Re: Wednesday, December 4, 2019 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

The Amtrak conductors have always said Dowagiac as "duh-WAH-jack". Johnny had "DOW-a-jack". I grew up 30 miles from there and yes, it's 'Duh-WAH-giac'. Johnny butchered it so bad, I thought it was just some town I never heard of. We'll see if he gets it right tomorrow and I hope Jennifer doesn't ge...

NHO Triumph, Ducati, or "ultimate driving machine" for BMW, and didn't see the TOM for Kawasaki . That was an oddly tough Motorcycle category. the tom there is ninja...they are known for producing the ninja motorcycle Larger hint if far more dated was that for years beginning in the '70s, Kawasaki'...

Re: Friday, November 29, 2019 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

Looks like "thorough" for "through" was a vanishingly rare J! typo in the albatross clue (DJ, Ends in "SS" $1600) from Rime of the Ancient Mariner . "At length did cross" this bird, "thorough the fog it came" 0/5 in Women of Science. I saw no way to figure out "engineering" in the first box. I belie...

I guess weekends are for hijacking game threads - the monte cristo club is where the cool people hang 8-) Any sandwich can be improved by dipping it in batter and deep frying it. I remember the first time I ate a monte cristo. All I could think of was what kind of sorcery is this? Taking a boring h...

I had nothing, and knew I was going to kick myself on the reveal. Couldn't pull it either. Add me to the parade of monks smacking their foreheads a la Monty Python and the Holy Grail . Julie from NYC missing St. John the Divine was surprising (when spotted St. John the Unfinished) Tried to visit so...

I got FJ immediately off "City of Light." When I flew through Buffalo's airport to visit Niagara Falls this past Labor Day weekend, I did a little research on Buffalo and learned that it had acquired that moniker due to being the first U.S. city with widespread electric lighting (which was powered ...

Here's Alanis's (dare I call it ironic?) version of "My Humps":

And here's the original from the Black-Eyed Peas, which... lacks subtlety:

I'll predict Emma, James, and after that last performance, Francois.
I'll predict the same three finalists. Most likely to break up the party: Dhruv and Lindsey.

That was a TOC FJ? I would expect that to be a trigger in a college tournament. Surprised at the number of posters who already said they missed it. :o maybe not all of us are tournament of champions material...never heard of that character before George Saunders as Shere Khan would like a word . Surprised this hasn't had any activity, especially given the new season. But nonetheless, I made my own tier list: Diamond: James Holzhauer, Josh Hill, Emma Boettcher Platinum: Eric R. Backes, Steven Grade, Francois Barcomb Gold: Lindsey Shultz, Anneke Garcia, Kyle Jones Silver: Rob Worman, Alan Du...

Yas, 1979 is when Peking became Beijing. I seem to recall a brief interim period when it was Peiping, but maybe that didn't last long, or maybe that preceded Peking... or maybe it was only in, I dunno, Time or Weekly Reader . There's a pretty good explanation of the transliterations here , though n...

I thought yesterday's set (MD 19) was brutal. I only got two right (Stallone/Rocky and Singapore). I've heard of the Bechdel test, but couldn't come up with the name. Agreed. I felt bad about getting only 3 right (narrowly missed the Taco Bell one) but then saw that Reddpen, my opponent for the day...

However, the "black bird" weapon was the stealth bomber not produced until decades after 1945.... Not quite. Blackbird was the SR-71 plane that flew much farther above earth than previous reconnaissance planes, but I don't think it employed stealth technology (which iirc was introduced in the 1980s...

Did trout have the highest get rate? Surely the highest in a long time. I read that one, and went, "Seriously, Thorsten?" Interested in what people's thought process on the San Antonio one was. Asked for a city with an "eventful history concerning military compounds" I came up with San Antonio, Charleston (Fort Sumter) and Honolulu (Pearl Harbor) and didn't really know how to narrow it down from there. I went with Cha...

For FJ I knew it was a single syllable city and was pretty sure it started with G and ended in "th", but the closest I could get was Goth. Kinda doubt the judges would have given me that. Now if Goth had been correct and I'd written Gath...

If Ryno doesn't mind outing themself, who are you in A Cont? Mainly curious because I know bomtr, hbomb, KillerTomato, slam, StevenH and Woof IRL, assuming trivia conventions count. I'm PenroseB and have yet to crack the top three in any A rundle.
Good luck, everyone!
