Re: 2020 Online Test announced - Jan 28, 29, 30

I can't say for sure, but it is interesting that they're doing Providence and not Boston. Granted, the cities are only an hour from each other, but I'd imagine just in terms of raw population, Boston (and the immediate outlying metro cities and towns) would have a bigger contestant pool, but maybe ...

Re: Thursday, December 12, 2019 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

I know the general rule is that the leading article doesn't matter unless it matters (e.g. "Invisible Man" vs. "The Invisible Man"), but it grated on me that Kim's response of "The Quiet Place" was accepted for the film title "A Quiet Place."

...and Booknotes (I see a show called "Book TV" on C-SPAN in the TV listings when flipping around every now and again, but it's a different show, I guess).
"Book TV" is the entire weekend block of book-related programming that airs on C-SPAN 2, which grew out of "Booknotes."

Re: THE "J" EFFECT $1000 clue 12/5/19 [SPOILERS]

A couple other food things that I encountered were when I asked a waitress for a sundae, she told me that the freezer was acting up, but she could still make a "frappe" which I declined... Watching the recent TV series "NOS4A2," which takes place in Massachusetts, I heard the term "frappes" more th...

I knew Jackie Robinson was 42 because I'm an Angeleno who's not completely blind to sports... Incidentally, 42 is not a number that Jackie Robinson wore while at UCLA... https://i.imgur.com/O760ZcH.jpg https://i.imgur.com/7PQAMab.jpg ...but 42 is now the number most associated with him (by far), so...

I'm also really slow catching up. KABC broadcast all of the week's episodes a day late - not that it matters much to me since I record them. But they also skipped a day in the week prior, so I put off some watching hoping it would be shown on a Saturday, where they usually air an older episode. Per...

Star Trek writer/editor D.C. Fontana dies at 80.
I wouldn't be surprised if a J! clue gives "D.C." and asks for her full first name (Dorothy -- D.C. stands for "Dorothy Catherine").

I suppose they could use some kind of transportation technology to make it smoother, but there's always the risk of it coming across as a bit creepy - e.g., contestants entering on conveyor belts. Oooohh! How about one of those giant claws depositing each contestant behind their podium? We just hav...

...but couldn't think what kind of crap must have been in theaters in 1967. No social activism, pre-hippie awareness, the studio system was still hanging on, no sci-fi and fantasy to speak of (except for Bond, James Bond - that should be one of the quotes). For the record, there was a fantasy among...

I knew "compounding pharmacy" from a recent episode of John Oliver's Last Week Tonight, can't say that I'd ever heard of the term before, or even known the concept existed. Might be a good poll question. A good number of the non-chain pharmacies around L.A. have signs on their buildings proclaiming...

Elise's chat indicated she would be ready for an extended run wardrobe-wise as she collects vintage dresses from the '60s & '70s. You can pack a lot of those kicky print dresses into an average carry-on bag. I'd love to see the rest of the collection, so go, Elise! If she does go on a long run... t...

After the first three match days of the season, I was 3-0-0 and spent last weekend in 1st place in A Lyceum.

Then, on the next five match days, I went 0-4-1, and am spending this weekend in 19th place in A Lyceum. I feel like I've fallen off a cliff.

Jim Morrison is the only person who has ever referred to Los Angeles as "City of Light." Him doing so during peak smog years was especially odd.

There was a promo for Kangaroo where someone sang “Good morning, Captain”. Not just a promo, that was how the show started in the mid-to-late-'70s -- a montage of a few people (including some CBS personalities) saying "Good morning, Captain," Captain Kangaroo saying "good morning," and then into th...

I remember Romper Room being on WOR channel 9. Don't know if it was syndicated or just on the superstation. "Romper Room" was syndicated, although it was syndicated as a concept rather than as complete programs. Thus, each version was produced locally, with a different host. I definitely remember t...

I will be checking the box in the weekly poll stating that I teared up at Dhruv's FJ response. Before the Pacific time zone airings, it was pretty well spoiled on social media that there was an FJ! response that made Alex choke up, so I think I was too "prepared" for it to have a full impact on me.

At old ball stadiums, an organ, more likely, but I think most of the newer ball stadiums got rid of their organ systems and now it's just somebody pressing a sample button. About half the MLB stadiums have live organists at this point -- it's not really new versus old, it's just a matter of which t...
