Re: Thursday, June 11, 2020 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

Wow, too many TSs, but another good game for the champ. FJ had me searching. The best so could come up with was Rasputin, but he felt too new-ish. St Elmo was gettable if you recalled that St Elmo’s Fire is a nautical phenomenon.

Re: Wednesday, June 10, 2020 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

Good win by the champ. FJ was a matter of name a 19th C British naturalist. If it was the TOC, I’d have to choose between Darwin and Thomas Huxley. In this game, only one choice.

Re: Tuesday, June 9, 2020 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

I also facepalmed at the Carson TS. Kids these days.... For FJ, I precalled the post-Jackson one-and-dones but then faltered when given Concord. I vainly tried to think of one from MA and only too late thought to include NH. Bah!

Re: Reretaken Down

With this thread on page 2 I found a reason to bump it. For crossword puzzle solvers check out Rex Parker's comment after you finish the Saturday 6/6 puzzle: The biggest issue / downer for me, though, was 1A: Capital of Chad (N'DJAMENA). At 1-Across, that is such a f***-you kind of answer. People w...

Re: Reretaken Down

There was a very low tide today so I went to the beach to look for various low tide critics and who do I see but none other than the GOAT himself: Mr. Ken Jennings! I introduced myself and he was very cordial. I told him I won a game on J! and he said "together we've won 75." If I would have been a...

Missed tax and hot rollers. The other clues seemed fairly pedestrian.

Re: Friday, June 5, 2020 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

Nice performance by Ben tonight. He managed to outbuzz Meggie in a number of clues and that made the difference in the game. I precalled Gulliver and Robinson Crusoe but doubted that the latter would be a clue so close to using it in another FJ. Even so, FJ wasn’t quite an Instaget.

Re: Learned League 85 - Official Thread

A little bit of knowledge did me wrong on the tico/a question: had I nothing to go on but the names of Latin American countries, I probably would have picked the one that had the letters T, I, C, and A in it in that order; however, I know a good handful or two of Spanish demonyms, and the last two ...

Well, quoting another J! Clue, the boundary between East and West Germany was the Elbe river, so definitely a natural boundary subject to the limitations of fractal geometry.

Re: Tuesday, May 26, 2020 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

I didn't see the show, but 500 miles seems way shorter than the length of the Iron Curtain: Separating East and West Germany, Czeckslovakia and Hungary from Austria, and Yugoslavia from Austria and Italy is the dividing line from Soviet controlled to Western democracies in the mid 20th century. Tha...

Re: Learned League 85 - Official Thread

I never thought of Quasimodo; I didn't know what kyphosis or the Sunday after Easter was, so all I had to go on was "literary character with a malady and a Latinate name." If I'd thought of Quasimodo I probably would have picked him, but in the end I submitted Albus Dumbledore, thinking maybe a phr...

Re: Thursday, May 21, 2020 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

It was generally a well-played game despite some surprising TSs. Pyramus a TS when spotted Thisbe? Cmon, folks! As for FJ: Instaget followed by dithering about whether top was needed. 12 ft boy: nothing in the question required it to be an elemental metal. Brass, bronze and pewter* are considered me...

Re: Tuesday, May 19, 2020 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

It was good to get back to a new game, though I did enjoy seeing the first-ever Zerg-cam shot  Lots is Lach trash, especially in Songbook and Bible, neither noted strong points of mine. Instaget FJ — inn pretty sure that the SFR-Crusoe connection was used in a LL question a few seasons ago,...

Re: Learned League 84

Theatre MD6 Q6 While tragedies were not uncommon during the Restoration period of English theater (1660-1700 AD), the period is best known for what witty three-word theater style that satirized the affectations of people and often their entire social classes? I struggled with this one. I get what t...

Re: Tuesday, April 28, 2020 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

Silly me. When I can confidently answer a movie FJ, I assume that at least 2 of the contestants will get it. Color me surprised at the outcome. It looked to me like Sarah was getting outbuzzed pretty consistently this game, but stayed in it courtesy of her deeper knowledge base and better discipline...

Re: Learned League 84

Given that I had a crush on Stevie Nicks growing up, I truly appreciated the first two questions yesterday although by then I had clinched my rundle anyway. My best gets of the week were probably Fanny and "Magnet and Steel". I was surprised so few people got "Magnet and Steel," but I suppose it is...

Re: Non-Jeopardy! related poll

“You have another think coming” has been in use for more than 150 years, and the use of “think” as a noun has been around for longer. Here’s a discussion: https://www.merriam-webster.com/words-at-play/usage-another-think-coming-or-another-thing-coming That argument didn't help during the Great Lite...
