Re: LL81: LearnedLeague

Was pleasantly surprised (shocked, actually) to win my first match (5(3) 4(4))as an A rundler. Hey, I'm undefeated!

Tiger Woods wins the 2019 Masters. It's his 5th green jacket, 15th major title, and first major win since the 2008 US Open.

I honestly didn't think he'd win another major.
Neither did I, but at 16 to 1 he was worth a flyer and I would have rooted for him anyway.

Re: Online Test Recap & Discussion (Eastern), April 9, 2019

I made my usual dumb mistakes along with the usual brain freezes but I still think it was a hard test. Hit 35 on the number, way too close for comfort. Had a couple of typos but nothing crazy I'm pretty sure so I'll just sit back and hope to audition. Beats the alternative for sure.

Re: LL80: LearnedLeague

Well, I don't see how it can be other than a fluke but I finished 4th in B Horizon. I say fluke because I had a TCA of of only 87 and a so-so DE of .726(the persons who finished 21 and 22 had 85 TCA and both had a better DE). I guess the other statistics would explain, but I'm just putting it down t...

Re: Adult Online Test: Apr 9, 10, 11

The online test is for anyone/anywhere, right? The cities make an impact if one were to qualify? That's how I understood it but would love to know the full process. Thanks all! 1. take test online (yes, it's for everyone), and select audition city when you register 2. everyone who passes the test (...

Re: Tuesday, March 19, 2019 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

I thought of Morocco, but the I decided to read "much closer country across the water" as "country on the way to Mexico" and chose Cuba instead (even though Spain still claimed it at the time). It's my fault for inferring more than was implied, but "across the water" made me think a bigger body of ...

Re: LL80: LearnedLeague

I thought I had a pretty good shot at a rare (for me) six pack, but I stupidly wrote cigna instead of cignus and changed my mind for no good reason from Warhol, who I thought of immediately and confidently, to John Cage, and my six pack became a 4 (4) 5 (3) loss. There's a lesson there, third or fo...

Re: LL80: LearnedLeague

I read cephalopodic and thought of ink but then kept thinking (usually a good idea, but sometimes not) and decided cephalopodic referred to whales so I changed to ambergris but on further reflection decided it must be sperm and went with that. I lost the match but would have lost anyway.

Re: Monday, February 11, 2019 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

I was pleasantly shocked when that clue about Wrigley Field In L.A. came up as twenty minutes earlier I'd been reading all about it in the last chapter of Jane Leavy's "The Big Fella, Babe Ruth and the World He Created". Seems the Babe played a kind of famous barnstorming game there, lots of Hollywo...

Re: LL79: For the LLamas

One of my favorite shows of all time is The Fugitive, starring, you know, David Janssen as Dr. Richard Kimble and Barry Morse as Lt. Philip Gerard, a QUINN MARTIN PRODUCTION. I still watch old episodes occasionally. Yes, I'm an older dude.

Re: LearnedLeague 78 - Official Thread

Finished 14th, 10-11-4, in Horizon B so I guess that's where I'll be next season. Maybe I'll take a remedial math course in the off season (Ms. Hutchinson, et.al. were right all those years ago, my math deficiency would eventually catch up to me -- though it took a long time).

Re: LearnedLeague 78 - Official Thread

I'm friends with my opponent from yesterday on Facebook, so I knew he was a booze connoisseur (he's been "brand ambassador" for two businesses with "spirits" in their name, and another job title on his profile is "drinks writer"), and that he's currently traveling through Italy, so I gave him 0 for...

Re: LearnedLeague 78 - Official Thread

I was pretty sure I had one of my rare six packs but sitcom was wrong as was grappa ( I would have bet a lot on this one).Managed a 5(4) 2(3) win anyway. It would have been closer had not Thorsten accepted my misspelling defenestration as defrenestration. It actually was a typo as I knew and meant t...

Re: LearnedLeague 77 - Official Thread

I finished strong to end up 6th out of 32 in Horizon C, one shy of promotion back to B. Is there an award/name for streakiness? I lost my first five, won the next five and won my last four.

Re: Tuesday, June 19, 2018 Game Recap and Discussion [SPOILERS]

I settled on Dewey but really though they might be trying to trick us. If the paper (Chicago Trib?) went with the Dewey Defeats Truman headline mightn't Truman have thought he lost based on the early returns and sent off the congrats telegram. Not likely, I know, but possible.

Re: LearnedLeague 77 - Official Thread

I feel so much better about opening the season with 1 correct now that I see the get rates. Also, did anyone else not receive the MD results email? It's not a big deal, but I am curious. I didn't receive the results email this morning nor did I receive confirmation when I submitted last night. I le...

Re: FJs for the 4/2/18 week

I usually don't participate in this thread, though I do check it out, but I need to chime in to extol the virtues of The Fugitive, both the original series and the movie. I'm with Davey in that the show was must watch family viewing back in the early 60s and, yes, we're both showing our age. I have ...
