Re: Friday, May 18, 2018 Game Recap and Discussion [SPOILERS]

With me it was more like: "Colony? Must not even be American. Betcha it's gonna be some obscure historical trinket, given how low all the other FJ!s have polled this tournament." Even if I had clicked into PA, I'd have rejected it for not knowing which of their borders if any is 230 miles long, nor ...

Re: Friday, May 18, 2018 Game Recap and Discussion [SPOILERS]

This board felt really schizophrenic, so between that and all the Forrest Bouncing, I couldn't get a feel of the difficulty. The last time I went to Terre Haute, I got to see the nearest surviving Stuckey's to me. It was in dire shape then, and has since closed. No guess on FJ! I could've taken 200 ...

I bit on the Proverbs negbait for ask/seek/knock. That was a tough one. After the Proverbs neg I couldn't ferret out which of the four Gospels it was. The Rap category seemed very YEKIOYD. I should've known Mask Off = Future because I've been dealing with a Wikipedia vandal who keeps trying to say t...

Re: Reretaken Down

I'm 31 and I don't know what half of these names are even supposed to mean. What the hell is Ximena? I look forward to the 2028 edition, which will no doubt include Bazinga, Toriel, Despacito, Szechuan, Retsuko, Cuphead, something with a hashtag in it, and Yanny. I mean Laurel. I mean Yanny. No wait...

Re: Wednesday, May 16, 2018 Game Recap and Discussion [SPOILERS]

I know nothing about Etruscans except the "Those Darn" running gag, so the entire category was a million miles over my head. Saw no way to figure out Romans in the top box. "Jewels" -> "necklaces" was yet another bogus BMS, especially since it misled them down the "diamonds" path. Do they just BMS a...

Re: The Official TPH Education Thread (POTENTIAL GAME DAY SPOILERS)

Not only that, it's a particularly galling non-answer. Your comment suggests that you looked up the definition of "cursive," skipped over the actual definition , and focused myopically on the etymology. So how about going back and actually reading the definition? That etymology does give the idea o...

Re: Tuesday, May 15, 2018 Game Recap and Discussion [SPOILERS]

This should probably go in the dedicated thread, but since there have been several posts back and forth already, I will continue: I guess his point is that he considers cursive only to refer to the specific cursive letters used in the Roman/English alphabet, and not to any form of writing in any al...

Re: Tuesday, May 15, 2018 Game Recap and Discussion [SPOILERS]

No guess on FJ! Even when he spotted the other 5, I had no idea that Arabic was the missing one. And I wouldn't remotely consider Arabic "cursive". And what do you think "cursive" means? The etymology of the word seems to come from a Latin word for "running". What does that have to do with Arabic? ...

Re: Tuesday, May 15, 2018 Game Recap and Discussion [SPOILERS]

AC/DC was my only get in Music. Bon Scott > Brian Johnson, simply by merit of not sounding quite as much like Gilbert Gottfried getting kicked in the nuts. Ran Anagrams, got all but the top box in B to Y because I forgot the category. Rhyme Time was a mess. I had none of the words in $400 (couldn't ...

Re: Hammer's "Did you get this?" poll, take 2

Also, yes, I did vote myself. Obviously I only got the two country music clues.

35% and 49% on top-box clues are pretty shockingly low, especially given that the bottom-box Carlene Carter clue had nearly twice the gets as Nice 'n Easy.

Re: Friday, May 11, 2018 Game Recap and Discussion [SPOILERS]

Is a measly #24 peak on a chart that then had 75 spaces at the time still a "hit"? In the context of pop music, the term "hit" typically denotes a song that charted somewhere in the top 40 places of the Hot 100. It seems reasonable, then, to call a song a "country hit" if it made the top 40 of the ...

Re: Friday, May 11, 2018 Game Recap and Discussion [SPOILERS]

Okay, I just had to fact-check the Garth Brooks clue. He only had three songs on the charts in 1994: "Standing Outside the Fire" (released in December 1993) got to #3, "One Night a Day" got to #7, and "Callin' Baton Rouge" to #2. No quibble there. 1997 checks out. He was a featured vocalist on Trish...
