Re: Learned League 85 - Official Thread

I had just the opposite impression. I expected it to focus on minutiae that only a fanatic would recall, but I got 5/6 from just watching most of the movies (admittedly, Captain Marvel was a lucky pull but it made sense once I saw it). The Stan Lee cameo question was more in line with what I was ex...

Re: Learned League 85 - Official Thread

Giving the MCU ML a whirl. How do you remember Stan Lee's barber cameo...but not the -Tesseract-?! It's a small comfort that my scoring actually did match up, more or less, with the overall correct % per clue at least. More comforting was beering it. I thought about entering this one, but aft...

Congrats to ElendilPickle on her top 20 finish. Had I more confidence in my WAG of Honolulu and moneyed it, I coulda been a contendah.

Those of you are FB friends of mine may already have seen my post of this article, but for those who haven’t: Here is one of the clearest and most informative, evidence-based summations of how COVID-19 spreads and how to prevent its spread. link

Re: A Math Question

The percentage of outcomes in which you get no rooster, assuming as you do that the ratio is effectively invariant, is (4/5)^4= 41%. The percentage of one-rooster outcomes is (4/5)^3*1/5*4= 41% also. The remaining 18% of outcomes are divided up into 2, 3 and 4 rooster scenarios. Would the same logi...

Re: Learned League 85 - Official Thread

are the results of the voting up yet? Speaking of up -- look up. ;) https://learnedleague.com/hist/awards/85.php Here are the top 5 BWAs. The winner would've been much better, in my eyes, had it been only a single word (since that's what the question asked for). Thought the one that got 2nd was rea...

Very close to mine, Andy. 25-22-25-18. Perhaps interestingly, my records for those four periods were 2-3,3-1-1, 3-1-1 and 1-3-1, respectively.

Re: Learned League 85 - Official Thread

Yeah, regression to the mean here. 3 straight days of tough questions and lousy defense translate to 3 straight losses. Went for the RAND and Parasite negbait yesterday to continue my streak of mediocrity.

I badly misjudged the difficulty of 2 and -2 and failed to money either. Had I done so, I would have been 98th %ile. WTG, Kirk!

Oh, Alex...I have a feeling Oprah has praised other women authors in the 6 years since Maya Angelou passed - maybe even other ladies who've died besides Toni Morrison... Oprah has championed many writers in her career, but I think the stronger link that we were supposed to remember, and to w...

Re: Learned League 85 - Official Thread

It was pointed out that yesterday was one of the four toughest days in the history of LL, and it felt it. It is the rare and unsettling experience to read through the six questions and realize that I don’t know the answers to any. With some thought, I came up with reasonable guesses for the SEC team...

Overall, a fairly well-played game. I thought this might it for Zach, especially after seeing the FJ clue, but he pulled out another win.

I got it because one of the members of Trout Fishing in America used to be in another band called St. Elmo's Fire and that name always stuck with me.
And Trout Fishing in America references a book by Richard Brautigan while I got St Elmo’s Fire from the Brian Eno song of the same name.

$7000 + St Elmo

Not a great showing for me from the fourth podium. I missed all the $2000 clues and then also whiffed on FJ.

Re: Thursday, June 11, 2020 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

Wow, too many TSs, but another good game for the champ. FJ had me searching. The best so could come up with was Rasputin, but he felt too new-ish. St Elmo was gettable if you recalled that St Elmo’s Fire is a nautical phenomenon.

Good win by the champ. FJ was a matter of name a 19th C British naturalist. If it was the TOC, I’d have to choose between Darwin and Thomas Huxley. In this game, only one choice.
