Re: Learned League 74 - Official Thread

Well, I confess that math and statistics are not my forte, so I am kind of carelessly playing with matches here. I supposed that someone would take me to task here, although I figured that it would be boson. This is the way I thought of it, flawed or not. I know (or, in this case, had a high probabi...

Re: Learned League 74 - Official Thread

I'll bet that everyone that got the McCovey question because of the Peanuts cartoon got the Charlie Brown Halloween question right last season. ;)

Re: Learned League 74 - Official Thread

I knew the Willie McCovey question only because of this old Peanuts' cartoon.

Re: Learned League 74 - Official Thread

... It was a head slap moment when I saw the reveal but paled in comparison to the howler of a miss I had on Q4: world leader, object of veneration today, died in the late '60s. Aha! Haile Selasse aka Ras Tafari, of course! Only on the reveal did I recall that story about Ho Chi Minh, who I mistake...

Re: Learned League 74 - Official Thread

8(5)-8(5) tie! I think you wished me just the right amount of luck. Good match! In hindsight, I can now hear Willie Nelson singing 'crazy', but at the time I didn't know it. Yes indeed, it was a good match! I apologize for not responding sooner. First off, I was out-of-town yesterday and this morni...

Re: Learned League 74 - Official Thread

Well now the plot REALLY thickens. In my '60s league rundle, Steve Bahnaman surprisingly forfeited again while I suffered my first loss of the season. That means that I am now tied with Boson for first place, three points ahead of anyone else. We play today. 8-) If Learned League had a cable channel...

Re: Learned League 74 - Official Thread

The plot thickens. I won on defense yesterday 6(3)-3(3) to remain the only unbeaten (but not untied) player in my rundle, in first place, at 6-0-1. I am two points ahead of Boson and Steve Bahnaman with four days left. However, I play Boson on Thursday and Steve on Friday. That will obviously be tou...

I understood the basic premise of the question, especially due to the inclusion of the Brown Derby, but couldn't come up with "camp."
I said "cool" although I knew that had to be wrong because that word was used in the late 1950s musical "West Side Story".

Re: Learned League 74 - Official Thread

Only 37% recognized Eichmann.... only 16% got Judy Garland? Her comeback concert at Carnegie Hall (and subsequent album) was a huge event at the time... and still considered one of the most remarkable events in show business history. I'm not even much of a Judy Garland fan, but that one came to me ...

Re: Learned League 74 - Official Thread

Well now I know that I am in really rarefied company with both you and Steve being in the rundle. Yep, my scheduling luck seems to be about to run out as I still have to play you and Steve.

Re: Learned League 74 - Official Thread

I am now leading my rundle in the 1960s ML as the only unbeaten (but tied) remaining at 5-0-1. I'm probably only leading because Steve Bahnaman forfeited a match last week (he's won all of the matches he's played). Of course, I might only be doing so well because of scheduling serendipity. Incredibl...

Re: Learned League 74 - Official Thread

Question 4 in the 1960s ML yesterday was: "Mother died yesterday, or maybe today," he once wrote. He never had the chance to write, "I died in 1960." Who was he? My response: Norman Bates Because "Psycho" came out in 1960 I really thought that I was correct. After I saw what was correct, I thought t...

Re: Learned League 74 - Official Thread

I'm an Updike fan, but "Couples" never even entered my mind. My initial thought was "Fear of Flying" but I thought that was written in the '70s, so I said "Valley of the Dolls" which it turns out is from the '60s. It was wrong but seemed like a pretty good guess. Count me for going with "Valley of ...

Then I get to face BahnamanS on Day 2 of the 1960s. At least I get that butt kicking over with early.
You are in my rundle there. I suspect that we are all playing for second.

Re: Learned League 74 - Official Thread

I can't believe that the Picasso question played so tough. My opponent missed it and had a better than .500 average in Art. I think Picasso's blue period is very well-known, his rose period less so. I'm above .600 in art and I missed that one too. I note that for the LL74 seaason, the art questions...

Re: Learned League 74 - Official Thread

Well, after all of that angst about falling below the promotion level, I actually won 7(4)-3(2) yesterday, ending LAWhitlock's 13 match winning streak. The win enabled me to tie LAWhitlock for the most points in the Laguna D rundle, although she held the tiebreaker. Still, it was cool to finish tied...
