No guess, Messi, Vatican City

Monday and Friday I had trouble coming up with anything. Both correct answers were "Oh, of course" moments (along with "1979, genius" Friday).

Never read/seen Catch-22.
I've only ever seen "fogey."

I also said Tchaikovsky just before the buzzer, but I'm n...

Re: Wednesday, January 8, 2020 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

If you get to one guy then it's strange not to be able to get the other name wanted. Of course, there's my problem of not being able to keep which was which straight. It took me two seconds to figure this was the annual Dreyfus Affair FJ, then twenty to decide on one of the two names. I got it righ...

Got equator, Car Talk, metronome, Holliday, fiasco, Teutonic Knights, and precinct for $8200, which combined with a FJ! solve gets a fourth podium win. (I personally also count raptor and operetta for $800 each and a total of $9800, enough to tie for the lead going into Final.) Clammed on oak and fe...

Got stuck on Casablanca (off by one year) and couldn't come up with anything. If I'd allowed myself long enough to think of it, I'd have gotten to Kane and "Rosebud" soon enough. The Graduate/"Plastics" was never going to click.

The ToC is prone to having a clue where I know what/who they're asking about but not the name, with "the guy who invented the barometer" joining "the woman who killed the guy in the bathtub" or "the giant statue of Jesus in Buenos Aires Rio De Janeiro." Thermopylae (I know better – it happened in 480 BC – but got hung up and decided to say something), no guess

Nothing about the Wednesday clue was familiar. I still couldn't muster a guess after a few minutes with Google and Wikipedia.
