Re: Football Category Poll (2/1/18 SPOILERS)

I'm just glad we can finally put that awful "defense wins championships" trope permanently to bed now. The adage that an NFL team can't win without a top-tier quarterback also took a beating. Hoss, Brad Johnson and Dilfer took care of that years ago. Tell that to the Lions' front office, which agre...

As well as the claims that officials rig every championship for the Patriots.
I think that fantasy was deflated a long time ago.

Re: Football Category Poll (2/1/18 SPOILERS)

The NFL changes so quickly. Remember the Wildcat? Introduced in 2008, everywhere by 2010, and now you almost never see it. Remrmber it? I just saw it. 8-) Yes... it's too bad they ran it wrong, because it was a lot of fun. But thankfully for Philly fans, the refs missed the illegal formation call a...

Re: Football Category Poll (2/1/18 SPOILERS)

(takes a breath) Yes I would really have liked to play this category. Since were geeking out, is the option play still more common in college games than pro? My thought is that pro quarterbacks are far too expensive these days to put them at risk on simple running plays. So those are college (and h...

Re: Thursday, February 1, 2018 Game Recap and Discussion [SPOILERS]

Almost sad to see the football category, because it was 5 rather simple LTs (being old, I remember the Vikings of the '70s) and that's got to stick in their minds if they ever want to run another one. Not getting the hate over amuse bouche - it's just french vocabulary. I saw jazz and went to Fitzge...

Re: Tuesday, January 30, 2018 Game Recap and Discussion [SPOILERS]

I decided to hope on the mythology part and it's been too long since I've read Joyce, so my guess was Holly Golightly. There are some basic mythological characters that come up again and again, though, so I don't feel great about missing this one. Ulysses might be the most analyzed novel ever writte...

Once you eliminate the impossible, whatever remains, however improbable, must be the answer. Nice one. Went to Holmes immediately, for many reasons. But for some reason I couldn't remember he had a brother, so I ran out of time. Watched it somewhere else (thanks, whoever does this). WDIV in Detroit...

Re: Tuesday, January 16, 2018 Game Recap and Discussion [SPOILERS]

I'm fine with ringworm, though I wouldn't have complained about a BMS there - especially since the couch potato part of the clue led to the specific answer as well. Once they negged it, though, it wouldn't have been fair not to reverse. Worked through FJ because I wanted to go to Godfather right awa...

Re: Monday, December 25, 2017 Game Recap and Discussion [SPOILERS]

Started with Alice, but something about the prose made me think it was older, so I traveled to Swift. Oops. Odd wagering. I always think I'd regret it most if I got FJ right and then didn't bet enough. But I'd probably regret what Donna did as well - overbetting what's minimally necessary to guarant...

Ooh, animated gif shaming... I feel privileged.

Yeah, so maybe you're right. I thought it was more along the lines of the Sgt. Pepper's miss in that people often abbreviate and you know what they're talking about. But music is among my worst categories, so I won't press it.

Another UR student here (I transferred to Michigan after switching majors to finish and do the grad school thing). Great campus. Poor Lisa Beth. I'd imagine she'll have nightmares about being admonished by Alex at every turn. The first was iffy - if it wasn't enough, that's a good place for BMS. But...

Having lived in a few different areas of the country, I'll chime in that unless there's an actual Nor'easter going on that day, the roads will be in decent shape. The Northeast understands the use of the snowplow in ways that the Midwest can only dream about.

Re: Thursday, December 14, 2017 Game Recap and Discussion [SPOILERS]

We're moving to the Akron area as soon as we can sell our house built at the height of the bubble and unwanted for two years now. We will probably have to live inside something with tires, if this market continues. So, insta-connect Akron with tires, a little hesitation because I didn't think they w...

Re: TPH on WoF 12/8/17 discussion [SPOILERS]

I have to ask a couple of questions. Do you get any practice spins with the wheel? Can you adjust the effort you put into the wheel to try to get or avoid any spots? They do let you practice spins, and in fact, you play an entire practice game. However, they stop the wheel manually when you do it, ...

OK. But when 100 million US households watch Fischer-Dieskau hum a little ditty on an annual basis, we can drill down to that level of detail. There's a balance here, and the only point I'm trying to make is that those six players are at a level of maybe knowing the presidents. If you don't know Ca...

I think they all qualify for osmosis unless the average non-fan just isn't aware of specific positions. So it would be like me complaining about Simpsons episodes questions or opera questions - I just don't care enough to gain a basic competency. For J! purposes, basic competency in opera is far ea...

I completed the partial run in the NFL category, but the names were a little tough if you aren't a fan. Yes, Moon is in the Hall of Fame, but he played part of his career in Canada and never made a Super Bowl. Palmer languished in Cincinnati most of his career and had only been to the playoffs thre...

Re: Sad Legal News About a Former Champion

That's true. College administrations are beyond bizarre. I hope it's just a misunderstanding. I rooted for her - being from the same area and my wife was an adjunct at a couple of universities down there around the same time she was on the show. I've even visited Tecumseh a few times, and it's not a...

Re: The Official TPH Education Thread (POTENTIAL GAME DAY SPOILERS)

So should I stop wasting mine too, since I'm clearly never gonna get this? I literally had to sit down and figure out 592+8 on paper. I'm wondering how paper helps. I'm imagining this big Where's Waldo diorama with a whole host of people holding up their hands. But because of yesterday's show, we k...
