Re: Thursday, June 21, 2018 Game Recap and Discussion [SPOILERS]

I don't know a lot of Australian geography, but to me, Perth is "the one on the other side" and I couldn't have guessed anything else. All the other (or at least, all of the commonly referred-to) major cities are on the east coast. That may be helpful to know because you can be sure your guess is o...

J6 had one today that was flat wrong. Don't be puttin' rum in my mint julep, thank you.
Weird. Two seconds of fact checking would've fixed that. Then another few seconds to google drinks with rum in them. Daiquiri, Piña Colada, Mai Tai, Mojito.... Take your pick.

Re: Thursday, June 21, 2018 Game Recap and Discussion [SPOILERS]

If I'd read the clue correctly, I might have guessed Darwin and missed. But I misread the clue as saying the Indian Ocean was south of the city rather than vice versa. So I rejected Darwin since it wouldn't have a road going south from it to the ocean. I knew Sydney and Melbourne were too big. Canbe...

Re: Tuesday, June 19, 2018 Game Recap and Discussion [SPOILERS]

No argument from me. But, I'm not saying that there's nothing that would lead to Dewey; instead, nothing jumps out that points definitively to him, as Alex implied. Unless you have pretty specific knowledge - like the fact that November 3 was the day after the election - either response seems prett...

Re: Tuesday, June 19, 2018 Game Recap and Discussion [SPOILERS]

Anybody else think Ali should have gotten credit, perhaps after the break, for "semiotics"? Yes, I knew before he said it what they were going for, but when I heard his response I thought to myself "yeah, that works too". This raises similar issues to our 2016 discussion on the Alekhine Defense. A ...

"Semantics" is definitely a better response. I susp...

Re: Monday, June 18, 2018 Game Recap and Discussion [SPOILERS]

I loved Sara's gameplay, and I'm really glad I wasn't in her shoes on that last DD. Econ is a very strong area for me, so I would have wagered aggressively, but I somehow got "prospectors" stuck in my head rather than "speculators." That's a rough way to miss. "Prospectors" even meets the condition...

Crap. Don't click on the corrected spoiler, even if you've already seen Monday's show.
Sorry about that. I've edited my post to make it clear that my spoiler spoils the FJ for both Monday and Tuesday.

Re: Tuesday, June 19, 2018 Game Recap and Discussion [SPOILERS]

I initially expected a reversal when Ali clearly said "Titia" for "Titian". There was no trace of a final N whatsoever. I replayed it several times. Then I turned on the captions and saw that the captioner had him saying "Titian". So I realized there wasn't going to be a reversal. Got stuck on that ...

Re: Tuesday, June 19, 2018 Game Recap and Discussion [SPOILERS]

Sinatra for $200 was a terrible clue. All three contestants "went for the obvious" when Pavloving "New Jersey city" and all three missed. I probably would've needed at least eight more guesses before getting to Hoboken. Definitely YEKIOD. I knew it was Hoboken because that's just one of the things ...

Re: Monday, June 18, 2018 Game Recap and Discussion [SPOILERS]

I too made the die/dye misread at first, but I went down a different path from there. My initial guess was the lava lamp. I was actually reasonably happy with it... except for the category. I wasn't sure about calling the lava lamp a toy. So I kept looking.

Re: Monday, June 18, 2018 Game Recap and Discussion [SPOILERS]

The clues with reversals: GET “OUT”! $200 (Alex said “out” would be at the end of each correct response): I just got 3 cases of pens & 6 cases of Scotch tape all for $20 in this type of liquidation sale Erik was negged for “blow out” and Sara rebounded the expected “close out” with Erik getting a c...

Re: Last Week's contestant run: Conspiracy or Mystery?

There are 6 different orderings of contestants, so any ordering has a 1/6 chance of happening. That would be true if the contestants were randomly selected from a pool that was 50% M 50% F. I'm not sure that's true for podia 2 and 3. It's definitely not true for podium 1. That said, I don't think t...

Re: Friday, June 15, 2018 Game Recap and Discussion [SPOILERS]

In EDIBLE BEFORE AND AFTER, one clue was "Choral singing group that’s got 3 slices of toasted bread, turkey, bacon, lettuce & tomato" and the clue's target response was "glee club sandwich." For some reason, I went more specifically than generically, and blurted "Culture Club sandwich" as my respon...

Re: Friday, June 15, 2018 Game Recap and Discussion [SPOILERS]

I didn't know enough about either geography or Catholicism to get FJ. However, I was able to identify Manitoba based on its shape. I see a number of references on this thread to the "Catholic" nature of this clue. Um, this is a Christian belief and not a specifically Catholic one. Most non-Catholic...

Re: Your guess for Thursday's FJ [SPOILER]

My guess: Libra with ~65% confidence
Backup guess: Gemini with ~30% confidence

Mrs Penguin went with Gemini. I got to feel superior briefly as I explained why I thought Libra was a better guess. Then when Libra was negged on the first reveal, I said, "Well, looks like you were right."
