Amy Dolenz! You should get that on your flashcards just on principle. And Erica Eleniak as a correct response! Along with the movie Under Seige in the clue. Great additions. More college games, please.
Should be Under Siege (i before the e) unless the clue as broadcast misspelled the word.

Re: The Official TPH Education Thread (POTENTIAL GAME DAY SPOILERS)

A look into my Coryats: https://j-scorer.com/shared/TenPoundHammer It does seem like my Coryats are trending a little higher, but I'm still absolutely dreadful at FJ! And some of the outliers are VERY outlying, such as the -$1,600 on 7/3. Should any of this give me pause on my prospects? Probably. ...

Re: Wednesday, July 17, 2019 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

Well, Sam, you got beat fair and square, but not before doing what you came to do for five glorious games. And you've got a ton of time now to prep for your TOC. Of course, so does Ryan Bilger who I'm sure is itching for a rematch. I'm hoping to see you guys duke it out in a two-day final. Mrs Pengu...

Anyone else notice that on today's episode, they had both answers Concorde and Concord?

I added 5/10/88 (Seniors QF2): http://www.j-archive.com/showgame.php?game_id=6372 I'm confused about who gave which response in the $500 BOTANY clue. And is the wording right on the $100 WORD ORIGINS clue? "Not surprisingly, this pink bird's name comes from Spanish for 'flamingo'". The flamingo's n...

It was interesting to hear Alex mention the rarity of a DD in the top box. I don't know that we've ever heard it acknowledged on the show before that the DDs are not randomly distributed.

:( :( :( :( :( :( The Montreal Expo just isn't something I know about except in a very vague way. Doing the math to get to 1967 didn't help. I said Woodstock in desperation. I knew enough to rule out mythological figures on Tuesday and to think of Sparta and whatever war/battle t...

The "potassium" one didn't trigger for me since for some reason, "potassium" is one of those "two of one letter, one of the other letter" words that hasn't ever given me any trouble. If there were such a mnemonic for "recommend", on the other hand... For me the trouble comes in place names that I d...

Re: 2019 TOC Updates

Well now that tonight's result is in the books, I can answer a question people have been asking, but will spoiler tag it nonetheless. I'm the alternate for this year's TOC. If I don't get on this time, I'll be brought back when they run the tournament the next time. Honestly, I'd say it's a pretty ...

Re: Season 36 Changes & Predictions

I'm not interested in another tournament full of people we've already seen. I won't be for several years. Meanwhile, if they want to have an exhibition match for charity with Rutter, Jennings, and Holzhauer, ok fine. That's the most I'm up for right now. If they want to bring back past contestants, ...

I guarantee this clue will poll higher than the ones on Monday & Tuesday of this week. No bet. But which side of the wager do you take if someone offers even odds on it polling higher/lower than both clues combined? Everyone remember to use spoiler tags if you want to get specific about those two c...

Re: 2019 TOC Updates

Further ruminations: 1. The point about deferred eligibility makes it sound like no one's getting bumped, but that's nonsense. If they're not bumping someone from this pool, that just means they're bumping someone from the next. You can't add in a non-eligible player and not have it affect someone w...

Re: Tuesday, July 9, 2019 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

I knew the correct FJ response had to be a historical rather than mythological figure. So that ruled out Achilles and Agamemnon. It also ruled out the guess I might have made anyway if I had remembered the guy's name--Aegeus, the father of Theseus. He famously threw himself off a cliff when he spott...

Re: 2019 TOC Updates

Interesting. I was not expecting the Emma Boettcher twist. Will they face her off against Holzhauer in the quarterfinals or hope she makes it to the finals? Jimmy says, "Anyone who could have qualified for this TOC will be held over for eligibility in the next edition". How are we defining "could ha...

Re: Monday, July 8, 2019 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

Didn't Alex say the J-6 category was for 6-letter words starting with J? Jet lag is two words. Yes, Alex did say that. And when Ryan gave the response, Alex confirmed, "That's a 6-letter word starting with J". So either they consider jetlag to be an acceptable variant or they think of jet lag as on...
