Re: Learned League 86 - Aug/Sep 2020

I was pleased to win three out of my last four matches but that was insufficient to climb out of the hole I had dug for myself and I finished next to last and relegated (I assume) back to B. Not for the first time and probably not the last.

Re: Learned League 86 - Aug/Sep 2020

I'd never heard of Five Moons or the three women in that question, but I knew of only one set of famous Native American sisters, with or without a last name; luckily that set had a last name, and it was the correct answer. I'm not surprised to see the low get percentage. (I could name Maria but not...

Re: Thursday, September 17, 2020 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

I’m guessing the judges wouldn’t accept my FJ response of “who was that dude who was married to Frida Kahlo.” Likewise. This was especially galling as I could clearly recall the movie "Frida" from 15 years or so ago, which was all about their stormy love life, but blanked on the name for the crucia...

Re: Learned League 86 - Aug/Sep 2020

Didn't have to spend much time on the VP question because I knew it cold, Humphrey and Mondale ---- so that's what I submitted. I thought I had already learned the harsh lesson of RTFQ but I guess not. That it urned out not to matter took some of the sting out but it still smarts. Never again!

Re: Learned League 85 - Official Thread

No chance on Vancouver, it cost me a six pack but not the match. Finished 8 14 3, good enough for 18th in A Horizon, which is way better than dead last in my first and only other stay there.

Also went with Smith Jones but had little hope. On the reveal, Prisoner's dilemma makes perfect sense, good clue.

Re: Learned League 85 - Official Thread

This is my 16th season and yesterday was (I'm pretty sure) my first 0(0). Is there a term for this? Goose eggs? Something more clever? Ireland was my first choice but I switched, for no good reason, to Spain (got zero for this anyways). Had no clue on the building but was about to wag barn when I op...

Re: Learned League 85 - Official Thread

Cheesesteak was an instant get but at the end of the day I typed in and submitted cheesecake. Undoubtedly the dumbest thing I've ever done as a LLama. Cost me a tie. I have a funny feeling I'll be relegated out of A by a point, which would serve me right and might be a blessing.

Spain - Bullfighting - The Sun Also Rises Most of the time, yes, but Death in the Afternoon (1932) was Papa's non-fiction paean to bullfighting in Spain. 11 hits in the archive though they give the title and ask for the author. Surprising that asking for the title has not made a TOC appearance.

Re: Learned League 84

Tied the last day, which was good enough to keep me in 4th in B Horizon. Nice to do well but I have no illusions as to what awaits me in my second foray in A.

Re: Learned League 84

Today I had a failure. I somehow read the question about Elizabeth II's newest great-grandchild as saying its name was the same length as hers. I thought, "Well, he's Archie, but A-R-C-H-I-B-A-L-D; E-L-I-Z-A-B-E-T-H. Both nine letters, there you go!" I tied 6(4)-6(4), with that question being worth...

Re: Learned League 84

I made my dumbest mistake ever yesterday (in LL, that is, I've made some doozies in real life), but got away clean. I knew the Suriname Netherlands connection instantly but when it came time to submit I typed Suriname. What can I say. Hopefully one of these days I'll remember Check Your Work! My opp...

Re: The Jeopardy! Anytime Test

It only costs contestant coordinators a couple minutes of time not to dismiss the few non-passers from live events, whereas dismissing them could give rise to embarrassment, confrontation, all manner of awkwardness. Letting a few extra people play the mock game and then dismissing them from content...

Re: The Jeopardy! Anytime Test

So I just took the anytime test (for the first time and I let it submit). Much to my surprise, the information that followed included the fact that a passing score was 35 or better. I though we were pretty much agreed that 35 was most likely the number but no one knew for sure and J! had never confi...

Pathe was one of those I knew I should know but it had to percolate for a long time before it came to me. Went with movie making.

Re: What Would You Ask Alex?

Sorry to be late on this, but it occurs to me that given Alex's love for TCM and classic movies, I'd ask if he's ever thought about doing a co-host movie introductory discussion with Ben Mankiewicz (Ben occasionally does these with celebrities and sometimes with non-celebrity TCM members, and they'r...

Thanks to the archivists getting this up so quickly.

One suggestion..,perhaps a small note indicating who went first in each game, as they had a rather unusual way of doing it.
I must be missing something but I can't find the GOAT games on the archive.

Re: Monday, December 30, 2019 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

By the way, even if you're not a Hemingway fan, and I'm mostly not, his A Moveable Feast is a funny, moving, non-fictional (purportedly) account of his time in Paris with authors like F. Scott Fitzgerald and Gertrude Stein. It's an easy read and a fairly painless way to acquire a lot of Jeopardy!-a...
