Re: J! in the Media

It is, but have any other contestants made similar allegations? Some people may rub certain people the wrong way while others may have found their behavior perfectly acceptable. Why should other contestants have to in order for Robin to be believed? Because she's alleging a character flaw in someon...

Re: Thursday, May 23, 2019 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

I think we all feel for Nate. I know I do. And I think most of us understand that, even knowing that a true DD2 was the smart move there, it's really really hard to pull that trigger. I don't know that I would pull that trigger. I only know that it's the right thing to do. And it helps to reinforce ...

Re: Thursday, May 23, 2019 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

I don't think Nate had enough information to elevate James to the "one of the best ever" category. This is where we disagree. I feel that Nate would have had enough information even if he had never seen James play. 25 games won. $1.9+ MILLION!!! (Holy crap!). Nate learned everything he needed to kn...

Re: Wednesday, May 22, 2019 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

I noticed Liz made an error in her answer about "the large muscle in the thigh" - it should have been quadriceps , not "quadricep" I'm surprised the judges didn't make a correction, but maybe they felt badly since she was already out for FJ? (I'm a stickler for anatomy like my username suggests, lo...

Re: The Official TPH Education Thread (POTENTIAL GAME DAY SPOILERS)

"Pretty Woman" is a film?! As opposed to...? A song by Roy Orbison to which the title of the film clearly alludes and which appears in the soundtrack of the film? And the answer of course is, yes. The song by Roy Orbison is "Oh, Pretty Woman" so there's no possible way to confuse the two titles.

Re: Thursday, May 23, 2019 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

Absolutely, have to do it. A normal game wager to hold lead was 6k but all the chips is the way to go. Too late now. the 7k would have been enough to take a higher total going into the final, correct? Correct. Nate wagered $6000 of his available $13400 on DD2. The extra $7400 would have put him $20...

Re: Thursday, May 23, 2019 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

a) I'm not talking to you, Mark Barrett. This could and should have been a really tense match with an uncertain outcome. b) Nate. Buddy. You've watched this guy play at least three games. You've heard the statistic about his AVERAGE being higher than the previous highest score ever. And you still le...

Re: Wednesday, May 22, 2019 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

Agreed. It's awfully difficult to gauge a player's ability when they're facing James. Everyone is fighting for the scraps, so it's not at all surprising if they try a couple wild guesses. Missing that early DD put her into a hole she just couldn't get out of. Exactly. And I think a good case can be...

It takes a more select group to make gratuitously mean comments on the internet from the comfort of their sofa.
You're spoiled by JBoard. Evidence suggests that group isn't very select at all.

Re: Wednesday, May 22, 2019 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

Leading up to James’s appearances there was a promo that mentioned records will be broken and the audio included, “$110,000” and “Two million dollars.” It now seems very likely that the promo spot was not kidding around. Would you mind spoilering that for others who, like me, didn't want to know fu...

Re: Tuesday, May 21, 2019 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

Agree, and I'd just add that there was some guy named Ken back in the day and that anyone competing now has had almost 15 years to think what they'd do if they faced someone like that. Yeah, but most of my own thinking on that subject is along the lines of, "I hope I don't face someone like that."

Re: The Official TPH Education Thread (POTENTIAL GAME DAY SPOILERS)

Half the archive hits I get by doing "born on the fourth of july" site:j-archive.com are false positives (i.e., category names, clues saying that a famous person was born on the Fourth of July, etc.). The few that are actual hits are much further down the board, and the next-most recent is from 200...

Re: Tuesday, May 21, 2019 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

Another pre-call for Dead Poets Society here. I don't know what other guesses are even plausible for Final. Maybe if somebody had a major brain fart and tried Born on the Fourth of July? Maybe we need a knew initialism: YETOIOYD. You Either Think Of It Or You Don't. You didn't really have to KNOW t...

Re: Tuesday, May 21, 2019 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

DD3 was still hiding when Jason went to $800 of the correct category where James found it in the bottom box. Players need to follows James’s lead for where he is searching for Daily Doubles. His path is a hint for better categories to try. Ok, but before finding DD3 in the bottom box of a category ...

At least somebody knew Bob's Burgers this time around:

For FJ Mrs Penguin and I pre-called Peggy Sue Got Married, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, Wit, and Dead Poets Society. It wasn't any of those but we got it right anyway.

French Authors? Yeah, I'm screwed here. Correct response doesn't ring any bells for me.

Re: Monday, May 20, 2019 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

I negged on "August, Osage County" by guessing "Death in August". At least I got the month right. :D Before the scoring corrections I calculated James' maximum safe bet and figured his daily average would go down slightly. We'd have to wait a while to see James' average game exceed Roger Craig's one...

Re: FJs for the 5/13/19 week

Thought I would have a perfect 5/5 week in week 2 of the tournament, until I missed National Geographic and still don't know how in the world that was rated as high as 64% get on this poll (i.e. who would know this, and why could it have not been some other magazine or some newspaper). Did you thin...

Re: Friday, May 17, 2019 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

Francois got FJ right, so she would have lost anyway Am I missing something? Had Sara made it a true Daily Double, she would have gone into FJ with $20,400. Bet it all, add Thursday's $4,800, and she finishes at $45,600. With Francois betting $0 and finishing with $41,600, this would have given Sar...
