of the guest hosts so far. By that I mean that several of his readings indicated (to my ears, anyway) that he hadn'...

Interesting observation, Sg, but he's reading the clue off the card, and do we know that the line breaks are the same on his card as they are on the board?
Enough of his weird readings have coincided with the line breaks as seen by us that it's a conclusion I'm willing to draw.
