Re: Learned League 85 - Official Thread

I was just glad to have staved off relegation this season and now I somehow stumbled into A by jumping from 9th to 4th yesterday!

Can someone design a flag featuring Icarus for me? I think I'm going to need it next season.

Re: Fourth Podium Poll for 6/11/2020

MIGHT have gotten "sin till late" but "a prime time hour" isn't late. Pretty much by definition. "Late" starts AFTER prime time. So I felt that clue steered everyone in the wrong direction. I haven’t seen the episode, but solved it here as “sin till eight”. Maybe that was the writers’ intended answ...

Having watched Marriage Story a couple months ago, it was maddening being able to hum the song but having no clue which musical it came from. :?

Re: Tuesday, March 10, 2020 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

Judges: "Importance of Being Earnest" okay without "the", as the line is NOT "the vital the Importance of Being Earnest"? I would say this is the most correct answer, based on the clue's wording. If anything, the show judges were being (understandably) lenient by accepting it with the "The" included.

Re: Wednesday, March 4, 2020 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

OK, judges: granting that "fallacious" was the desired response, I came up with "specious". Close enough? Had the same answer, so I'm on your side. How about "spurious"? A stretch, I know. But not a huge stretch! Both these answers were certainly less erroneous than mine, for what it's worth.

Re: Learned League 84

I had a brief moment of dread after submitting yesterday when I realized I had neglected to RTFQ and omitted "Station" for Q1, but then quickly reassured myself that it would either be accepted (it was) or was likely to be scored low by my opponent (they put it at 0).

Re: Learned League 84

I've heard of chenille, but never associated it with rugs. Seems like you'd really need to know the French word for caterpillar to get that one right. Yup - I was pleasantly surprised to see my opponent didn't take my French last name into consideration and threw me three points for something I pro...

Re: TD 439 - Buffalo (final results)

Blue Moon is sold as Belgian Moon in Canada - that was my attempt at weaseling into a singleton. That being said, I don't know if any of it is actually brewed at a MillerCoors facility (vs. Molson Coors). According to this article I found, the name difference appears to be because of a trademark sn...

I went with Dickens via Miss Havisham.... putting my ignorance on display here, how would one arrive at Charlotte Brontë? In real life, CB worked as a governess and HATED it. Yeah, to me the TOM here was recognizing that the quote is really about both the character and the author. Otherwise it's a ...

Re: Online Test Recap & Discussion (Pacific), January 30, 2020

Somewhere in the 42-45 range for me, depending on the judges’ generosity (Shallows, just Gregory, and Social Insurance). This one seemed pretty literature-heavy to me - 9/50 questions by my count (10 if you count Twilight) I actually did an analysis a few years back, and all of the tests I looked a...

42, off the video. I found the "Online Games" category for Candy Crush Saga misleading - it had me thinking of MMOs like World of Warcraft. I understand there's an online component, but I'm pretty sure Candy Crush can be played offline, so "Mobile Games" might have been a more suitable category.

47/50 off the video, whereas I usually average around 40. I fully intended to take it last night and got distracted.

I'd have guessed Sarah Polley would be a sole get for me on this board à la Tollund Man, but True North already reported getting her. I told my dad just a few weeks ago that she directed the movie Away from Her and also got nominated for a Best Adapted Screenplay Oscar for it. That makes three of u...
