Too many old-timey clues this season
Hadn't really noticed, but if so that would explain my QPct being well above my long-term average.

Re: Thursday, December 5, 2019 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

Would "Hemsworth" be a "which one?" for "Thor/Huntsman" - like the "Kennedy rule" for US Presidents? I can never get the two straight. (Chris and Liam, not Teddy and John.) I'm pretty sure you would've been BMS'd on that. BTW, per a LL question a few years ago: there are three Hemsworth brothers (C...

Re: LL83: Learned League

Wahaddi just wasn't close enough. Nor was dropout. Yup, I thought I had a chance with The Dropout (almost took a flier with The Graduate, which would have been a hoot) but no love without the modifier. Graduation was Kanye's third album. His second: Late Registration . I kicked myself for adding an...

Yes, Jennifer played really well, and I got to talk with her during lunch and she is really sweet person and extremely well versed in the arts, and she had a brother that's a big opera fan, so it was a tailor made final for her. Just wanted to put out there my game is on Friday so if you guys do ha...

Re: LL83: Learned League

Aqua Regia will be one exception, although as a solution, it might already be under different rules. I'm too far removed from schooling to know if the nomenclature requires the -ic ending. Offhand, I can't think of any -ous endings. It is used to distinguish between valence states of metal oxides s...

Re: LL83: Learned League

Good to see that cmp146 got the prussic acid question correct (and got 2 points for it!). Shoutout to Professor Pruss who is now leading A Magnolia! If her opponents keep defending her like that (zero for Soul Train?) she will keep winning. I don't get it, what's wrong with zero for Soul Train? It ...

How did 68% get that Gillian Flynn question??? I believe that I posted that factoid in one of my annual pre-test study guides here. She comes up all the time on Jeopardy! and even appeared on one of the online tests a few years ago For the music question, I got as far as Brian Eno and "Tal"king Hea...

Re: Monday, December 2, 2019 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

Rough game with a wild ending. I bet a huge range of responses in FJ would have been acceptable, as long as you led with "Luther's." Yeah, I can't help wondering what the ruling would have been if Mohammed had completed the word complaints. It seems pretty clear to me that he knew what they were lo...

Re: Monday, November 25, 2019 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

Not seeing how "jeans" would lead a contestant to Uber. Tech companies have a reputation for being aggressively casual. You either play it as a “no tricks” FJ! clue, or search for a hidden meaning. Although I’d think a reply of GOOG or FB would be more aligned with casual attire - but those are obv...

Re: Thursday, November 21, 2019 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

The combination of bread and melted cheese is one of life’s great treats and takes many forms (fondue, crostini, gougeres, etc). But good cheese is an essential. Many years ago, a co-worker was banned from the communal microwave in the lunch room after repeatedly nuking a particularly smelly Gruyere...

Re: Besides Ken, Brad, and James, what other contestants could be considered GOAT?

The contestants from the 2014, 2015, 2017, and 2019 ToCs never got to compete against Ken, Brad, or James in super tournaments where the play was all individual, so I do think that it's a little unfair for them not to be considered for a GOAT tournament. Alex Jacob, Arthur Chu, and maybe Ben Ingram...

Re: LL83: Learned League

Yesterday was a classic application of what my pub trivia partners have dubbed the “Abner Doubleday” rule (so-named because of a painful miss in a pub trivia round years ago). The rule is that, when you don’t know the answer but do know one pertinent fact about the question put that pertinent fact d...

Re: Besides Ken, Brad, and James, what other contestants could be considered GOAT?

In baseball it could end up being Ruth, Trout, and Bonds as the undisputed top 3 position players of all time...if you can overlook the chemical help that Bonds had. Anyone who omits Mays from that conversation needs to go back and look at his stats. Don’t forget Ted Williams! Ted Williams I would ...
