Re: Thursday, May 29, 2014 Game Recap & Discussion [SPOILERS]

Kirk! don't feel bad, I considered myself somewhat clever and couldn't for the life of me see what the hell she was getting at. Sponge Bob. Got it. I know of the show's existence, but have never actually seen it. Wish I could say the same, Kirk -- it seems like it's been on a never-ending lo...

Re: Free Webinar on Thursday 5/29: The Jeopardy! Audition Process and How To Pre

Thank you for the seminar. As a veteran tryout participant, the only thing that I don't think was stressed enough is that you have to follow their instructions. They want you to buzz in a certain way, they want you to keep the game moving, they want you to speak up. That's a very good point. Do wha...

I've had bromeliads as houseplants before; it just took me a sec to remember where I'd heard the word before and picture the leaves.

Fun fact: if you cut off the top of a pineapple and replant it to grow a new bottom, when you harvest it, you'll find a small sponge and snail living inside it.

Re: J! in the Media

On Vulture.com today, there was an article about women on Jeopardy, featuring interviews with Julia, Keith (Vermonter) and myself. http://www.vulture.com/2014/05/women-ar ... -year.html

Re: Free Webinar on Thursday 5/29: The Jeopardy! Audition Process and How To Pre

Thanks to both of you, Randy and Dr. J., for putting on this webinar. I can't say that I learned a whole lot that I didn't already know about the process, but it did give me a few ideas for upping my game for the next time I audition (how's that for positive thinking?) And Dr. J: the lack of differ...

Re: Free Webinar on Thursday 5/29: The Jeopardy! Audition Process and How To Pre

Thanks for letting us know; the software we were looking at showed 3 callers, and we were pretty sure there were supposed to be more, so I'm glad folks heard it even if we weren't aware of you :)

Feel free to contact Randy or me if you have any questions, or ask right here in this thread!

Re: Haters gonna hate, I suppose, but...

Gnash, it's probably too late for you to go back and relive your life as a girl, so perhaps you could just take my word as someone who did that there are MANY ways that girls are discouraged from playing chess that boys are not. It is not, however, too late for you to take a statistics class. Seems ...

Re: Haters gonna hate, I suppose, but...

That's interesting, Rex; I didn't read it as him solely indicting nerd culture, just implicating it as part of the larger piece of our larger sexist culture. I hardly think that nerd culture is the worst, but it raised my awareness to think about how it has filtered down even there, where we smart g...

Re: Haters gonna hate, I suppose, but...

Please read the seminal text "Raising Ophelia" if you want some insight into why all sorts of achievement-related behaviors start to bottom out for girls once they hit puberty. (Spoiler alert: it has nothing to do with estrogen.) I can't even tell you how mad it makes me to have to push back agains...

I'm just going to leave this here. Checkmate. (Wait, is that right? I don't play chess because I couldn't find a Disney princesses set.)

Yep. Of course if a male professor asserts it, it does get taken more seriously. Wish I were joking.

Re: Haters gonna hate, I suppose, but...

Empirically, it is beyond any doubt: women do much, much worse than men in chess. It is not clear that there is any disparity before puberty, but once puberty hits, it's no different from most sports, even though muscular strength plays no role in chess. Nobody knows why this is, but it clearly isn...

Re: Haters gonna hate, I suppose, but...

Careful now... it seems like we might be rifting into an outchange. It's all funny now, but wait until you're at the TOC and an audience member runs up on stage, foaming at the mouth, screaming about how the male race is being decimated by you scheming, outchanging, rifttrending little girls. Does ...

Re: Haters gonna hate, I suppose, but...

I remember 20 years ago (crap...how did THAT happen? I'm old) when I was a student in university (my alma mater has a reputation of being a rather liberal place, somewhat like the Berkely of the prairies) I had a woman in one of my classes ask me if I was a feminist. I told her I wasn't sure, but "...

Anyway, my non-fiction work about my experience, "My Short, Happy Life in 'Jeopardy!'" is now available on...

Re: Tuesday, May 27, 2014 Game Recap & Discussion [SPOILERS]

I didn't take history in high school. History is far too interesting to learn in school. I can state with 100 per cent confidence that someone who relies on only the history (or science or math or English or whatever) spoonfed to them in school will not only do poorly on Jeopardy! , but won't even ...

only three types of people ever teach history: 1. The old geezer who's been teaching for 538 years, and just wants to retire; 2. The 'fanatic' for ONE era of history, who thinks all the other stuff is 'trivia' that takes away from discussing the hat sizes of every officer in both the Union and Conf...
