Re: Thursday, November 8, 2012 Game Recap & Discussion (SPOILERS)

I've lived in NJ, CT and Il, and as far as I know, all have a definition of "city" based on articles of incorporation. I live in a city in IL that is smaller in population than the "town" I lived in in CT. I guessed Plymouth for FJ and did try to figure out if it was a city or a town. Lots of easy c...

Re: Tuesday, November 6, 2012 Game Recap & Discussion (SPOILERS)

I don't speak Spanish and think there is something unfair about a FJ that is pretty much entirely reliant on knowing a foreign language with no secondary clues. And not even a famous phrase. However, I took a wild guess that the phrase had something to do with Immigration and came up with Homeland S...

Re: Monday, November 5, 2012 Game Recap & Discussion (SPOILERS)

FJ was an instaget for me based on the 1920's real events part of the clue. I totally missed the American qualifier, but it didn't make a difference. Seems like the momentum of the game swung when the Senate aide lucked out with the NY Senator category, otherwise I think the Montrealer might have won.

Re: Thursday, October 25, 2012 Game Recap & Discussion (SPOILERS)

I took Alex's warning as pointing one away from a European country being the largest. In any case FJ was an instaget for me.

Re: Wednesday, October 24, 2012 Game Recap & Discussion (SPOILERS)

A little unfair: Elements as a category with a chemist as a contestant. True, but about as unfair as a children's storyteller getting children's rhymes for FJ. Was also thinking radioactivity and planets and went with uranium. Did not consider plutonium since Pluto was not discovered until the 20th...

Re: Tuesday, October 23, 2012 Game Recap & Discussion (SPOILERS)

Proving a little knowledge is a dangerous thing, ... And this is why leading articles are so important. The expression is "little knowledge is a dangerous thing." :?: I feel as though I'm missing a joke here. The statement as Pope wrote it is "A little learning is a dangerous thing." I thought some...

Re: Tuesday, October 23, 2012 Game Recap & Discussion (SPOILERS)

I would've run the category except for that bizarre last clue. Show of hands: how many of you have even heard of an operetta called Darling Marietta? I listen to opera. I like opera. I also like Broadway musicals. I have never seen Darling Marietta so much as mentioned, never seen a recording of it...

Re: Tuesday, October 23, 2012 Game Recap & Discussion (SPOILERS)

Ironic to see only one missed question in the usually dreaded opera category.
I was totally lost on FJ, trying to think of a bald classic nursery rhyme character. Completely off base.

Re: Hulks not named Hogan

I ...remember a Spiderman cartoon series at the same time. So does Homer! ("Spider-pig, spider-pig, does whatever a spider-pig does...") For really, really old people, Hey, wait a minute!! The Hulk lyrics were something like: Doc Bruce Banner, blasted by gamma rays turned into the Hulk ain't he ung...

Re: Hulks not named Hogan

The Hulk has a TV show? Since when? Since 1978 (1978-82), with Bill Bixby as David Banner and Lou Ferrigno as the I.H. For really, really old people, there was also a Hulk cartoon series sometime in the mid-late 60's. I can distinctly remember the theme song, if not all the words. I also remember a...

Re: Monday, October 22, 2012 Game Recap & Discussion (SPOILERS)

The $2000 adjustment explained what seemed to be Alex's odd comment at the end of DJ that it was anyone's game, when I thought it was a lock at $8600 vs $4000.

Briefly considered William for FJ and then honed in on George 1 based on the dates.

Re: Thursday, October 18, 2012 Game Recap & Discussion (SPOILERS)

I thought it was pretty obvious in FJ that the name was going to have a communist connection. I thought a bit about a Russian or East German leader, and then remembered there had been a Karl Marx Stat in E Germany and went with it.

Re: Wednesday, October 17, 2012 Game Recap & Discussion (SPOILERS)

India came to mind immediately, and it was even Uttar Pradesh as the 2 word state that I thought of, but I agree it was a very weirdly worded question. I had the read it twice and still wasn't 100% sure they were looking for the country. I can easily see where in the pressure of a game situation a c...

Re: Friday, October 12, 2012 Game Recap & Discussion (SPOILERS)

Figured FJ was a director. I also guessed at John Huston because of the actors in the family, although I didn't think he was nominated so many times. Surprised Woody was nominated for acting.

Re: U Chicago Reactor and Other Comments [potential spoiler]

I had always heard it was under the football stadium (unused stadium, I guess, as U of C had banned football). No idea where that was relative to the Henry Moore statue.

Re: Thursday, October 11, 2012 Game Recap & Discussion (SPOILERS)

I'll ask the clue writers what exactly the point of this FJ was? I mean, if you happen to know the year Walden Pond was written you'll get it, but why bother throwing in a reference to a particular passage in the book that couldn't possibly have provided any meaningful information outside of the fa...

Re: Thursday, October 11, 2012 Game Recap & Discussion (SPOILERS)

Totally lost on FJ, could have given me a year and I wouldn't have come up with Walden Pond. Oddly, my guess was Loch Lomond, like Stephanie. I was angling for some Walter Scott connection.

Re: Wednesday, October 10, 2012 Game Recap & Discussion (SPOILERS)

The country-ia DD was tough if you aren't familiar with the area. Yeah, the only thing I could think of was Bosnia and Heregovina, though I knew it was wrong. Completely blanked. I had worked my way down to Bosnia and was going to stop there, until I remembered on a trip to northern Greece about 15...

Re: Tuesday, October 9, 2012 Game Recap & Discussion (SPOILERS)

There was a long article on the NY Times about two months about Apple store employees and their poor pay and other working condition issues relative to the profitability of the stores that made FJ an instaget for me. Good job by the champ on Peugeot, considering they haven't sold a car in the US in ...

Re: Monday, October 8, 2012 Game Recap & Discussion (SPOILERS)

Guess I was the only person who got Thin Red Line from the British historical reference (ironically from the Crimean War, same as the Charge of the Light Brigade) and then connected it to the movie and then back to the Jones book.
