Re: Learned League 84

Tied the last day, which was good enough to keep me in 4th in B Horizon. Nice to do well but I have no illusions as to what awaits me in my second foray in A.

Re: Learned League 84

Today I had a failure. I somehow read the question about Elizabeth II's newest great-grandchild as saying its name was the same length as hers. I thought, "Well, he's Archie, but A-R-C-H-I-B-A-L-D; E-L-I-Z-A-B-E-T-H. Both nine letters, there you go!" I tied 6(4)-6(4), with that question being worth...

Re: Learned League 84

I made my dumbest mistake ever yesterday (in LL, that is, I've made some doozies in real life), but got away clean. I knew the Suriname Netherlands connection instantly but when it came time to submit I typed Suriname. What can I say. Hopefully one of these days I'll remember Check Your Work! My opp...

Re: The Jeopardy! Anytime Test

It only costs contestant coordinators a couple minutes of time not to dismiss the few non-passers from live events, whereas dismissing them could give rise to embarrassment, confrontation, all manner of awkwardness. Letting a few extra people play the mock game and then dismissing them from content...

Re: The Jeopardy! Anytime Test

So I just took the anytime test (for the first time and I let it submit). Much to my surprise, the information that followed included the fact that a passing score was 35 or better. I though we were pretty much agreed that 35 was most likely the number but no one knew for sure and J! had never confi...

Re: Learned League 84

Pathe was one of those I knew I should know but it had to percolate for a long time before it came to me. Went with movie making.

Re: What Would You Ask Alex?

Sorry to be late on this, but it occurs to me that given Alex's love for TCM and classic movies, I'd ask if he's ever thought about doing a co-host movie introductory discussion with Ben Mankiewicz (Ben occasionally does these with celebrities and sometimes with non-celebrity TCM members, and they'r...

Thanks to the archivists getting this up so quickly.

One suggestion..,perhaps a small note indicating who went first in each game, as they had a rather unusual way of doing it.
I must be missing something but I can't find the GOAT games on the archive.

Re: Monday, December 30, 2019 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

By the way, even if you're not a Hemingway fan, and I'm mostly not, his A Moveable Feast is a funny, moving, non-fictional (purportedly) account of his time in Paris with authors like F. Scott Fitzgerald and Gertrude Stein. It's an easy read and a fairly painless way to acquire a lot of Jeopardy!-a...

Re: LL83: Learned League

I went to the registration page of the World Wars mini league to check it out but apparently the mere act of doing so has got me registered. That's also fine and dandy as long as it's over by the end of the month, when I'll be incommunicado for a while. It commences 13 Jan and goes for 12 matches s...

Re: LL83: Learned League

Finished middle of the pack in B Horizon so I guess I'll be sent back there, which is just fine with me. Re: LL83: Learned League

Mrs Paradise and I spent a lovely week in St Lucia the winter before last so this one was easy and brought back a lot of good memories. The island is beautiful but Castries not so much. Before you opt for a rental car know that they drive on the wrong side of the narrow, curvy, potholed, mountainous...

Re: LL83: Learned League

I figured the original Italian name in the Suzy Quatro question was "Quattrocchi," and since it said it was shortened I dropped the last syllable. I couldn't have guessed "Suzy Quatro," but "Quattro" was good enough. I got three points for it, which, given I only got two other questions right, was ...

Re: LL83: Learned League

Playing from the sidelines. I opted for Plath over Dickinson, but in retrospect, I should have gotten it because of the "Yellow Rose of Texas" rule. I never knew why turbinado sugar was called that, but I figured it out. My Pop Music score isn't so good, but I'm 58 so "Soul Train" was an instaget. ...

Re: Tuesday, December 3, 2019 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

I watched Jeopardy! for the first time in 1967. Last night's game and tonight's game make the first time in all those years that I have "won the game from the imaginary podium" two games in a row. Carol Channing, (Ft. Knox) Kentucky, meter, seer, mites, Hillary Clinton, miter, Rin Tin Tin. That add...

Re: Tuesday, November 12, 2019 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

I too spent a good part of the 30 seconds trying to figure out exactly what they wanted. One belt or two? If one, which one? I did figure they wanted both and it made sense that problems in the rust belt would send a lot of people fleeing to better opportunities in the sun belt. The clue certainly c...

Re: Monday, October 14, 2019 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

Looking up Lawrence Ferlinghetti in the J-Archive, I found that the writers actually repeated a clue verbatim (verbotem?): here and here . I'm sure this is not the only such instance, but I believe it's the first I've seen of it. That's not the only Poetry clue from the 11/20/2000 show they repeate...

Re: LL82: LearnedLeague

I sat out 82 because I thought I'd be on a long cruise for half of it and didn't want to risk forfeits (it got rescheduled for next May but that's another story), But just for fun I played along. I was kind of surprised the questions weren't mostly in my wheelhouse because that's the way things work...

Re: LL82: LearnedLeague

After finishing dead last in Horizon A I was looking forward to (hopefully) redeeming myself in LL82, albeit in B. But redemption will have to wait until 83. For most of 82 Mrs Paradise and I will be cruising the Baltic/Scandinavia. I'm sure it would be possible to participate from the ship but I do...
