Re: Wednesday, February 21, 2018 Game Recap and Discussion [SPOILERS]

I love how none of them realized that the category was "Potent ate Potables." I thought I had at least a decent knowledge of Beatles, but even though I've heard a couple of those songs, "When I'm 64" was my only get. It took a lot of restraint not to say "Sturgill Simpson" on the "Turtles All the Wa...

FJ! was a WECIB. What other bird is famous for "kissing" flowers?
I know this, but for like the 100th time, it just wasn't there when I wanted it. Is there a reason my recall is so God-awful lately?

I thought answering for the author of the book in the top box was a good place to start.
I did read the book and have no idea what it's about or who wrote it.

Re: Tuesday, February 20, 2018 Game Recap and Discussion [SPOILERS]

You're allowed to read all the words. (the "blah"s, so to speak) It's actually encouraged. Then why are there so many other clues where they throw what feels like an entire novel's length of irrelevant garbage that is completely immaterial to getting the clue right? It seems like the trick is "focu...

Re: Tuesday, February 20, 2018 Game Recap and Discussion [SPOILERS]

None of that makes the clue negbaity. The writers gave plenty of information to let someone with a cursory grasp of U.S. history and theater/pop culture know that they were looking for a person portrayed in Hamilton , but not Hamilton himself. "Blah blah blah blah blah blah politician blah blah bla...

No. Just no. Hamilton was never VP, and he certainly didn't live into the 1830s.
Then why did the contestant make the same mistake?

Re: The Official TPH Education Thread (POTENTIAL GAME DAY SPOILERS)

Charlotte Brontë is known almost entirely for Jane Eyre and Emily Brontë is known almost entirely for Wuthering Heights . What's your point? Lots of authors are famous for mostly one book despite writing several. In some cases like Margaret Mitchell, they literally only wrote one book to begin with...

...since when has Oprah had an acting career?

Did anyone here know Madeleine L'Engle? Despite her prolificacy, it seems she's known almost entirely or A Wrinkle in Time, as every archive hit I found was in connection to that book.

Re: Tuesday, February 20, 2018 Game Recap and Discussion [SPOILERS]

Even with 5 clues left on the board in J!, it felt like the round's intro and outro were very tightly edited. Probably the looooong intro to that Wrinkle in Time category. I also bit hard on the Hamilton negbait. That was waaaaaay too easy a trap. I lose out on the Barton/Nightingale coinflip yet ag...

Sometimes you're just going to have to trust us. But if you're skeptical, perhaps doing the research yourself will help the knowledge stick better.
I don't know what I even WOULD research on this question.

Nothing about cold war or communism at all in that clue.

The clue: Dr. Laszlo Kreizler of Caleb Carr's "The Alienist" is this type of professional tracking a killer in 1896 I still don't see how that could possibly lead to anything other than detective. Why are we supposed to know they're a psychiatrist? There is that pesky "Dr." in front of his name. Ve...

Re: Monday, February 19, 2018 Game Recap and Discussion [SPOILERS]

I saw no way to figure out "psychiatrist" in the top box, since they don't normally track crimes, and "Detective" seemed a perfectly cromulent response. Poll request? How was I supposed to know that Table Tennis for $200 was referring to China and not any other big country? Or maybe a small country?...

If you don't know what a perambulator is then this is literally impossible.
