Ferlinghetti was definitely a YEKIOYD, but I think it's a reasonably well-known bit of trivia that he owns or owned the City Lights book shop in SF.
My twisted logic was, "Well, Ghirardelli is from there, and they're both Italian, so let's go with that." :)

Re: Wednesday, October 2, 2019 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

I'm not afraid to admit what I don't know: NHO Mengele. I paused on that clue and thought, "Should I know this??" I had to turn on subtitles to get the spelling. Overall, the WWII era is a real weak spot for me. A friend recommended "The Second World War" by Anthony Beevor, so I bought the book but...

Re: Friday, October 11, 2019 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

I wrote "Mame" to have someone and before I could write the "T" it hit me it was that other famous name. To me, controversial playwright screams David Mamet, but I thought he might be too young (he would have been 16 in 1963). I even thought of Albee, but didn't think that he was controversial at a...

Unsurprisingly, no one has mentioned that Steven shares his name with a prominent composer.
Why would we?

The haka is quite possibly the greatest thing in all of sports.

Never heard of this story regarding the album. Sad thing is, I was just listening to this album not 4 hours ago. Guessed Springsteen to say something.

Never heard of Member of the Wedding.

Re: Thursday, October 3, 2019 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

Doesn't get much more specific than Oklahoma in 1936... A little knowledge can be a dangerous thing though; I know that area of the US pretty well, so I hesitated between “Dust Bowl” and “Bible Belt”, especially considering that Durant is half the state away from the Dust Bowl area. Eventually came...

Instaget FJ. I didn't realize it was released in 1700; for some reason I thought it was older. "Don't say St. Louis, don't say St...damnit". The Pony Express/St. Joseph connection strikes again. When's the last time a contestant got that right? Also, the average retirement last 8000 days? OK ... ~2...

Hmm... What happens when you hit the roadblock of an inactive player? (Alietr is my Grandllama, and it seems that this line has a large number of current and former JBoard! participants for some reason, but ends at RodriguezD).
At the moment, I don't know of any way past that.

On the plus side, my Integrity Number is 4. :) How do you find that? And for that matter, what is it? It's like the Bacon number. It's basically how far you are from one of the original members. You just click on the flag until you get back to a Charter Member or Commissioner Invite. For me, my cha...

Re: LL82: LearnedLeague

I managed to scrape by with 23rd place out of 26th in my rundle. I lost the final day, but the person just below me did too. I lost 6(5)-8(5) with my opponent getting Leaves (3 points), but missing Slim (1 point). He didn't have a great pop music score, but I figured at least a couple of the people...

(Side note: DoND provides a nice contrast to Let's Make a Deal in the famous Monty Hall problem - in DoND, contestants have no knowledge of where the big prize is. In LMaD, the host always reveals one of the two zonks. That's why you switch in LMaD, but there's no advantage to switching in DoND.) T...

Lucked out on "leaves". Didn't have the slightest clue what it was, but I was looking at the two titles. Hmmm ... Nothing similar in there. Then I looked at the 2nd title and thought that the middle symbol looked kinda like a leaf. No idea if that's what it actually is but whatever works.

Re: Gameplay Strategies

But we all see the lemmings with control of the board continually go to the top of a category and forfeit the chance of finding one. Not hunting for them is simply lowering your chances of winning. Or, just as bad, going back to a category where one was already found. Remember where it was and avoi...
