Re: Thursday, January 17, 2019 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

GOD DAMN IT, WHY DID YOU HAVE TO REMIND ME OF THE GEICO "TINY HOUSE" AD?!?!? Frank said he grew up near a minigolf course in Michigan? I wonder what part of the state? Cooking was over my head. NHO chafing dish, chicory, or chateaubriand. Ran "Holy". I'm guessing the S-word was not in the J!6? Ital...

Re: The Official TPH Education Thread (POTENTIAL GAME DAY SPOILERS)

I know that. I'm just saying that the word "spice" always fools me into thinking of ones that have heat to them because of the etymological connection to "spicy". I KNOW that certain spices are not spicy. Just a quirk of how my brain processes the word.

Re: The Official TPH Education Thread (POTENTIAL GAME DAY SPOILERS)

Just curious. How have you used cinnamon? Hopefully not in the guise of a cruel internet challenge. I think Cinnamon Toast Crunch is the main reason I associate cinnamon with sweet and not "spice". Because again, "spice" conveys a heat factor, and I don't think Red Hots really count as an accurate ...

Re: The Official TPH Education Thread (POTENTIAL GAME DAY SPOILERS)

Willy Brandt is German. Pick Germany, East Germany or West Germany. He's a famous leader and J! players will/should have some familiarity. Ostpolitik gives you Ost=East for the extra hint. No crime if $800 or $1200 while the player result shows top box works as well. First time I've heard of the na...

Re: Wednesday, January 16, 2019 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

This is my first day watching J! with DirecTV instead of Spectrum. Nice to have closed captioning again. Another case of me not formatting data correctly, as I consider Hell's Kitchen a cooking show, not a reality show. This was an insanely tough board IMO. I had about 5-10 answers between both roun...

Re: Tuesday, January 15, 2019 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

Mark: It wasn't you, the music really did sound different during the end. Ran Movie and Its. All but figs in Common bonds. Didn't know there was more than one kind. $200 was my only miss in the Letter category. Wasn't sure if "satisfactory" would be B or C. Although my mom always went apoplectic at ...

Soledad is certainly a cognate for "solitude." (And Witwe for "widow.")
I couldn't make the leap because the translated title was unfamiliar to me. The rest seemed entirely cognate-free.

Re: Monday, January 14, 2019 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

Charlie seemed to bring his pornstache game. I approve. Couldn't do "soledad" to "solitude" in Translation for $200. That whole category seemed extremely tough, since you had to YEKIOYD instead of going for cognates, since there WERE no cognates. Ran "TY", though. I thank System of a Down for teachi...

Re: The Official TPH Education Thread (POTENTIAL GAME DAY SPOILERS)

CINNAMON IS A SPICE?!?! As opposed to a ...? I dunno, plant? Bark? Well, actually, cinnamon is taken from the bark of a tree. My point is, it's not stored in my brain as a "spice". And I find that far too often, "Not stored in my brain as X" is what trips me up on both HQ Words and J!

Re: The Official TPH Education Thread (POTENTIAL GAME DAY SPOILERS)

CINNAMON IS A SPICE?!?! As opposed to a ...? I dunno, plant? Bark? "Spice" to me conveys something of a more savory/spicy bent, like chilis, mustard seed, peppercorn, etc. I almost always encounter cinnamon in sweets such as cinnamon rolls. Just like I've never considered Doritos "tortilla chips" b...

Re: The Official TPH Education Thread (POTENTIAL GAME DAY SPOILERS)

Me: "Oh hey, HQ Words. I'll try that. It's just like the Toss-Up rounds on Wheel." I've only gotten to 10 words once. I once struck out on the FIRST WORD of a game because I had a brain fart on a six-letter toy beginning with S. Today I had another brain fart and couldn't think of a spice beginning ...

Re: Friday, January 11, 2019 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

This clue was one of two this week where semantics tripped me up. "Doctor" had me thinking physician, not psychiatrist, so my brain was turning up no results for a "famous doctor" in that time frame. After the music ended, the only WAG I had was Albert Schweitzer, but I knew the other details of the...

Re: Friday, January 11, 2019 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

I've heard of a "weakest link", but NHO the proverb they had surrounding that phrase, so it threw me for a loop and cost me the run. The Shark Tank category seemed incredibly YEKIOYD. This whole board seemed strangely cryptic, come to think of it. Also 0/5 in Earls. I thought that Dutch Schultz guy ...

Re: Thursday, January 10, 2019 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

Ran Radio and Words About Words. I thought Sardinia was tough for $200. Didn't recognize anything in the Corsica category. Amherst seemed tough for $400 too. NHO "runoff ballot" for 4/5 there. Heinz College was huge, HUGE negbait for Penn State. I usually do well in animal categories, but I somehow ...

Yes, once. It was a staff lunch (perhaps 10 or so years ago) at Benihana and my non-adventurous eating habits were well-known by my co-workers. I took a taste (a very tiny taste) off a spoon and made the appropriate face as even mustard or ketchup are more flavor than I care for on foods. Everyone ...

Re: Wednesday, January 9, 2019 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

Despite what you all may think, I was actually stunned that Kool-Aid was a TS. I caught the "Oh yeah" TOM right away and had zero doubt as to what it could be. Hannibal = elephants I learned from an early WWTBaM episode where someone missed equating Hannibal to elephants on the $100 question. That s...
