My wife said "salve" for the silent L category clue where the given answer was "balm." I don't recall the exact wording, but I'm assuming salve would have been acceptable.
Can't see why it wouldn't be.

My first thought in FJ was Oslo, but I didn't think it had changed names three times in the 20th century.
5 million should have steered you away from that. Norway barely has 5 million, much less any city in it.

Like many others here who will report the same, just “Tombaugh” (plenty of Archive hits) was enough to solve the FJ! clue.
That was all I needed.

Re: The Official TPH Education Thread (POTENTIAL GAME DAY SPOILERS)

The easiest way for me to "see" that in my head is by thinking "$3.80 needs to have $1.20 added to it to get to $5.00." That's the type of math I've done thousands of times in my life. (I just did it this week, going out to eat, because I like the total plus tip to come out to a round number.) But ...

Any other Seinfeld fans offended that they accepted "Dreyfus" as Julia Louis-Dreyfus's last name? No, just me?
Offended, of course not. Surprised? Yeah.

1) It's Richard the Lionheart, Alex, not Lionhearted. 2) Sounded to me like Ryan said David Ben-Guron, not Ben-Gurion 3) Speaking of Ryan, I thought the rule was once Alex ruled you wrong, you couldn't change your response. Guess not. 4) Alex should have said, "You have 30 seconds, but you'll need o...

Kazakhstan was my best get of the day. I happened to glance at a globe recently and was surprised by how big it really is, since I thought all the -stans were tiny.
It's pretty much larger than all the other former Soviet Republics combined.

Re: Friday, October 5, 2018 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

On first blush, it seemed to me D-Day invasion was too obvious since "supreme allied commander" was an obvious ref. to Eisenhower. Went with "link-up of Allied and Soviet forces" since Cossacks are Russian soldiers. Kind the way I went, guessing the invasion of Berlin. Never heard of the D-Day plan...

Just a heads-up that my 1DS on the Internet goes live tomorrow. I've geared it to be accessible to people who aren't networking gurus, but there will be a few questions that require a knowledge of the history and operation of the Internet. One of the 3 I actually plan on entering this off-season. L...

I'm betting the category elicited a reaction of "wtf" from many. Could be; I don't think it's ever shown up before. But actor-writer or actor-producer doesn't seem that difficult to suss out. So that's what they meant by the category. Wouldn't have made that connection in a million years. I knew Da...
